It is our fondest hope that the future years will bring as much happiness to her as she gave to us during our seemingly short stay here at Homer High. May the best of good fortune come to her in everything she does. 2 3 7'aMe (fattestfo rfcttHiHiaOutfioK 0la4Ae Activities At Uetics eatunes 4 Ralph Messman Lee Summers James Allison Lawrence Havard Irvin Wakefield Dr. Roy King Student Council The Student Council members are from left to right: sitting; Clyde Smith, Bill Mouser, Fred White-President, Dick Dutton, Glorene Messman-Secretary, Judy Ramsey: standing: Carolyn Strohl, Bill Stauter Leroy Gurnea-Vice President, Deanna Temple-Treasurer. Well, it seems as though this group of people have been very good managers of money. They have brought the council treasury out of the red into a very good financial standing. One of the many things that the council sponsored this year was the carnival, which was enjoyed by most of the students and people of the community. The Council sponsored the assembly programs which the students of the high school enjoyed and took part in. The members tried to have at least one program a week, but sometimes the student talent seemed very limited. We must admit it is plentiful enough, if only some of them weren't too bashful to participate. The Student Council seemed to take over their jobs very well this year. At least, more than they have in the past. All of the dates which were to be reserved for some class activity had to be passed through the council. They also tried to keep the bleachers clean by penalizing anyone who walked on the bleachers. This v(ould have worked if there was some way of enforcing this. The members of the 1953-54 student council have enjoyed working with and for the rest of the students of Homer High School. 7 Jettie Hooker (Miss) 'faculty Marilyn Ward (Mrs.) Roland Wickiser J. C. There are times in the spring of the year when a young man's fancy turns to track instead of love. At least that is what happened to thirty one stalwart young men who braved the first blustery winds of spring to start track practice at Homer High. Among the squad were six lettermen returning from the team which won the Illini Valley, the County meet, the class B division at the Paris Relays, and Urbana Relays. In the first big meet of the season the Panthers traveled to Paris to defend their Class B title and came home with a tie for secondplace. The next big meet was the Champaign County Track Meet at Rantoul where the Panthers had to relinquish their crown to a strong Rantoul team, but still took their share of places, finishing second in the meet. The next feature event was the Illini Valley Conference meet at Champaign, and here the Panthers successfully defended their laurels, totaling a whopping 82 1 2 points. Still they had a battle from a stubborn Fisher team which rolled up 78 1 2 points. The final big meet of the year was the Urbana Relays where the Panthers finished third. The la8tmeet of the year was the District Track Meet at Urbana. The Panthers failed to qualify anyone for the State Finals. Thus ended a successful season. 24 Kneeling left to right: Ralph Spencer, Mike Robinson, Fred White, Leroy Gurnea, Bob Danner, Don Taylor Louie Danner, Franklin Porter, Byron Dodd. Don Danner, Wayne Fisher, Clyde Smith, Dean Toppe, Jerry Fisk and Coach Brown. Standing left to right: Ted Dutton, Dean Chism, Larry Marlowe, Tommy Mast. Ralph McCoy, Jim Lynch, Charles Buck, Larry Peters, Danny McKenzie, Frank Griffin, Gerald Holzinger, Bob Allen, Chuck Benner, Danny Robinson, Earl Donley, Dick Canady, and Dick Dutton. The Homer Panthers who have been prominent in sixman football the past few seasons, began practice on the night of August 3, 1953. Coach Brown, working with a nucleus of seven returning lettermen, whipped the squad into shape, and we started into the season with high hopes. The Panthers started on the right foot by beating St. Joseph and continued from there to a 4 won - 3 lost record for the season; and a 4 won - 2 lost record in the Illini Valley Conference which was good for second place. Five members of the team who we feel deserve special mention for being named on the mini Valley All Star Squad are: Dean Toppe-first team center; DonTaylor-second team end; Mike Robinson and Bob Danner-second team backs; and Don Danner-honorable mention end. Four girls did very fine jobs in helping to urge the team on. They are cheerleaders Joanne Christian, Delores Courtney, Irma Wienke, and Orthalyne Wienke. 26 Homer 22 St. Joseph 14 39 ABL 6 13 Cayuga 32 39 Uni High 13 64 Mahomet 0 24 Sidell 30 12 Fisher 45 ' Z46et cU£ Homer 56 Fairmount 44 44 Villa Grove 57 41 Uni High 52 50 Ogden 57 54 St. Joe 67 54 Sidell 58 48 Unity 72 37 Rantoul 65 69 ABL 48 44 Mahomet 39 47 St. Joe 57 47 Mahomet 44 39 Sidell 55 46 Mansfield 49 54 Fairmount 45 50 Ogden 63 53 ABL 51 72 Uni High 48 66 Fisher 56 27 First row left to right: Dick Dutton, Dean Toppe, Wayne Fisher, Bill Mouser, Mike Robinson, Don Danner, Willard Rothermel, and Byron Dodd. Standing left to right: Dean Chism, Tommy Mast, Ted Dutton, Larry Bott, Jim lynch, Leroy Gurnea, Danny Robinson, and Coach Brown. The Homer High School athletes now began to train their eyes on the basket as Coach Brown greeted twenty one hopefuls for the begin- ning of basketball practice. Everybody had to work hard and fast since there were only nine practices before the first game of the season. After the first game of the season it appeared that the Panthers had a bright future since they defeated a pretty highly regarded Fairmount team by 12 points. How- ever, they ran into trouble and dropped the next nine games. Homer took fourth place in the Sidell Invitational Tournament, but lost their first game in the County Tournament to a tough Fisher team. After the County Tournament the Panthers began to play better basketball, and they wound up their regular season by winning four out of their last five games. The first game in the District Tournament was played at Ridge- farm this year. In the first game the Panthers defeated Young Amer- icabvnine points, but lost their second game to Ogden by four points. Thus the Panthers ended their season with a 10 won - 15 lost record. There were four other people who contributed very much toward this record besides the coach and the players. They were our cheer- leaders; Delores Courtney, Joanne Christian, IrmaWienke, and Donald Verne Robertson. We hartily wish the best of luck to the Panthers in 1954-55. 28 Om ' jJt 9Tjju4- 29 Left to right; Tom Mast, Fred White, Bill Mouser, Dan McKenzie. On the night of November 27, a nice, nippy, fall evening, we were passing the high school, when we were drawn into the gym- nasium by strains of soft, beautiful music and gay, lilting laughter. Arriving upon the scene, we found this to be that mostlooked forward-to event, the 1953-54 Homecoming. Everyone was enjoying himself immensely, so v.e decided to join the merry throng, and spend a wonderful evening danci .g to the music of Gene Trimble and his orchestra, which was the sourceof all the merriment. However, we found that this pleasi re had another source, this being a 56-44 defeat of Fairmount in a bas- ketball game earlier in the evening. Just at this moment the orchestra trumpeted a royal fanfare, and a lovely procession floated through the door, led by a flower girl, Peggy' Kizer, and a crown bearer, Denny Wickiser. They were followed by attendants. Judy Ramsey and Tom Mast, fresh- men, Gloran Buck and Dan McKenzie, sophmores, Madeline Mullis, junior, and Larry Peters, senior; Nancy Wickiser, FHA, and Bili Mouser, FFA; Glorene Messman and Fred White, Student Council, md following these were the King and Queen theu.selves, Did Dutton, junior, and Joanne Christian, senior. After the close of the evenings entertainment, everyone retired with treasured memories of this Hon. coming. 30 'yteatunea Irma Wienke, Alyce Wycoff, Gloran Buck, Joanne Christian. Larry Peters: Shall I go out and mail this letter? Mother: No, this weather isn't fit for a dog. Let your father go out and mail it. Mr. Busenhart walked up to Sally White in Study Hall as she was writing a letter. Who are you writing this letter to? asked Mr. Busenhart. I'm writing it to myself. What does it say? How should I know? I haven't received it yet. Ork Wienke: Mother, do you remember that old vase that's been handed down from generation to generation in our family? Mother: Yes, dear.
