field the entire Student Councll trooped to that clty ln spxte of ram we stood patiently waiting our turn to see all the great documents of history Again it was time to elect five leaders for our Junior year We chose Don Farr presldeni Marjorie Chase vlce presrdeni Irene Bagmskl secretary Alan D1Carlo treasurer and Roy Provost marshall Alas we were big sxstersl' Held m the gym on Friday evening November 14 the Big Slster Party was a great success and boasted 10092, attendance Every big and llttle sister enjoyed herself to the utmost as the entertainment committee was composed of rep resentatlves from every class Turnlng once more to sports we fund that the Hol yoke High Booters closed their second consecutlve year of wmnmg soccer The team took second place in the Hampshire League and reached the seml finals but were eliminated by Ludlow Next came football As Juniors our boys helped the 1947 team to wm glory and acclalm The big news of the season was the fact that we had retaliated that memorable Chlcopee tussle of 46 Agam a most successful season came to a close and Holyoke High School s grldsters elected Paul Mackey captam for 1948-1949 The social calendar at Holyoke H1gh this year in cluded the Junlor Senior Prom which was held as usual at the Vlar Memorlal Bulldmg on December 30 Basketball time once more From the opening game Catholic our team proved their ablllty and accuracy and rang down the curtaxn on another season with a victorious record of 13 wms and 4 losses If something of importance at Holyoke High School was underway inevitably you would find us Jumors 1n the mists of the actlvlty Accordingly when the cast for Dear Ruth the class play was announced It was only natural to find the names of four Juniors who were featured ln the leading roles Eleanor Hartxgan who played Ruth Julie Balxckl who actually lived the part of the precocious young sister and Bxll Wheeler the hllarnous antagonist were all a credit to Miss Daphne Cullman and covered themselves with glory Ln believable as lt may seem no one left the Lawrence School disappointed that evening Truly Dear Ruth can never be thought of without thinking of the fine Job done by director cast and crew Better late than never IS a famxlxar old expression which may apply to the Student Council Dance Held on Aprll 9 thls year and sponsored by the Student Council, this traditional aH'alr was held at the ll ar Memorial Bulldmg A few months later and a memorable climax to our Junior year was the ever popular Herald Dance Atop the Roger Smith Hotel and despite showery weather the dance was a flaming success Not even the weather dampened our spmts And with this our busy Junior year ended We dns missed for the summer with the pleasant thought that ln a few months we would return as seniors As seniors our status ln the school was of course changed Almost before we had reacquamted ourselves w1th our friends and before we had become accustomed to our new distlnctlon many things were underway As we chanced lnto the Llbrary we were dlsmayed for Mlss Laporte had retired Vle will always remember our favorite llbrarlan for her patient help and loving ad v1ce However we were somewhat consoled m the fact that Miss McCarthy would be there to help us A few weeks later our school life agam was darkened We re turned to school Monday September 27 to hear that Miss Sarah McGrath one of our Semor English teachers had been sernouslylnjured and would not be with us for several weeks Holyoke Hugh s gridsters opened their 1948 campalgn by defeating Turners Falls and closed the season nme games later by emerging victorious over Chicopee Thanksgrvmg morning Our thanks go to our splendld coaches Mr Roberts Mr Regan and Mr Hart Our congratulatlons to Paul Mackey our captam and his capable team Agam our soccer team won glory and ran off with the laurels from Hampshire County Indeed the booters It was Frlday evening November 19 that Holyoke H1gh School s little slsters were formally mtroduced to their bug slsters The occasion naturally bemg the Big Sister Party As a result of the combmed efforts of Mr Fred Mock ler Semor Class ad visor and the ,lunlor and Semor class ofhcers who this year were Donald Farr preszdent Irene Bagmskx vzce preszdenl Constance Baush secre tary Roy Provost lreasurcr and Francis Nlezgoda marshal the Junior Semor Prom was enjoyed by all who attended We came back from our Christmas vacation with smiles on our faces and greeted our teachers but lo' one of them had left as Miss and returned as Mrs The smiles all vanished However after bemg assured our favorite Miss Cullman or rather Mrs Harrington would be w nth us till the june smiles reappeared and we wished her all the good luck and happiness a teacher and friend as wonderful as she deserves Mid y ear exams came and with a splrxt of hve or due sunk or swim most of us managed to survive the ordeal B5 this time the basketball season was well under way Our starting game had been xn the newly re modeled court at the City Hall The 1948 49 basketeers with St. Michaels to the winning match with Holyoke are a great Credit to their new Coach Bob Mclntyre-
