Dr. Marcella Kelly is a unique woman. She has been honored by the U.S. Congress, many important educational associations, and all major civic groups. She received her Bachelors degree from Fitchburg State Teacher's College and Master's degree from Columbia University. In 1945 she earned her doctorate at Yale University with honors in Secondary Education. Her career in Holyoke began in 1931 as a teacher at Morgan Junior High. ln 1938, she was appointed principal there. She became Supervisor of Elementary Education in 1945 and, in 1946, she was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools. In 1963, she became the first woman Superintendent of Schools in Holyoke's History. She remained at that post until her retirement in the fall of 1973. When Dr. Kelly took over the job of Superintendent, she was faced with many problems. Throughout her career she met and overcame these problems brilliantly. She played a big role in the building of the present High School. The Bi-Lingual Program, Black Culture Stud- ies, and the Drug Education Program have all come about through her outstanding efforts. The city of Holyoke owes much to this outstanding educator. And we, the class of 1974, extend to her our utmost thanks for all she has done for us.
