OF HS5 Volume 37 Published by SENIOR CLASS 19 55 Dedication To Coach JohnT. Those chosen were Mary Lee Messman, Vice President; Carol Miller Secretary; and Nancy Wickiser Treasurer. Leroy Gurnea, the president, had been chosen the spring before. On Nov. 6 Homer Student Council sent a delegation, consisting of Leroy Gurnea, Mary Lee Messman, Nancy Wickiser, Janet Strohl and Mike Stayton, to Decatur for the District Student Council Convention. An interesting and enjoyable time was had by all. On Nov. 10 the Student Council played host to Ogden Student Council for half a day and on Jan. 26 returned the visit. These exchange visits were a continuation of the programs of both schools for better understanding co-operation between neighboring schools. At the District Basketball Tournament the Student Council sold Centennial Derbies in the various school colors. This project proved most successful, the Council made a nice profit and the Derbies added tremendously to the spirit and color of this exciting tournament. The most important project of the year was the introduction of dancing lessons for all inter- ested students. This project had been considered for several years but it was not considered practical until this year when Warren Clark of the Acadamy of Dance in Danville was con- tracted to give twelve lessons in ballroom dancing. These lessons proved not only to be greatly beneficial but also quite entertaining. 5 Dr. Roy King John Morrison Secretary Lee Summers Board of Irvin Wakefield Martin Wienke President James Allison Education Lawrence Rowand 6 J. Brown. Among these were returning lettermen Don Taylor, Charles Buck, Leroy Gurnea, Bob, Louie and Don Danner. The boys worked hard and looked forward to their first game with St. Joe here on Sept. 17. The starting lineup for Homer was: Don Taylor and Dennis Warkne at ends, Clyde Smith, at center; Louie and Bob Danner and Charles Buck in the backfield. The final score in spite of Louie Danner's 2 touchdowns, Charles Buck's 1 touchdown and Bob Danner's 2 points after touchdowns was Homer 20, St. Joe 22. On Sept. 24, the Panthers were host again, this time to Fisher. The Panthers fought valiantly but lost 26 to 6. Bob Danner scored the lone touchdown for Homer. On Saturday afternoon, Oct. 2, Homer went to Sidell and came back with their first victory, Homer 31, Sidell 27. Bob Danner was high point maker with 3 touchdowns. Charles Buck and Louie Danner each scored one touchdown. Don Taylor scored 1 point after touchdown. On Oct. 8, Homer trave eJ to Mahomet and again came home victorious, Homer 31, Mahomet 20. Bob Danner and Charles Buck made 2 touchdowns and Louie Danner made one. Clyde Smith made an extra point after touchdown. The boys then started practicing for a 11 man exhibition game. They went to Catlin one night for a practice scrimmage. They all seemed to like it very much. On Oct. 29, they had their first and last 11 man game of the season. They traveled to St. Joe for this encounter where Homer came out on top 16 to 7. Bob Danner and Frank Griffen each scored one touchdown. Bob Danner also kicked a field goal. The line up for Homers eleven man game was; Don Taylor-left end, Earl Donley-left tackle, Leroy Gurnea-left guard, Tom Mast-center, Ted Dutton-right guard, Clyde Smith-right tackle, Bob Allen- right end, Dick Dutton-quarter back, Louie Danner-left halfback, Charles Buck-fullback, Bob Danner- right halfback. We feel that the five members that were named on the Illini Valley All Star Team should have special mention. They are Don Taylor-end; Louie and Bob Danner-halfbacks, Don Danner-honor able men- tion end, and Charles Buck-honorable mention-halfback. 31 32 m 33 Varsity Back Row: Larry Michell, Gary Pridemore, Ted Dutton, Donald Verne Robertson, Tommy Mast, Donnie Forsythe, Danny Robinson. Center Row: Tommy Kibler, Manager, Dan McKenzie, Leroy Gurnea, Jim Lynch, Don Danner, Charles Buck, Earl Donley, Coach Brown. Front Row: Byron Dodd, Dennis Warnke, Don Taylor, Dob Danner, Lewis Danner, Dick Dutton. On November 1, thirty boys reported to Coach J. T. Brown to try their luck with the round ball. Among the thirty were the following returning lettermen: Byron Dodd, Dick Dutton, Don Danner, Bob Danner and Don Taylor. Dennis Warnke, a sophomore from Peoria Central also joined the squad. The boys started their three weeks of intensive practice to get in shape for their first game of November 19. It was a thriller! The score stood at 42-42 at the end of the fourth quarter, but after a hectic over-time, Homer was victorious with the score standing at 45-43. Our second game was no less thrilling with another overtime, but the strain was so great that Ridgefarm ran away in the overtime with a 54-39 decision. On December 3, Homer played its first game in our beautiful new gymnasium. This was our Homecoming game so the boys were in fine spirits as the score testifies: Homer 51—Uni High 47. Immediately after Christmas, Homer jumped into the Sidell Tournament, where we trounced Fairmount 91-53 only to be beaten almost as badly by a red-hot, hard running Potomic team by almost the same score 91-69. 34 J. V- Back Row- Donnie Anderson, Dick Canaday, Art Porter Second Row- Coach Brown, Bob Miller, Larry Anderson, Jimmy Wakefield, Bill Stauter, Tom Kibler, Mgr. Kneeling- Chuck Krukewitt, Jack Ellis, Charles Gurnea, Ronnie Allen, Don Talbert, Mike Stay ton On February 22, Homer held the District Tournament in the new elementary gymnasium. This was the first time the District Toui'nament had been held at Homer in many years. Eight teams squared off in what was tobeaclose well-matched tournament. Homer used its usual ball-control and by stalling out the last min- utes of all three games, managed to beat Scotland, 56-60, Ogden 46-37, and Ridgefarm 53-48. Many people considered the championship game with Ridgefarm the best game of the season for Homer. Winning the District entitled Homer to go to the Westville Regional where we met a strong Danville Team. Because of the unavoidable abscence of Dennis Warnke and Don Danner, as well as the fact that many of the team were recovering from a virus, Danville was able to roll up a crushing victory—87-55. This was the last game of the season for Homer. TRACK 1954 With returning lettermen Lewis Danner, Don Danner, Dean Toppe, Bill Mouser, Bob Danner, Dean Chism Dan McKenzie and newcomers: Cliff Evans, Bob Swisher, Jim Lynch, Dan Robinson, Larry Marlowe, Earl Donley, Homer began practice for its first meet. The first meet of the season was the Paris Relays held on Saturday, April 10, in which Homer tied for iourtn 35 with Brownstown, Indiana. The Panthers took but eight contestants. Homer won two relays: both in rec- ord time: Frosh-Soph relay composed of Earl Donley, Bob Danner, Dean Chism and Dan McKenzie and the 880 yd. relay won by Dean Chism, Bob Danner, Lewis Danner, Don Danner. Homer then traveled to Uni High for a triangular meet with Uni High and Schlarman. Homer compiled 66 1 2 points to win the meet. Homer won 8 first places out of a possible 14. On April 17, Homer went to the Pana Open. Here Homer again took second place, this time behind Villa Grove. Homer had but three individuals plus the relay to place. These were Don Danner, second in both the 220 and 440 yd. dashes, Lewis Danner, second in the 180 yd. low hurdles and first in the broad iumo. this for a new record. Dan McKenzie took fifth in the mile. The 880 yd. relay consisting of Don Danner, Lewis Danner, Bob Danner and Dean Chism won in a record time. On April 20 Homer traveled to Rantoul for a dual meet. Homer won six first places but was overpowered by Rantoul. Lewis Danner was victorious in three events: the 100 yd. dash, broad jump, and low hurdles. Don Danner was first in the 440 yd. dash, second in the 220 yd. dash. Dean Chism took first in the 220 yd. dash and the 880 yd. sprint. The next meet was the Illini Valley held at Uni High on April 22, at which Homer placed second. Point get- ters for the Panthers were Lewis Danner, Don Danner, Dean Toppe, Dean Chism, Bob Danner, Bill Mou- ser, and Jim Lynch. The 880 yd. team from Homer won first place. The Urbana Relays were held on April 30. Homer went with hopes of winning this one. They managed to tie for first with Tuscola. The Panthers won ten little trophies in doing so. Don Danner, Lewis Danner, Dean Chism and Bill Mouser supplied the first victory in the Sprint Medley. The second victory was in the half mile relay with Don Danner. Lewis Danner, Bob Danner and Dean Chism carrvine the baton. The Champaign County Track meet was held May 4, at Rantoul. Here Homer was third behind Fisher and Rantoul. Homer managed but one first place: Frosh-Soph 440 yd. relay. The team was composed of Dan McKenzie. Dean Chism, Dan Robinson, and Bob Danner. Dean Chism was second in the 100 yd. and 220 yd. dashes. Lewis Danner placed second in the low hurdles and third in the broad jump. Don Danner was second in the 440 yd. dash. Bob Danner took fifth in the 440 yd. dash. Dan McKenzie took fifth in the mile and Bill Mouser took third in the 880 yd. run. Dean Toppe placed fourth in the shot put. The last meet of the season was the District on May 8, which was held at Urbana. Here the 880 yd. relay team of Don Danner, Lewis Danner, Bob Danner, and Dean Chism took third place honors. This was run in heats and Homer won their heat easily but failed to equal the others by a fraction of a second. TRACK 1955 On April 5, Homer’s Panthers started the 1955 track season right by defeating Oakwood and St. Joe in a triangle meet. The score was 71—52 1 4—16 3 4 respectively. Homer thus won 11 out of 13 events and they took second in the other two events. Two days later Homer attended the Urbana Open where competition was much stiffer. Homer managed to grab 7 points on Dan McKenzie’s second in the half-mile and they gotthird place in the 880 yd. relay. This relay team was composed of Bob, Don, and Lewis Danner plus Earl Donley. On April 9 Homer attended the Paris Relays, their third meet in five days. Here they managed to get fifth place and set two new records. The combined forces of'Bob, Lewis and Don Danner and Earl Donley set a new record in the 880 yd. relay. The same Danners plus Dan McKenzie set a new record in the Sprint Medley Relay consisting of a quarter mile run, two 220 yd. dashes and a half-mile run. After a five day rest, the Homer Panthers overwhelmed Uni High in a dual meet on April 14. Homer won twelve of the fourteen events and placed second the other two. On April 19 Homer was edged by Hoopeston in a riangle in a triangle meet with Ridgefarm being the third party. Homer lost by 1 1 2 points even though they won seven events. On April 21, Homer seized the Illini Valley championship by edging out Fisher 78 to 76. Homer won six out of fourteen events and took second in an equal number of events. It is interesting to note that in all 6 events won by Homer the old record for that event was either tied or broken. 36 Back row: Tom Kibler, Mgr., Jim Lynch, Derryl Wakefield, Dan Robinson, Bob Roach, Don Forsythe, Larry Marlowe, Jerry Rhoton, Cliff Evans, Byron Dodd Front row: Don Danner, Earl Donley, Coach Brown, Bob Danner, Lewis Danner, Dan McKenzie Homer over powered Schlarman in a dual meet on April 26 by a score of 78 to 36. In racking up these points Homer won 9 events and took second in 8 events. The next day at the Tuscola Relays, Homer won fifth place with 17 l 2 points, but three days later, on April 30, Homer won fourth place at the Normal Relays on the same number of points. At this meet the 880 yd. relay team of Earl Donley, Don Danner, Lewis Danner and Bob Danner tied for first place with the Taylor ville team and the Sprint Medley team consisting of the same four boys won second place honors. At the County Track meet, Homer’s 50 points could only get them third place behind Rantoul and Fisher but three days later, on May 6, 35 1 2 points won the Class B Championship for Homer at the Urbana Relays where Homer took first place in the 880 yd. relay with Lewis, Don and Bob Danner plus Earl Donley parti- cipatating. Bob, Lewis, and Don Danner plus Dan McKenzie were first in the Sprint Medley Relay. Dan McKenzie, Derryl Wakefield, Earl Donley and Cliff Evans won first in the Distance Medley. ThcDistance Medley consisted of a half-mile run, a quarter mile run, a 220 yd. dash, and a mile run. Lewis Danner took third place in the pole vault and Dan McKenzie took third place in the half-mile run. On May 13, the District Track meet was held at Urbana. Homer had the distinction to qualify two boys for state competition. Dan McKenzie won first in the half-mile and Don Danner won second in the quarter mile but neither boy qualified for the finals at the State Track meet. Even though they did not qualify for the state finals, it is still a great honor to both the students and to the school, to have them run in the State Track meet. 37 TOURNAMENT NOTES On Friday, Feb. 25, 1955, the Panthers won their own District Tournament, which was the first to be held in our new gymnasium. The Freshmen-Sophomore Tournament wa held the following week in our new gymnasium. The A. B. L. Trojans were the Victors of that tournament.
