All 0' us had had separate dreams 0' such a journey an, so we finally got to- gether an' under the direction o' our first instructor, Mrs. Shaff, we entered the main Lodge, Homer Academy. This very small group was made up 0' Pat Carlson, Don Collier, Alberta Coon, Bob Dur- kee, Sally Eberhardt, George Foster, Fred J effery, Gerry Lawrence, Ken Little, Sally Litz, Dorcas Mes- senger, Mary Miller, John Riter, Jim and John Ryan, Marlene Randall, Lucille Signor, and Adeline Watson. After learnin' the fundamentals of such a trip, we got supplies an' entered the element'ry stage 0' the journey. The first year we really traveled we follered the Mohawk Valley through the Appalachian Range. We found Wayne Brown, Jim Campbell, an' Mary Hamilton waitin' ter join us, an, when Muriel Clark see us comin' she left her home on the Health Camp Road ter come too. Before the year ended Norma Ayers also became a faithful pardner. After we,d been goin' fer two years, we decided we needed a little entertainment along the way. So in our third year we put on a play, Hansel and Gretai' under the direction o, our leader fer the year, Miss Stevens. Pat Carlson and Johnny Riter took the leadin' parts. Also, durin' this year Joan Gibbs out in Buffalo heard about us an' come hurryin' after us. Jim Campbell, who was chosen ter help a small country group organize a searchin' party, left us in the second year, but came back again fer the fourth. Joyce Spencer,s relation told her about us, so she left New Milford, Pennsylvania, ter help us out an' git her gold. Ruth Garner also came from Georgetown, N. Y. an' give our group a total o' twenty-six searchers. By the end 0, our sixth year, we had reached them great Central Plains an' increased our num- ber ter 29 by addin, Dick Leach, Larry Albro an' Helen Randall. We now had ter gather tergether more supplies an, git ready fer the trip through the great des- ert. Shirley Cowburn left Cortland and Beverly Park come from Summer Hill ter give us their support as we come along ter our seventh year on the trail. By some means Ralph Potter got word we could use him, so he left Stanford, Maine, ter help us out. We was forced ter a great trial in our eighth year as our lodge burned an, we had to make our stay in the cellar o' the Methodist Church. Though we was sad, we was spurred on by the happy faces of Sigrid Anderson an' Ted VanPatten of Preble, LaVerna Lansedowne from Scott, an' Lois Kniffen from Cortland. After the supporters 0' our party fixed up the old lodge as best they could, we moved back inta it just before our tests. Now we found ourselves almost ter the gold an' ready ter turn off Freshman Road. On the cor- ner here we picked up five more sturdy pardners who'd been waitin' fer us. They was Louise Ames from Cold Brook, Richard Davidson from Springfield, Mass.g John Fletcher from Preble, an' Marilyn Briggs an' Paul Stoker from Cortland. Our funds was gettin' pretty low by then so we put on a dance fer ourselves an' other searchers, called the Pumpkin Promenade? At the close of a very happy year we held a picnic at Fillmore Glen where everybody had a good old time. At the end o' this road, jest as we turned off to Sophomore Lane, Ida Call, June Downing, Har- riet Putnam, an' Sally Sharp met us. Dora Breeds left the searchers at Moravia and Fred Morrison left fffontinued on page 591 U01 GDI! gf' l 1... f , X Jr A2 A ' - 'N Q . We was most happy ter have her with us thim first two years after we really hit the trailf, But, after we turned off Sophomore Roadf' the good Lord above seen fit ter take her from us. Cod let her Hnd her gold ahead 0' us an, 'though we was sad ter see her go, we know Hels takin, care 0' her. We grieve no more 'cause we b'lieve that someday soon we,ll see her in that beautiful City of Cold where all is fairer than any gold we could find today. Thus, we dedicate this book, the account o, our travels, ter the mem'ry 0' Sigrid whom we,ll never fergih E111 l X 12 Frank A. Pacquette We had ter have some sort 0, system at our tradin, post so order could be kept while we was passin' ter different rooms. Our previous system was mangled by the buildin' o' some more rooms that blocked our use 0' the north stairs. You can just imagine how hard it was at first ter git all 0' us trav- elers up an' down one set o' steps. Well, under the supervision 0, the head manager 0, the lodge an' the captain 0, this group 0, guards, an efficient system was worked out an' we had very little trouble after that. lt took alot o' patience on the part 0, these guards ter keep peace, but it was attained. They had ter hold their rights in a few cases, but all in all we respect 'em fer it. Every year when we had class elections, we voted fer two people from each class ter serve on the Student Council. This was the governin, body an, was supposed ter notice changes thet needed ter be made in the main lodge an' also ter control the student activities somewhat. This last year there wasn't much ter do. The olhcials in the main lodge took care o' the big things such as providin, us with more class rooms an' there weren,t any little things ter take o,. Anyway, this year,s Council was composed ol eight efficient travelers 0' the trail an' could easily have taken care o' anything that mighta stood in our way. i261 am' - r- ' rn wb A-. expr N .gg 3 g ,.'f f F6-Til. fx rx! The Commercial Clubs' was a ambitious group thet learned how ter spend an' save money an' also how ter keep the law an' make records ol important deals an' stuff like that. They always worked hard an, now that some o' them have found their gold, they're goin' ter spend it ter ga back east an' learn some more. One o' the main things that this club done this year was ter manage the rules o' the election we had at the time the older folks was votini fer the right man ter run our country. We had a lot o' fun doin' it an, the Commercial Club did a lot o' work securin, a machine an, publicity fer our campaign. We thank them now fer makin, this a real success fer us even though it didn't count as far as real votin, was concerned. Also, a word 0, thanks ter Miss Wakin, the advisor o' the club, fer helpinl us out on money deals o' our individual classes. A new club grew up in our lodge this year. It was known as the Art Klub an, was under the supervision o' Mrs. Steger. This here club saw the need fer better advertisin, about the lodge an, along the trail, so they organized ter help us all out. Besides givin, us new an' better ideas fer posters an, dance decorations, the Art Klub had special meetin's when they made things fer their own interest an, amusement. They done work with paints, colors, leather, an' cloth. A lot o' new talent sprung up with these Hkidsw thet we hope will be used in later years too. E271 A A3 M ' r mv. A new mixed chorus was formed under Miss Muriel Whitborne, the director, an' everyone seemed eager ter burst forth with a song. The chorus this year was one 0, the largest Homer Central has had in quite awhile. Carryinl on with last year's plan o' exchange musical festivals in the various schools, Homer took part in two this year. In January the chorus went ter Cincinnatus an' ter Marathon in April. Other programs o' the year consisted o' a Christmas program, an' assembly ter give the rest oi the party a chance ter hear the songs sung at the festivals, an, a exchange assembly held at Cortland Central. Without this added activity perhaps the schools 0' our lodge wouldn't be so overflowin' with me- lodious whistlin' an' singin., This organization seemed ter fill in the dull moments an' helped ter spur us along the trail. They provided the rest 0' the gold searchers with a little fun by sponsorin' a mixer after one o' the ball games. Also another item 0' interest was the annual Father an' Son Banquet. Theyive studied real hard ter learn the proper care fer a home an, family the same as we struggled on our math ani science. Their advisor this year is lVlrs. Simkins, one oi the new leaders. She helped them work out a very interestin' program fer the year. A few oi the things included in the schedule was a mixer ter raise money, as well as ter ease their minds o' ingredients an' textures, an, a trip ter the Syracuse China Works. The twenty brave womeni' started out by singin' carols fer the people 0' the community at Christmas time. Then they set out ter break down religious discriminations by makin, the rounds ter the churches on vari- ous Sunday mornings. Also towards the end 0, the year. they had sewin' bees ter fix up clothes fer some oi the poorer kids, who were very grateful fer their gifts, an, helped the library with tag day funds. Tri-V, composed o' twenty strong men, did their part too. They sponsored a food drive at Thanks- givin' time so that fellow citizens oi the town who were less fortunate could enjoy a hearty meal too. They also hel ed the Tri-Y frirls out on their earolin, tour. . P 1- Both clubs held mixers ter raise money fer their treasury as well as ter add ter the enjoyment oi everyone at the lodge. Aside from their important duties, both Tri-Y an' Tri-V held reg'lar meetin's an' jest had fun. E311 dxf A ri rn .D 0' mfr ASS 5 I -If fx Q11 A sr, -ff A W f - J ' 1 bs. ' Vx.. After losin' three games in a row ter Marathon, McGraw, an' Truxton, the team fin'ly found itself. Startin' with a win over Virgil, they defeated second place Cincy by a score of 2-1 on the home field. Then in the playoffs, they beat Virgil an' lost a hard fought battle at McGraw. McGraw was forced ter go into an overtime period be- fore winnin' 4-3 over the blue an' white. Homer was led by Captain Jim Campbell who scored six goals an' Larry Albro with five. The 1948 baseball team 0' Homer Central School was the winner o' the Cortland County League with a record o' eight wins an' one loss, this only defeat comin, at the hand o, the Marathon team. The team lined up with Albro catching, Hammon at first, Lindberg at second, Campbell at third, un, Hale at the shortstop position in the infield. In the outfield were Ryan, Kile, an' Randall an' Homer picked Stoker or Gormon fer startin, assignments on the mound. The team was led by the timely hittin' an' fieldin, ol Bob Hale. Hale batted .41l9 an' led the team in fieldinf Paul Stoker was the leadin' pitcher with a won an, lost record o' eight an' four. Homer had other defeats, but them was non-legaue games with Cortland an' Tully. Thus the season ended with a record fer the team an' school 0' eight wins an, four losses. Fred was also high in foul shootin' with 28-50 for a .625 average. Campbell an' Albro tied with 132 points each. John Riter was next with 91, followed by Bob Durkee who had 63. However, the Var- sity team failed ter git over the 500 mark an' ended up with a losin' season, winnin' only five games while droppin' thirteen. They finished fourth in league play with four wins an, six losses. Fer the first time, Homer journeyed ter Norwich fer an intersectional game. Homer, bein' out- classed, put up a good fight fer three quarters before losin' out 51-37. In the final game 0' the season, the Blue and White made Marathon go all the way before earnin, a 57-47 decision. The J.V. Team made out much better than the Varsity, havin' a season record o' fifteen wins ter two losses. They won the league with nine wins an' one loss, an' fer the first time in many years Homeris J.V. team defeated the Cortland J.V.,s in a non-league game. Homer was led durin' the season by Wil- lie Miller an' Captain Bill Lindberg, who threw in 126 an' 107 points respectively. Gorman, Morse, Randall, Lindberg an, Miller usually made the startin' line-up. The team featured a fast passin' an' ac- curate shootin' attack which carried them over their much bigger rivals. After not doin' so hot in league play this year, Homer went through the Sectionals with quite a record. The first night schedule featured games between Homer an, Virgil an, Truxton an, Cincy. Homer easily won over Virgil an' took on McGraw's second place team in the next series o' games. That night Homeris team really took home honors as it defeated the Maroon an' White very unexpectedly. This put Homer into a game with league winnin' Marathon. In that game the Buttsmen led at the end o' the half an' put up a valiant fight all the way through. However, Marathon come tearin' into the game in the last quarter ter win by 55-44. We gave km ide fum-4-named. . . Homer Central's 1948 track team was one 0' the best in years. They won the Cortland County meet by a big margin an' placed third at Oneonta. In the Section Championship, which brung tergether the best schools in the central part 0, the state, they placed third. Their only loss come at the hands of Cortland in a dual meet. In the Cortland County meet held at Randall Field, Homer come out on top with 74111 points while Marathon placed second with 42 213 points, an Cincinnatus third with 21 311 points. Homer had eight firsts, failing in only three events ter git first places. Also, Bud Randall won the 100 yd. dash an' finished a close second in the 220 yd. dash. George Foster finished first in the 440 yd, Garry Hart- quist first in the 880, an' John Ryan, winnin' the mile fer the first time, won his event for Homer. In the field events, Larry Nieswinder won the high jump, Jim Campbell the broadjump, Joe Burgett the shot putg an' Paul Stoker finished second in the pole vault contest. The relay team, made up 0' Fred Jeffery, Paul Stoker, John Riter, an' Don Morris, placed first too.
