FTER we have left the portals of Holyoke Hlgh School we w 1ll not only cherlsh fond memorles of class mates and teachers but we vull also recall wlth pleasure the many frlendshlps we have formed among the other people 1n the school who helped to make our days there happy ones A person whose prcture w1ll ever be before us IS Mrs George F F1tzgerald who has been the guld mg force behlnd the lunchroom for many years Every her wxth her cheery smxle hustlmg about grvmg a helplng hand here and there and quletly but efliclently supervlslng the tremendous task of servlng over elght hundred students lfl a comparatlvely short perlod of t1me Our contacts w1th Mrs F1tzgerald or Nellle F1tzgerald as she IS affectlonately called by her assoc1 lates have been most pleasant We are delighted that we have thls opportumty of g1v1ng her a place of honor 1n our Annual Mrs F1tzgerald whose malden name was Nellle Boland was born 1n Ireland but spent only a few years of her l1fe there After the death of her parents she came as a small chxld to make her home w1th an aunt 1n Amerlca When she was a young glrl she accepted a pos1t1on 1n the fimshmg room of a Holyoke paper mxll Here she soon won prommence as one of the leaders among the women employees She was untmng ln her efforts to obtam faxr wages for her s1ster workers m the paper lndustry In later years when women were demanding the franchlse Mrs F1tzgerald was one of the first to cham p1on the cause In flag decked cars she travelled the county wlth other leaders dxstrlbutlng llterature addressmg rallxes of men and women and urging women s rxghts m government She was one of a party of Holyoke suffraglsts who went to Washmgton wlth the Massachusetts delegates to make a plea before Senators Lodge and Weeks On learmng that the Massachusetts senators were unable to recelve the Holyoke un1t the Honorabl Allen T Treadway our representatlve 1n Washmgton mvrted the party from h1s d1str1ct to state thelr case to h1m Mrs F1tzgerald ID appearmg before Mr Treadway argued the whole suffrage problem by descr1b1ng the case of one lndxvxd ual a janltress at Holyoke Hlgh who was pald only a port1on of the salary gxven to men for the same work Mrs F1tzgerald stated wlth determmatlon that she was gomg to work for suffrage untll the leglslature had passed falr laws controllmg women s wages It was the consensus of oplnlon that thls plea made by Mrs F1tzgerald was one of the strongest arguments pre sented to the members of Congress Mrs Fxtzgerald has always retamed her keen mterest m polltlcs she IS an ardent supporter of the Democratxc party In 1920 along mth Presldent Mary E Wolley of Mount Holyoke she snared a place of honor on the State Democratlc t1tket as presldentlal elector These two women were among the first to recelve recognltlon from a pol1t1cal party state pol1t1cs No woman has glven more generously of her tlme to projects that concern the welfare of Holyoke than has Mrs Fxtzgerald Durmg the World War she served as a member of the Faxr Prlce Com mlssxon For years she has been a member of the Vlhltmg Street Fund Commlsslon Mrs F1tzgerald a prlze wlnner at many exh1b1t1ons dlrected over a perlod of years canning classes for the school children of the c1ty Whenever she has heard of any md1v1dual man woman or child who needed encouragement advxce or ass1stance she has w1ll1ngly lent a helpmg hand Mrs F1tzgerald IS a sh1n1ng example of a woman whose falth, sympathy courage and generoslty have won the heart of everyone w1th whom she has had deal 1ngs Although we graduates shall no longer have the pleasure of dally assocxatlon Wlth her we look forward to contmulng our frlendshlp wxth Mrs F1tzgerald as we pursue our dally round of SOCl3l and c1v1c aCtlVltlCS , 1 - ' - ' r 1 Y Y y 3 ' 1 , , , , . w I V ' - V V- . . - . 7 dal' 0f 0'-lf three Yeafs in H01Y0ke High, W6 1'13V6 SCSU Nor have Mrs. Fitzgerald's efforts been confined to Y Y D U - . v V I Y . .
