X in llEllIlIHlEll lll . .0 A SIC ITER AD ASTRA SUCH IS THE WAY TO THE STARS URING the past year there was added to our Faculty a newly ordained Priest, The Reverend John Francis Davis. An exemplar of all that is to be desired in Catholic manhood, he is a holy and saintly priest. The sheep in this shepherd's care need never fear for they are guarded well because such gold can never tarnish. Hence it is not strange that Father Davis has rapidly endeared himself to all, both in and out of school. We, the Class of l944, love and respect him for the tireless effort he has devoted both to our scholastic work as well as our outside activities. Also, we realize that by the firm religious faith and convictions he has imparted, all our lives have become more enriched, and thus we may be enabled to strive all the greater for the honor and glory of Almighty God. To Father Davis then, this yearbook is respectfully dedicated and along with it go our humble prayers for the continuance of his holy work in the years to come. We know that future classes will come to feel towards him as we do, and will likewise regret to leave his faithful and beneficial guidance. -ROBERT JOHNSTON lt is singular to note that both the Curate and the Pastor are from Jersey City and that two of the Ordinandi, The Reverend Charles R. Callahan and The Reverend James Driscoll, pictured in this book, are both classmates of The Reverend Father Davis and they are both Monsignor Watterson's boys. lHE llEVEllEllll flllHEll RCU wfgrfimfw. JUHH FHHHCIS DHVIS HIS EXCELLENCY The Most Reverend THOMAS JOSEPH WALSH ARCHBISHOP OF NEWARK 6 The Right Reverend HENRY J. WATTERSON THE RIGHT REVEHEHD HEHHU J WHTTEHSUH 1 1 1 1 s HEN MONSIGNOR WATTERSON came to Westfield, he had nothing to start with except a small wooden church. Today, as we look upon the new and beautiful buildings of Trinity we wonder how Father ever had the courage to at- tempt such a great task, and we marvel at the goodness of God in helping him to accomplish it. A We know that if it had not been through the Grace of God, Monsignor Watterson's diligent work, and the ever-ready help of the parishioners, this would not have been possible. Father Watterson was rewarded for his undying ambition in 1941, when Our Holy Father elevated him to the rank of Rt. Rev. Monsignor, and he was again re- warded this year by seeing his Church, Schools, Convent and Rectory completely free of debt. Now, as we prepare to leave Trinity, we the Seniors of 1944, can not do so without thanking him for all that he has done for us during our years with him. May God bless and protect him always. -Kay Lenahan BELUVED PHSTUH FHIIUIIII RIGHT REVEREND MONSIGNOR HENR J. WATTERSON Dean of both schools Instructor in Religion REVEREND JOHN F. DAVIS, A.B., S.T.L. For so long have the two been allied that they seem as one. Sister Grace Anita is Holy Trinity and Holy Trinity is Sister Grace Anita. Few schools can boast of such superior and diplomatic leadership as she has given to us and to all the stu- dents of Holy Trinity. Kind, sympathetic and friendly to all, she has shown us a true and lofty example of constant devotion to our divine Lord. She has ceaselessly labored to inculcate within us those virtues indicative of true Catholicity and for which we will be everlastingly indebted to her. Our hum- ble words seem slight and inadequate in the light of former tributes to her leadership expressed by many who are .even now fighting tor those very truths that she has so steadfastly endeavored to give us. Hence, we hasten to add our gratitudes and prayers to those of our predecessors that God may Bless and protect Sister Grace Anita. -ROBERT S. Who would be writing an eight page letter to me? I glanced at the last page to see from whom it was. Much to my surprise I found it signed by Betty Boate', a newly made executive of the Telephone Co. I turned back to the first page and proceeded with the letter. ' ' March a, 1954 Dear Rita: So much has happened since I last saw you that I don't know where to begin. l've been travelling for the Company and I know you will enjoy hearing about my experiences. Wlhile driving through that new high-class section of Northern New Jersey, I came upon an exclusive Art Academy owned by none other than Jean Rossi, who is ably assisted by Mary Essig. That evening the three of us saw the latest Broadway hit starring Miss Anita Pangborn, Kay Lenahan and Mr. John McCarthy. Doing a fine job with costume directing, was Miss Rita Cavanaugh. They told us, after the performance, of Dick Kouiba's success with his Alaskan Cannery, and Rita Stavish's good fortune in the Business world. And did you know, Rita, that Clemintina Cocchia, Dolores McCormack and Clemintina Scala have all become prominent private secretaries? Not to 'mention our most important Certified Public Accountant, Miss Ann Carniglia. I guess you have heard that Doris Byrne has been made manager of Wbolworth's. But have you 'heard about Bill Benedict's success in the Navy? He's just become a Lieutenant. And it's not news that John Mclntyre is an Army Pilot. I was in the Westfield Trust Co, last week and found that George Wolf is now President of the bank. Important as that is, it seems rather insignificant when we realize Bob Messler is President of the Country, doesn't it? While I was there Joe Tihul came in to deposit a ,few hundred. He's had such luck with his poetry! Before we knew it we were talking about our old class, and I discovered that John Kearse and Edmund Cavanaugh have become the man'- agers of the leading Pro- Football team. And wait 'till you hear this! Shirley DeRagon and Jim Minoque have opened a language school, majoring in Latin. But they are not the only ones who have taken to teaching. Lois McCarthy is now a Physical Education and Elocution teacher, and Peggy McCusker 'has a very exclusive Commercial School in the city. Believe it or not, Rita, four from our old class have entered the Nursing Profession, Betty lremonger, Irene Boyle, Gloria Forgash and Margaret Neil. They tell me Dot Traynor who's had such success with her singing career does her bit in keeping the patients happy. In the hospital, by the way, where Bill Downey is head physician. Last night, I read in Metronone that Catherine Lappin is singing at the Aragon Ballroom. And isn't that swell about Bob Johnston? He's finally attained that well earned success as the most popular band leader in the country. I came across one of Dick Hanley's articles. He is Metronone's most famous critic now, you know. I guess I have bored you long enough, Rita, and I must close. Hope to see you soon. That will certainly be like old times again. As ever, Betty I folded the letter and replaced it in the gay colored envelope. Betty always loved gay things. Slowly my mind wandered back to Trinity in l944. --RITA BROWNLEE 51 llll HHUHIE UR llEHSllll p ,si, THE MINSTREL SHOW i AST February, the Senior boys, seeking new adventure, ,presented something never before s attempted in the annals of Trinity, This journey intof the unknown was greeted with, srsr praise and encouragement from every source., Many a gallon of midnight oilwasi iccmsumed as the fboys assembled on every free evening to rehearse sa, show ,without any outside ilfs help, whatsoever.
