Twen ty two hardy souls an wered Yes' These were Antta Albro Harold Albro Harold Belden Helene Bentlev Ella Brown Lanea Chapman Beverly Cook Margaret Durkee Janlce Emerson Sue Hale Ernle Kellog John Lmdberg Phyllls McConnell Jean Mlller 'Vfarlene Owen Thelma Randall Laura Rumsev ,Ioan Rvan Jane Schenck Edtth Seager and Shlrley Slmp on l'rom the lo of our safarl have prepared thl brlef h1story of our adventures We enjoyed our last llmp e of clytllzatlon at a place called kmder arten Here our first guide Mrs Schaaf tood us all Ill a clrcle and taught us how to t1e our shoes m preparatlon for the long trek ahead Then we struck out boldlv across the great desert vla our sandboxes Poor Laura Rumsev however fell off the caravan and broke her leg To amuse ourselves along the trall we often played Bully Goat Cruff John and Harold always made the most feroclous goblms If we were naughty were sent mto the dark jun le behmd the plano for pumshment On the outskirts of the jungle Jane Schenck Fdlth Seager and Thelma Randall would pltch their tents and then mvlte Erme Kellog Harold Albro and Roy Munro over to play house with them As we rounded a bend of our jungle trail and headed for first grade we found Pat Whltney and Dave Garner waltmg eagerlv to jom our expedltlon A llttle later Malcolm Watrous came runmn from the sava e ylllage of Cortland to the protectlon of our llttle band One dav we were frlghtened by the beating of savage drums but It proved to be only Pat Whitney and ,lean Mlller plavm thelr tom tom We grew so wlld that no gulde could handle us and we had five dlfferent teachers When we reached second grade we met MISS Tllton armed Wllh a bamboo ruler When thls falled to tame us she resorted to puttmg cheese cloth over our mouths when we talked fmuch to the distress of tress of Helene Bentleyl Margaret Durkee Laura Cook and John Ryan nearly got scalped They would often be seen retrlevlng thelr plgtals from mkwells The next year Bev Cook was lnsplred by the grass sklrts of the natlve glrls and thereafter became famous for her own short skxrts Our safarl marched alon the trall every mormng to the musxc of Mrs Phelp s records When the gurls retreated mto the forbldden part of the jungle known as the cloak room to change 1nto thelr costumes for a Hallowe en party the boys lnvaded thelr hldlllg place l1ke wlld head hunter Later a roup of our more talented members showed thelr actmg ablllty by stagmg the great drama Goldllocks and the Three Bears News of the war reached our partv the followlng year and we helped keep up the moral of the servlcemen ln the real jun les by letters dCSCl'lblIlD our lxttle safari Margaret Thelma and ,lan found thls experience very helpful ln later years Industrlously we spaded a llttle corner of our jungle to plant a vlctory garden As we swam a r1ver we declded to play fish but we were mterrupted when Ella re fused to be the whale Thls year we welcomed to our party Mar e Sweeney who has proved a yerv help ful member of the expedltlon At thls tage of our journey we paused sadlv along the traxl to pay our respcct to our departed Shlrley Slmpson left just m tlme to escape a terrlble jungle fare whlch forced us to leave the beaten trall at wth rade and take a long detour throu h CCC barracks Amy Doran came to hare our mconyenlence In slxth grade we were screnaded bv fellow travelers acro s the partltlon who an Noah Ark every day Our adyenturous young boys often pur ued their goal by playlng porn pom pullaway Our safari vltal upply of bubble um ran yery low thus vear and the glrl eyen brayed McGraw s tradln post to replem h our upply Howard bllllx and Dale Bell two new recrult recelyed a rousmg welcome Coralee Bruker popped out of the Cortland Normal jun le ea er to jom u as we reached eyenth gradx Our fame wa ,rowm for Charlene Breed came all the way from Summr rhlll to jom u We met a llttle plgmy named Mar I9 Doane whom we ll o tonymced to jom our party Whlle huntmg one day we found a Lyon nuned Pat who we added to our company Beyerly feared he would haye to leaye our party Sh a ure she had tuberculo 1 but It turned out to be only a ore throat tconrmueo on r-use 49a L16 X y ll, WDM lt B1 X X xxlmllll xt ,J mrvfd ll GPN f , ' I i, l 1- o V 1 S S I nl u ' g n s M ..
