The Homer High Panthers began their 1962 football season with wins over the newcomer Bismarck and defending East Central Champion, Catlin. The Panthers then lost a tough game to Rossville. The HHS Homecoming was brightened by a 6-0 win over the large ABL eleven. The encounter with Ridge Farm, the eventual East Central Champion, proved to be a defensive battle with the Bulldogs winning by one touchdown. The Milford trip turned into a mere battle with the Panthers losing by one touchdown. A freescoring dual with Jamacia ended with the Panthers putting over the winning touchdown in the last minute. The battle for second place with St. Joseph was a hard fought battle with the Indians putting over the decisive touchdown. In the final game of the season, the Panthers battled Oakland to a 6-6 tie to end the season with a overall 4-4-1 record and a conference record of 4-2 to place third. Homer was never out of a game all season, consequently, in the East Central All Star selec- trons several boys were honored. Tom Kern, Forrest Chism, Norman Reynolds, Jerry Robbins, C.R. Lawrence, and Bob Kiest were given honorable mention. Ron Krukewitt re- ceived a second team end nod while Larry Baird and Don Frye made the first team All East- Central Conference at tackle and end. Krukewitt, T. Kern, R. Walton, Mgr. On November 4. 1962, the Homer Panthers began their 1962-63 basketball season. There were fourteen boys out for varsity practice. The returning lettermen were: Seniors; D. Frye, R. Frye, and L. Baird. Juniors; R. Krukewitt, K. Felgenhour, T. Lawrence, N. Reynolds, and J. Robbins. Other basketball boys who were not lettermen but who were important to the team were C.R. Lawrence, a Junior center, and D. Reynolds, a Sophomore guard. Although the Homer Panthers have had better seasons, they ended with a record of five wins and sixteen losses. Senior, D. Frye, made second team All Conference forward. Don was also free-throw champion for the season and was leading scorer and rebounder. Junior, R. Krukewitt, made Honorable Mention. All of Homer and Homer High School wishes their team better luck next year. FRONT ROW : M. Koerner, D. Krukewitt, M. Wakefield, T. Wolf, G. Sharp, G. James, T. Brewer, D. Ron Krukewitt, Jerry Robbins, Norman Reynolds, and Kenny Felgenhour; Juniors. The Frosh-Soph join- ed the Varsity on March 18, with Dick Reynolds, Terry Wolf, Dave Krukewitt, Mike Wakefield, Raymond Gordon, Gerald Sharp, Jeff Bryan, and Rod Kibler. The season did not start out as all had wanted, but Homer still went to the Paris Relays strong and hoping to come home with a few trophies. Homer came home'from the Relays with a very good rating of 3rd place, coming within one point of 2nd place. Homer entered in only three events, the Varsity 880 yd. relay: 2nd; the Varsity sprint medley: 2nd; and the Fresh-Soph sprint medley: 2nd. We congratulate those boys who ran in those three races and won Homer a third place rating. The Homer Panthers were beginning to turn the season into a very good season. The Panthers had no big meets until Thursday, April 25, at the East Central Con- ference, where Homer hoped to take the championship from Ogden. The Homer Panthers are the E. C. C. Champions for 1963. The fighting champs beat Ogden by 3 1 2 points to claim the title. Homer did not have many first places but had depth. Don Frye won the only first place ribbon in the 440 with a time of 54.4. The Varsity mile relay team consisting of Jerry Robbins, Ron Krukewitt, Terry Wolf, and Don Frye also took a first place. Congratulations to those who help claim the Championship title for Homer High. The Saturday after the East Central Conference. Homer traveled to the Jamaica Relays. Homer came in second with Ogden only one point ahead. Ogden claimed the title from Homer again for the second year. Ogden won with 49 points and Homer had 48. Homer set two re- cords, one in the 88- yd. relay, a tie with Uni High, with a time of 1:39.3 seconds. The team was Larry Baird, Jerry Robbins, Norman Reynolds, and Don Frye. The other record was the mile relay, with a time of 3:42,2. This team consisted of Ron Krukewitt, Jerry Robbins, Terry Wolf, and Don Frye. But with these tw i races Homer stayed in running positions because of depth. Thursday, May 2, Homer traveled to the Champaign County to try to win the title there. Homer did not have all the running power they needed, but still placed fourth. Our only individual winner was Don Frye in the 440. The mile relay, a first place, won with Jerry Robbins, Ron Krukewitt, Terry Wolf, and Don Frye. Larry Baird placed 2nd in the 220 and 3rd in the 100. Jerry Robbins won a 2nd in the 880. Norm Reynolds won a 3rd in the pole vault. Our next meet was the District Track Meet, Friday, May 10, in Urbana. Homer had only two boys that placed in the District. Larry Baird won a 4th in the 220 yd. dash and Don Frye, a 5th in the 440 yd. dash. Homer had only one sophomore that placed at the Rantoul Fresh-Soph Track Meet. Terry Wolf placed 2nd in the broad jump and 4th in the 440 yd. dash. Friday, October 5, 1962 was like any other early fall day. The sky was blue, with a puffy white cloud etched here and there, Mr. Sunshine was glowing radiantly, and a little breeze would come gently whispering through the trees. But it was not exactly an ordinary day. It was the day of the 1962 Homecoming. Thegay festivities began around 2:45 that afternoon, when the cheerleaders of the '62 football season gave a short program displaying their talents and reviving school spirit for the big game with ABL High School in the evening. The cheerleaders then presented a cake to the football boys to encourage their victory for the ’’most important game” of the season. Then, it was off for the parade! At 3:00 p.m., the floats, the candidates for the Homecoming King and Queen titles were lined up and paraded through town. A big day it was at school. Tension was high, and as the game plus the big dance were approaching quickly, everyone was curious to know who would be the victor, who would be the King and Queen, and mainly, the curiousity of all the students on what the Senior’s Homecoming theme was going to be. After our victory over ABL, at 10:00 p.m. the 1962 Homecoming dance got into full swing to the setting theme, ’’Blue Hawaii”. Time passed quickly, and at 11:00 p.m. the drums rolled announcing that the King and Queen were about to be announced. History In the year of 1959-1960, the Freshmen, wide-eyed and excited at being in high school, had a total of twenty-nine students. Since then, we as a class, have been declining in number, and now', in the year of 1963, we will only have a total of twenty graduates from Homer High School. In that first year, our roll-call consisted of: Barbara Allen, Larry Baird, Kay Bennington, Forrest Chism, Sherrilyn Clark, Betty Donley, Carol Erickson, Donald Frye, Ronald Frye, James Criswell, George Henderson, John Henderson, AnnaMae Kenney, Tom Kern, Steve King, Barbara Lacey, Janet Lewis, Hank Lower, Gary Maxwell, EarlPlotner, Paul Ridinger, Karen Satterfield, Cheryl Shoaf, Raymond Stanley, Sara SueSy, DonaUnwiller, Robei't Walton, Dixie Wilson, and Roberta Wolf to round out our twenty-nine gals and guys. Our class officers w'ere: Janet Lewis, President; Steve King, Vice-President; Dixie Wilson, Secretary; Karen Satterfield, Treasurer; Tom Kern, Sergeant-at-Arms; and Mr. Durbin as our class sponsor. At the beginning of our Sophomore year, we had lost only five classmates; James Griswell, Hank Lower, Gary Maxwell, Steve King, and Raymond Stanley. But we picked up two new faces to add to our collection. They were Irene King and James Poole. The officers which ruled the class in the school year 1960-1961 were: Earl Plotner, President, Forrest Chism, Vice-President; Sherrilyn Clark, Secretary, Cheryl Shoaf. Treasurer; Roberta Wolf, Sergeant-at-Arms; and Mr. Durbin as our class sponsor. Beginning our Junior year, we lost Roberta Wolf, Janet Lew'is, and Betty Donley, and we gained Elizabeth Peverly. The officers that year were: Dixie Wilson, President; Sherrilyn Clark, Vice-President; Barbara Allen, Secretary; Cheryl Shoaf, Treasurer; and Mr. Hudson as sponsor. Thus, in our graduating class of 1963, we have a total of twenty; we lost Irene King, Paul Ridinger, and Elizabeth Peverly, leaving our graduates to be: Barbara Allen, Larry Baird, Forrest Chism as President, Kay Bennington, Sherrilyn Clark as Secretary, Carol Erickson, Don Frye, Ron Frye, George Henderson, John Henderson, Tom Kern, Barbara Lacey, Earl Plotner, Jim Poole, Karen Satterfield, Cheryl Shoaf as Treasurer, Sara Sue Sy as Vice-President, Dona Unwiller, Bob Walton, and Dixie Wilson, Mr. Hudson is our sponsor. We, as awhole, are a fun-loving group, and this class of 1963, leaves Homer High School, with many fond memories, and a good future in sight.
