Since their arrival in this country from France in l84l, they have continued in rapid growth and expansion throughout the entire country. Thus, it has become necessary to divide the United States province into the Mid-West, Eastern, and South-West provinces. This decision was carried out by the General Chapter of the Congregation in Rome. The Brothers' long tradition of progress and achievement is being extended. It is here primarily that the student strives to acquire that ability to communicate his knowledge and his constructive contribution to a swiftly moving world. For this important skill in expressing his ideas in writing and in speaking, it is the student's daily task to build a working vocabulary, to study thoroughly the structure of the sentence, the paragraph, and the theme, and to acquire the habit of spelling correctly consistently. Progress is measured through his improvements in the regularly assigned compositions and planned speeches. To further personal initia- tive and progress the English department conducts the annual declamation, elocution, oratory and essay contests. Left to right: Stanley Krall, James Kross, August Wanka, Mitchel Kaminski, Zens Forowicz, Lucian Zygmunt, James Gorczyn- ski and Wenceslaus Sudol. of the People the World Over The study ofa foreign language, though considered seemingly fruitless and unnecessary by some, is a definite step toward the development of the full man. Linguistic studies have a far-reaching scope, they embrace not only the tedious learning of declensions or coniugations, but also a method of training our intellects to know, to think, to understand. lt is through the study of languages that students gain a deeper insight and appreciation of the cultures of other lands, it enables one to recognize alien thought patterns and to evaluate the cultural contributions of these nations to the world of literature, science, and the arts. Mastering foreign languages is not only useful but mandatory if we, the citizens of tomorrow, are to cope with the social and economic ills of our multilingual globe. Mastery of one or two foreign languages seems almost nil, never- theless, it is one step closer toward international understanding and harmony. Page 31 The Drama of Civilization. . As Seen Through the History of the World History is a fascinating subiect - a giant mirror reflecting the colorful, turbulent pag- eantry of yesterday's world. lts exploration enables students to relive moments of ioy and sadness, victory and defeat, which came to pass centuries ago, events which have helped to shape our world of today. World history - a great global tour - tra- verses the seven continents, thousands of years and scores of civilizations. Centuries which have elapsed since the construction of the pyramids until the present days of unrest whiz by, pausing only momentarily before our eyes. U.S. history arouses admiration and pride in students when they realize that our fore- fathers forged this modern power that is the United States out of the wilderness and for- eign rule. Yes, this is history on the march. While studying the past we live the present and de- termine the future, realizing that history is a constant repetition of events, the characters and settings may change, but the plot remains intact. , gs l ff 1,4 ,Z , 1- 'firipr U-Qi : 3 figgtgfg Qgcfifg y j' xxgijigvghfff f t H s- . As time progres- sed the once outwardly confused and incoherent characteristics of freshmen were molded into the unified, self-confident composure of sophomores, transformation into true Trinity men began un- der the skilled guidance of the faculty. With this new maturity came the realization of the threefold development of man: physical, intellectual, and moral. Thus mindful of the lofty ideals inculcated into them here at Trinity, these young men look forward to the distinction of being known as upper-class men. It is surely a memorable one, for it is during this time that the freshmen adiust themselves to the many colorful phases of high school life. As they become more and more accustomed to this new routine, they undergo many challenging experiences, which prove high school lite to be a very active one. Participat- ing in various sports, extra-curricular activities, social events, such as dances, and study- ing advanced subiects are but a preview of the thrills in store for them during their stay at Trinity. Page 75 to Student Life Convinced of the importance that in union there is strength, the Young Christian Students set up an organ- ized force of Catholic action to coun- teract secularism and to restore all things in Christ. Working in small informal groups, they make resolutions to be carried out, always keeping in mind the bet- terment of the student and the school. They strive to perfect the religious, scholastic, and social life of youth. Progress, although apparently slow, makes its way through this determi- nation. Our Varsity Bancl . . . In Numerous Parades and Civic Events An enormous amount of practice is necessary before a group of high school students, still tilled with thoughts of vacation, emerges as a coordinated band unit. With this as their goal, two weeks before classes ofhcially resumed, members of our varsity band, under the direction of Brother Alfred, C.S.C., spent their evenings drilling in preparation for their debut at the Riverview Mardi Gras Contest of Bands. Hard work and enthusiasm had its re- ward as our band won second prize in this event. With the advent of the football season, the band dis- played its skill and precision in a variety of drills at the halves, and through the lively tunes played during the games contributed greatly to the general spirit of the football season. As the year further progressed, the Trinity band, par- ticipating in numerous parades and civic events, won ac- claim for our school by its poise and smartness. Among these notable events were I am an American Day, the State Street Christmas Parade, the Polish May Day Parade, and the Nurses' Parade. Top center, left to right: SENIOR BAND OFFICERS: D. Brother Alfred and his assistant Frank Zielinski of the class of 1953 going over music in preparation for the spring concert. Page 81 A choral group has the unique, almost enchanting ability to enliven any occasion, any memorable event, and thus impart an atmosphere of solemnity or ex- uberance to any gathering. Within the realm of song lies this wondrous, mystifying quality which can boost waning courage and morale, it can bring con- tentment and a feeling of security along with the restoration of a peaceful spirit of mind in the midst of one's hurried activity. Such has been the role of our Glee Club, and dur- ing the past year they have admirably fulfilled those requisites demanded of a good choral group. The development of volume control and harmony cannot be accomplished within a matter of days, the band room resounded daily with their unihed vocal efforts, and many hours of intensive practice pre- ceded each public appearance. Although composed mostly of underclassmen, the Glee Club, ably directed by Brother Alfred, has rendered several hne per- formances during the past school year. Among these appearances was the annual display of singing talent at the P.T.A. Christmas party, which received a hearty response from all those present. The maior undertaking of our choral group, how- ever, was the spring concert, March of Melody , presented on Sunday, April 28th. This unified effort of the entire music department required many hours of incessant practice, but hard work had its reward, for as the curtain closed on their final major appear- ance of the year, the auditorium echoed with ap- plause and favorable comments. The Glee Club's finale for this year's musical ac- tivity was the singing of the Baccalaureate lVlass in Holy Trinity Church. F1 2 - A - :M Q QgQ ' 1, f we QR i if A li - - K xx 5 . Reporters on School Life other admirable traits, diligence and perseverance, are acquired by faithful completion of the various assignments. Some of the highlights of this year's publications were an interview with a local T.V. entertainer, Ronnie Born, and the article on Mr. Ted Jarosz, the new head football coach at Trinity. The annual issue of HORIZONS, made possible by the contributions of the student body of Trinity, enabled the students to display their literary ability. The members aid the faculty in the use of audio-visual equipment, and in turn, through this assistance, they learn to become skilled technicians in the eliicient operation and care of various types of audio- visual equipment. The club is moderated by Brother Joseph Chvala and the following officers were installed for the past school year: President, Daniel Placzek: Vice-president, Thomas Ciszewski, Secretary, Ronald Wrobel, and Treasurer, Richard Nlackiewicz. Later in the school year after months of experience and after passina the qualify- ing test given by the University of lllinois, the distinauished certiicate, School Proiec- tionist of lllinois, was awarded several members of the club. This was a fitting climax to a year of successful achievement and service. The hilarious situations, created by the appearance of St. Francis of Assisi on the campus of St. Ignatius University, a Jesuit operated institution of learning, and the conversion of the entire football team lust before a maior game of the season, were well enacted by the members of both casts. The evening's entertainment was further heightened by a concert of semi-classical selections played between acts by members of the school band, under the direction of Brother Alfred. Attendance at the regular monthly meetings and the affairs sponsored by the organization has been very encouraging. Among the activities sponsored by the group are the Father and Son Banquet, the Autumn dance, the Christmas party, the Bingo and Card party, and the Gradua- tion breakfast. Sm' -P Tigers Face Powerful North Section Squads Hampered, however, by iniuries and a lack of depth, the Tigers' fortunes were soon to discover a rapid and abrupt change. In the season's section opener St. George, the most powerful squad in the North Section, outran a set of limping linebackers and iolted the Tigers 40-O. Next came highly regarded Weber, but again costly iniuries - this time to three of the starting backs, left the Tigers gasping for breath as the Red Horde turned a sup- posedly close battle into an out-and-out romp with a score of 33-6. The Fenwick affair was much the same story. Greatly out-classed but equally matched in spirit, the Tigers tried desperately to stem a powerful Friar running attack. The Friars, however, were not to be stopped as they ripped the Trinity team 55-13. An interesting fact about the score was that the Tigers were one of the three teams able to cross the Fenwick goal line in ten games. This definitely displayed the 'righting spirit of our Tigers. The Tigers next met vastly improved Gordon Tech. For three quarters our team held the hapless Rams to but five downs, but in the fourth period, a fumble led to a Gordon score. Afterwards, the Rams added a safety and another touchdown and tripped our Tigers 15-O. Top left: Joe Szalkiewicz is swamped by Gordon players after short gain in Gordon-Trinity battle. Varsity Football Team Acknowledging the efforts of those boys who gave so generously of their time and talents to bring recognition to our school by their work on the gridiron, the school proudly presented awards to the following. Arnold Blaszynski, Larry Bonk, Richard Grygienc, Ted Lakamecki, George Mecko, Mitchell Moos, Dan Podpora, Ronald Sowizrol, Ed Steck, Joe Szalkiewicz, Len Tabor, and Casimir Thomas were recipients of iackets and Maior T's. Underclassmen receiving sweaters and Maior T's were Chester Lis, Gregory Lopatka, and Joe Woicik, while Maior T's were awarded to Greg Owcarz, Richard Dzingel, Don Pilch, Clem Prusko, James Schmidt, Louis Zielinski, and Managers Frank Viscariello and Mitchell Kaminski. Junior Varsity letters were awarded to Ken Chrusciel, Nortie Diciolla, Wayne Dominowski, Conrad Dziewulski, Chester Galiga, Fred Grygiel, Robert Kawalek, Ed Kukula, Larry Mallek, Dan Morales, Pat Moritz, Art Mueller, Michael Niemotka, James Palacz, Cliff Parzygnat, Richard Pod- hainy, Jerome Ricard, Stan Sowizrol, John Squillo, Bob Stopka, Ray Storce, Dennis Suderski, Robert Szczesny, William Totzke, Fred Trelka, Larry Wisniewski, and Dan Woods. Season in Review 1Continued3 Humiliated by this string of four straight defeats, the Tigers were on the prowl again. This time the Loyola Ramblers were to be the Tiger victims. The Tigers nipped the Ramblers 14-13, thanks to the reliable toe of Casimir Thomas which added the two points after touchdown, the second of which provided the Tiger victory margin. In an all out effort to end the season with the same success with which they opened it, the Tigers met a powerful De Paul squad with a new plan of attack. The Demon height which averaged three inches more than the Tigers' proved too big a deficit as the Demons completed 23 passes and acquired a 27-7 win. THE TEAM Front row, left to right: F. Under the able leadership of Coach Gene Wierzbicki, the Tigers were able to capture eight of ten practice tilts before compiling a 10-2 league mark and performing remarkably well in the city play-oFfs. ln the league opener, the J-V's routed Weber's rugged Red Horde, 47-38. The dominating board play of Tigers Don Balicki and Ted Lakomecki starved oFf every possible Horde comeback attempt. Again under the leadership of Don Balicki and Ted Lakomecki, the Tigers tripped St. George, 56-32. Balicki accounted for 21 points, Lackomecki for 12. The Fenwick affair brought together the two best teams in the Catholic League Junior division, but again the superior ball control technique of the Tigers aided in trimming the Friars, 48-40. With Bob Nlulsoff assuming the role as pace-setter, the Juniors made it ive and six in a row by trouncing Gordon Tech 78-48, and slipping past Loyola with a score of 67-57. Page 112 Third Place Winners in League Play-Offs ln the opening game of the second half, the St. George Dragons upset the spirited Juniors 55-Si . . . Then at Weber Ted Lakomecki's tree-throw shooting accuracy added T6 points to the Tiger cause who came through with another victory . , . Fenwick avenged their previous setback with a score of 55-Si. Nevertheless, on February 24, the Tigers clinched the section crown in nipping Gordon's second-place Rams 58-56 in one of the most thrilling games of the season . . . The Tigers then went on in their winning streak by upsetting Loyola by a score of ol-48 and De Paul 59-57 in an overtime game. A fitting climax ofthe Tigers' outstanding season came when they brought home to Trinity fthe Hrst time in the school's long history? the distinction ofa tie for third place in the city's Catholic league play-offs, beating De La Salle in an overtime game by 56-54 and losing one of the finest games of the season to St. Elizabeth by only two points. fongratulations to the coach, the eam, and the entire athletic Cle- iartment for this unprecedented ecard set this year at Trinity. ipecial recognition, as being se- ectecl for either the first or sec- incl teams by the Chicago Daily Jews and other leading newspa- iers, goes to Don Balicki, Robert tlulsoti, Ted Lakornecki and Ron- ild Topczewski. nw op: Jon Balicki drives in for a lay-up, saving Loyola defenders behind. op right: -ob Mulsotif tops ball in for two ioints, as Ron Bristen and St. tary s players watch. ottom left: ed Lakomecki lets go with a two anded jump shot over the out- tretched hand of the Weber cager. ottom right: ob Grygiel keeps the ball away rom the anxious Weberites. Page ll3 Senior Squad . . . Against Heavy Competiti The Senior team was not as fortunate as was the Junior squad. Unable to Gnd a winning combination, the Seniors captured but one game, that against a relatively strong parish league contender. Despite the dismal record, the Tigers still had their sparks of glory even in defeat. On six occasions during the prac- tice round, they came relatively close to victory, losing by less than six points. Of these six, the Waller, St. Michael, and Leo battles were decided in the closing minutes while the Alumni came through in overtime to nip the Tigers, 49-46. At the De Paul tournament, the Seniors held a slight edge over Loyola, the eventual Catholic League North Section champs, only to fall in the fourth, 54-50 Still hampered by a lack of unified strength, the Tigers opened their Catholic league season by being trampled by Weber, St. George, and Fenwick in rapid succession. The Gordon Tech tilt was the best Tiger performance of the first round. Loyola, with a trouncing victory, and De Paul, in a close hard-fought battle, dealt the Seniors two more successive setbacks in concluding the first round. on .. by H, Standing, left to right. F. In a Fight-to-the-Finish Season In the second round, the Senior Tigers showed flashes of brilliance in all but the Fenwick affair. Against St. George they were able to match the Dragons for three quarters, but in the fourth, their efforts fell in vain. A Weber, George Medrick and Ron Topczewski combined their efforts to tie the Horde at half-time and keep the Tigers reason- ably close throughout. However the Tigers lost again. The last three games were by far the best successive performances by the Tigers during the '56e'57 season. At Gordon, they staged a terrific comeback overcoming a twenty point gain, only to fade in the last 27 seconds, losing 63-60. Next Loyola Ram- blers, needing only one more victory to clinch a play-off berth, were given their season's biggest scare, as the Tigers using an effective stall led by a T9-18 score at half-time. The second half, however, again held the story, as the Ramblers clinched their playeoff bid, 59-39. When the De Paul Demons met the Tigers in the season's Hnal, the Tigers were a determined squad. From start to finish, the Seniors, paced by Greg Lopatka and W. Woicik, fought with a burning desire to win, but as the hnal buzzer sounded, the Tigers found themselves on the short end of a 73-70 score. Top left: W. Woicik lofts a soft hook against Loyola.
