Jones All twenty-three of the 1961 Panther Football Squad members travelled to Champaign where the hungry Panthers began this seasons hunt. Champaign's Sophomores proved a worthy adversary but were outscored 8 to 0. The Catlin Wolverines ( the eventual 1961 East Central Conference Champions) proved that the smarter, hungrier animal has the best chance for survival as they devoured the Panthers 25 to 6. The Catlin game also lost 1961 All-Conference Fullback Dick Felgenhour. The Bismarck Blue Devils were left blue as the injured and depleted Panthers defeated them 7 to 0. The Golden Panthers suffered their second setback at the hands of the Rossvilie Bobcats 12 to 6. A scoreless tie with ABLpreceded the 34 to 12 beating administered by the Ridgefarm Bulldogs. Milford was blanked 19 to 0, as Bill Block scored three times for the clawing Panthers. Jamaica Cardinals avoided the Panthers strong paws until the final two minutes, when the Panthers dealt them a severe 7 to 0 home run swipe, winning our Homecoming Game. The third straight victory and the fifth of the season was registered against the St. Joseph Indians as the Panthers lifted their scalps 13 to 6. Thus ending a season with a record of 5 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. Homer led the area in shutouts, having 5 to their credit. VARSITY TEAM Second Row: Asst. Coach V. Hudson B. Block L Baird D. Frye F. Kuhnen The 1961-62 basketball season started for the fighting Panthers on November 6, 1961. There was a total of 28 boys out to make the first string varsity. The returning lettermen the new coach, Lynn Viseur, had to build his team with were: Frank Dutton, Dick Felgenhour, Bill Block, and Gene Jones. Rangy junior Don Frye was selected as a team member on the 2nd All-Conference Team. Don also was Homer's leading scorer and rebounder. Sophomore Ron Krukewitt was second in both of those categories. Senior Gene Jones was the free throw champion for the season with a 681% accuracy at the charity line. Although the season was not the best the Panthers have had, they did manage to win four games while losing seventeen. Everyone here at Homer High wishes the team a successful season next year. JR. Indians, the ABL Trojans, the Jamaica Cardinals, and the Ridgefarm Bulldogs. They also lost two meets to three tough contenders: the Schlarman Hilltoppers, the Ogden Bulldogs, and the University High Buckeyes. We placed fourth at the Paris Relays, second at the Jamaica Relays, third at the Potamac Relays, second at the East Central Conference meet and fifth in the Champaign County Meet. Three new records were set this year. Dick Felgenhour threw the discus 140!1M in the East Central Conference meet for a new record. Dick also put the shot 50 4” in the Champaign County meet which was a school and county record. Our mile relay team clipped off a 3:38.9 at the District to break the old Homer School record. The Speedsters that ran on that team were: Jerry Robbins, Ron Krukewitt, Gene Jones; and Don Frye. They started out by electing class officers: Bill Block, President; Jayne Krugh, Vice President; Judy Nale, Secretary; and Jerry Messman, Treasurer. Patsy Taylor and Dick Felgenhour were elected as Student Council representatives. Mrs. Mary Hamilton was elected as their class Sponsor. Twenty-five ex-greenles plunged ahead to become silly-Sophs” in 1959. Harold Hough was elected President; Jayne Krugh, Vice-President; Kay Chism, Secretary; and Dick Felgenhour Treasurer. Kay Chism and Jerry Messman were elected to serve as Student Council Representatives. Mrs. Hamilton was again the class sponsor. By 1960, the jolly-junior had decreased to twenty. New officers were elected as follows; Meredith Bertram, President; Gene Jones, Vice-President; Janet Taylor, Secretary; and Harold Hough, Treasurer. Jayne Krugh and Bill Block were elected as Student Council representatives v ith Jerry Messman having been elected as Vice-President the preceeding year. Coach Mel Root was elected as the new class sponsor as Mrs. Hamilton had moved. In 1961, twenty-two returned to become”sophisticated seniors.” Gene Jones was elected President; Bill Block, Vice-President; Jayne Krugh, Secretary; and Harold Hough Treasurer. Patsy Taylor, Judy Houston, and Harold Hough were elected as Student Council representatives, with Jerry Messman having been elected the preceeding year. Mr. and Mrs. Root served as class sponsors. In the Spring of 1962, thedaycame when it was time for them to march down the aisle in their caps and gowns to receive their diplomas. Shortly after that big event, they left for their senior trip to the Ozarks. After returning, they were no longer a class, but each and individual stepping into life as an older, wiser, and more mature young adult. S., We the editors of the 1964 Homerian would like to thankyou, the students, parents, and teachers for all the co-operation given us this year. We have thoroughly enjoyed producing the Homerian for you; we have learned much this year and have many fond memories to take with us. The best of luck goes out to eaph of you in your remaining years of high school, and we hope they will be as prosperous for you as they have been for us. Especially, we would like to thank the staff and our sponsor, Mel Root, for all the work you have done to help with this book. Without your patience and co-operation we would not have been able to make the deadline and still be satisfied with the results. The Homerian is now yours for your enjoyment; we hope you like it. The Editors; Rose and Bev,
