CLASS HISTORY Connle Baush RADUATION day is almost here Yet as we anticipate that happv hour we momentarily pause to record the illustrious history of the class of 1949 Three years ago dazed and bewrldered we sophomores sought refuge IH the auditorium of Holyoke High School There Mr Fitzpatrick after welcommg our class familiarized us with school rules He explained that we were expected to be in the rlght place at the right time Then as poor troubled little creatures we wandered through the halls Yet acting upon the amazmg advice of someone who knew we managed to be m the right places most of the time After this lnitlatnon we were part of Holyoke High School In fact we thought hlgh school was a fine place until October 14 1946 On that great day our first re port cards were lssued Alasl' The faculty did not think that we were as brilliant as we really were Our first class officers were Thomas O Connor pres: den! Marjorie Chase Uwe preszdenl Julie Chwalek verrelaru Floyd Sanford Ireasurer and Alan Richards marshall Several capable student counsellors aug mented th1s representatlve group The football season was ushered in Friday October 4 with a football rally Our band under the competent direction of Mr Edward lxowak provided pep and enthusiasm L1ttle wonder that our team with this start and with the splendid training of Coach Roberts was successful pnlmg up six victories And to be su e our soccer team the first since 1941 coached by Mr William Bosworth duplicated their record On October 25 sponsored by the Student Council came the annual Big Sister Party Colloqulally speak mg we little sisters had a super tnme that night How we enjoyed the hrlarlty of the evenmg' How we mar velled at the talent displayed' The Junior Senior Prom a Yule Time event was a great social occasion Although neither ,Iaunty Juniors nor Sophisticated Seniors we proved that we could dance Agam sports stole the lime light For we were justly proud of our basketball team Even the Junior Varsity composed entirely of underclassmen rose to fame Un defeated they graciously took the Second s Valley League Title Our hockey team also took honor They received the Western Massachusetts Title With spring came one of the biggest events of the year the class play Our Hearts Were Young and Gay The untlrmg efforts of Miss Grace Healy and the unflaggmg zeal of the entire cast were well rewarded w1th success Summer time was well on its way and a wee bit wiser than on that lnevltable first day we left Holyoke High School for the last time as Sophomores The fall of 1947 found us Juniors How proud and how thnlled we were to bear this title which dts tmgulshed us a upper classmen The summer months had made a few evident changes at Holyoke High School First and foremost of lm portance was the new program occasioned by the fall ure of the remodeled lunchroom to open on time Then we found a few changes had taken place within the faculty Mlss Grace Healy teacher of speech and drama tics at H H S had resigned In order to accept a position at Hmgham High School She was replaced by Miss Daphne Cullman Like wise Mr Gerald Hafey teacher in the Engush Department resigned during the summer to start the study of law at Harvard University Alas Mlss Fenton teacher of clothing for many years had retired and was replaced by Miss Mary Kane Somethmg had been added to our sports world The first football jamboree ln Western Massachusetts sponsored by Holyoke High School was held ln Sep tember At Mackenzie Stadium in face of extreme heat ten teams from surrounding towns participated nn the affair The Student Council began its organization by an nouncmg that Mlss Gertrude Grlfiin and Mr James Kennedy had been elected as faculty advisors Shortly after this when the Freedom Tram rolled mto Spring , - u - 1 1 - ' - n - , ll n - ' n . , .
