A lighthouse of knowledge since the turn of the century . . . At this present site for the past twenty-eight years . . . Today, the seat of learning for 670 boys . . . Enrolling students from several countries and from 81 parishes throughout the Chicago area. Page 4 ft I. ■— I Wi ! ' TT Out of the Darkness . . . Into the Dawn As dusk envelops each hamlet and city scattered across the face of the globe and the piercing lights begin their vigil through the silent watches of the approaching night, we are forcibly reminded of the dark ages recurring again and again in man ' s continuous story of civilization. The narrative of his journey through life has been dark- ened with ignorance, prejudice, injustice, and crime. Through this blackness of malignant evils corroding society, comes the only light, that of knowledge strengthened by faith, which will assuredly illuminate the way to peace and restore the dignity of man everywhere. With the acquisi- tion of knowledge based on prin- ciples of Eternal Truth and the possession of an unwavering faith as the cornerstone of all our en- deavors in life, ignorance, preju- dice, sin, and crime take their ignoble places in the darkened past with the smoldering ruins of con- flict and war. For the source of this infallible light, we must look beyond the planets and stars to Him Who is the Cause of all truth. This is the light that will endure when man-made lights flicker their last and the suns are dead and dark. This is the light that will lead us out of the darkness into the dawn of a better world. A Silver Jubilee is a memorable occasion in the life of every Religious who faithfully perseveres in carrying out his dedicated role in life. We now pay tribute to a member of our faculty, Brother Romanus. C.S.C., who celebrates this year his twenty-fifth year as a Brother of Holy Cross. Brother Romanus, coming from Minnesota, entered the Congregation ' s postulate at Watertown, Wisconsin, on March 1 1, 1930, after spending five years in business life and after pursuing commercial courses at Gregg College and Crane Junior College. On June 20, 1930, he began his canonical year of novitiate at Notre Dame, Indiana, in preparation for his life as a future religious of Holy Cross. He made his first profession of vows on July 2. 1931. and then continued his studies at the University of Notre Dame where he received his degree in history. He later did graduate work in library science at Catholic University and Rosary College which led to his meriting a life-time license as a librarian. Brother has taught in Indianapolis. Albany, South Bend, and Chicago. He came to Holy Trinity in 1935 and, with the exception of six years at which time he taught elsewhere, has been with us to the present day. With a sense of satisfaction Brother Romanus can look back over the past twenty-five years of a life of dedication to God. his community, and to youth. We consider it a great privilege to add to the festivities of this joyous anniversary. In the spirit of gratitude and abundant hope for the future, we dedicate this 1956 Trinitarian. At the crossroads of America, in the very heart of one of the worlds largest cities of skyscrapers, subways, industries, and the ceaseless activity of some three million people, stands a pillar of light, Holy Trinity High School. From under her arches emerge individuals trained to set right the paths that have been darkened and twisted through human imperfections. Not being satis- fied with imperfect knowledge, she instructs her wards with the wisdom that comes only from the Seat of all knowl- edge. Augmented even more by her religious training, her scope becomes all inclusive. Page 1 I Assistant Principal: Brother Charles Rymarowicz, C.S.C. Directing the Way Our Principal: Brother Joseph Walter, C.S.C. As religious superior and principal of our school, Brother Joseph Walter dur- ing these past four years has exempli- fied those administrative qualities that have brought efficiency, order, and pur- pose into our daily school life. In his capacity as guide and supervisor, he has made this important step of our formative stage memorable years for all of us who have shared in these challenging experiences in our develop- ment. Mrs. Marjorie Hoffman School Secretary r? 0 •v S r A Contributors Who Help Enlighten the Way The goal of becoming an educated man is accomplished through the en- lightened way of knowledge and faith. The students and faculty are well aware of the significance of the spiritual and material support given by Father Lisewski, pastor of Holy Trinity, Father George, spiritual di- rector of the student body, and Father Buckley, chaplain to the Brothers. It is impossible to measure on a tangible scale the results that will be effected through their contri- butions and good will. REV. STANISLAUS LISEWSKI, C.S.C. Pastor of Holy Trinity REV. GEORGE SZYMANOWSKI, C.S.C. Spiritual director and director of maintenance REV. JAMES BUCKLEY, C.S.C. Brothers ' chaplain Page H A Golden Jubilee When classes resumed in September, as we students were absorbed in adjusting ourselves to the new school year ' s schedule, the faculty, along with the other members of the Congregation of Holy Cross, were commemorating a Golden Jubilee. Fifty years ago Brother Andre, C.S.C., a Brother of Holy Cross, saw the beginnings of his ambition to build a tremendous tabernacle in honor of St. Joseph, the patron saint of the Brothers. Through his deep-grounded faith and hope, he saw the realization of much of his dreams before his death in 1937. Throngs of hopeful souls from this continent journeyed to Canada to seek restored health and strengthened faith through the intercession of Brother Andre, the miracle man of Montreal whose cause for canonization is being introduced in Rome. Today, the magnificent basilica, Saint Joseph ' s Oratory on Mount Royal, towers over the city of Montreal, Canada, where countless of pilgrims con tinue to go yearly to seek strength and courage and hope. This basilica, conducted by the Fathers of Holy Cross, is on the way to becoming one of the largest churches in the Christian world. We join the faculty in commemorating this historic event. St. Joseph ' s Oratory is truly one of the rays of light for a darkened world. Page 15 (left to right) Brother Xavier, C.S.C., Brother Marcel Doleac. C.S.C. (standing). Brother Fergus. C.S.C.. Richard Piecuch, Robert Spiewak, and Raymond Wyzgoski look over some three dimensional geometrical solids which are tanglible aids in solving problems. Because students must be able to clearly express themselves, not only in writing, but also in speak- ing, public speaking plays an important role in Senior English class. As Chester Suski practices a speech which is being recorded through the efforts of Daniel Koss. Joseph Mirus listens. ■l; • Since the cultural and scientific achieve- ments of civilization are transmitted through the media of the classroom, here then lies the core of any educational sys- tem. The experience of delving into the vast storehouse of knowledge passed on from the greatest minds of all time can be fully realized under the direction of a trained and qualified instructor. Essential For Communicating the Progress of Our Age It is here in the classroom that the student is taught to put into use his higher facul- ties which should guide all his other en- deavors. Many times this process of scho- lastic development may prove trying and sometimes seemingly impossible, but it is only through this mental formation and intellectual perfection acquired in the classroom that one can attain anything worthwhile. In Freshman Algebra class students are ardently at work during an examination given by Brother Vincent. The dictionary is the student ' s best friend. E. Tudryn and S. Uko are firm believers in this fact as they put it into effect while in their English I class. Religion is an indispensable aspe:t in the training of Christian gentlemen. The Bible, which is the basis for religious truths, offers a sound means of obtaining true knowledge. In Religion I class, F. Grygiel. J. Kucienski, and R. Mitchell study the New Testament which is part of their spiritual training. Carry- ing forth into their daily life the practice of the Christian concept of charity, the students learn in their various social events to respect one another and to work in harmony toward the attainment of desired and established goals. It is through this daily social contact at religious exercises, discussion groups, clubs, publication work, re- hearsals, school performances, and on the dance floor that we can hope for an enlightened peace among all men. Page 33 School Year Begins With the Sacrifice of the Mass Top: The student body attends the opening Mass at Holy Trinity Church. Right: Father Lisewski, pastor of Holy Trinity Church, delivers the address to the students at the opening Mass. The world takes on intelligibility for us when it is viewed with the eyes of faith. The real significance of this life of faith was firmly established at our first formal school exercise — the opening Mass held at Holy Trinity Church at which time Father Lisewski de- livered an address to the student body. This was the beginning of another school year — a landmark in our careers which provided those means that would develop each of us into sound, Christian-thinking individuals. ? ' i« tin tirs Page 34 Inculcating a Religious Atmosphere Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build it. This funda- mental truth was vividly instilled into our way of thinking and acting by Father George who conducted the First Friday devotions where the students once each month put aside their studies and work in order to think more seriously about their moral obligations to God and their fellow men. Top right: F. Michalski and F. Safranek examine the Advent crib displayed during the Fresh- man-Sophomore retreat. Top left: Father George, spiritual director, talks to the student body during the First Friday devotions. Days of Retreat Shortly before the Christmas vacation the Freshmen and Sophomores spent three days of prayerful thought and considera- tion at their annual retreat. The upper- classmen had their retreat during Holy Week. It was during these retreats that each student became more keenly aware that a life that was not centered on faith as the main spring of all its activities was a life spent in darkness. Both retreats were conducted by Msgr. O ' Brien, the retreat master, who offered Mass daily in the auditorium and de- livered the conferences which brought out the practical application of Christian teaching. As an integral part of our religious forma- tion, these retreats served in preparing us for the journey that lies ahead. In Preparation for Christian Leadership Moderated by Brother Theo- philus. the Young Christian Students, a Catholic action organization, has as its pur- pose the attempt to produce an ideal Christian atmos- phere among the student body so that all students will more fully live the Christian way of life. Their objective is to bring the principles of Christianity into all the ac- tivities of our daily life. The organization is made up of three separate groups, each group carrying out its discussions and promoting its various activities. Besides at- tending the regular weekly meetings, a few of the mem- bers attended Federation meetings where they ex- changed ideas with students from other high schools throughout the city and country. Page 37 Yearbook Staff Portrays History of This School Year While the early autumn flash of the camera bulbs began capturing the mem- orable events of this past school year, the members of the staff of the Trini- tarian were ardently at work scheduling appointment dates for pictures, plan- ning initial layouts, carrying out the patron drive to finance publication, and performing the countless of other essent ial tasks that finally brought this pub- lication into being. Both the apprentice and veteran staffmen ' s journalistic qualities have been tested during the past year. Through personal experience they have learned the need of efficiency and promptness in trying to meet the printer ' s deadline. The finished product illuminates the closely united efforts and good will of the staff members, the student body, and the faculty. Only the future will deter- mine its true value when Trinity students in the years to come re-live in memory the joyful events that made this year different from all others. Written in the odd moments of the students ' time about activities of which they are the center, it cannot be a voice to disseminate news. Rather it serves as a chronicle, catch- ing on paper something of the spirit, the events, the personalities which at a given moment in time were their sole preoccupation. The values the Gold Blue has for those students who compose its staff are many. Here the student learns to assume responsibility, to give generously of his time, to work for something he feels is worthwhile. The staff members are provided with the experience in journalistic writing and the joy of seeing their own writing in print. The Gold Blue, under the direction of Brother John, has contributed a great share in helping to form unity of purpose and action among the entire student body. First, the student members provide valuable assist- ance to the faculty in making available a variety of films and audio-visual equip- ment for classroom use. Secondly, the members themselves gain valuable ex- perience in the use and care of many types of audio-visual equipment. The members become official motion picture projection- ists through a test given by the Univer- sity of Illinois during the school year. Their achievements and successes are intimately tied up with the narrative of this past school year. In the last weeks of August, several weeks prior to the opening of school, a sizable group of band members spent many hours of diligent practice preparing for the numerous events in which they would participate throughout the year. Through their enthusiastic efforts and ardent cooperation, the band again succeeded in being one of the top high school musical groups in the city by capturing second place in the Riverview Parade of Bands Contest. Besides developing individual musical talent and leadership in its members, it has added its share in helping to entertain at the various school assemblies, pep rallies and other various civic occasions throughout the year. They brought their musical talent to the cold stands of the football stadiums where the rhythmic melodies lent morale to the fighting football squad and helped the spectators to enter into the spirit of the games. The culminating performance came with their presentation of the spring concert. Their efforts and services were well rewarded this year when the Parent- Teacher Association, in their show of gratitude, generously sponsored the remodeling of the band room. Through these meetings and the various social functions of the organization, the parents and faculty gained deeper insight into the many problems connected with education. As a result of their unified efforts and their traditional enthusiastic spirit, the Parent-Teachers Association undertook the remodeling of the Band room and sponsored the Autumn Dance and the fifth annual Father and Son Banquet. From the times of the earliest civilized nations, man has consid- ered sports a necessary and most dig- nified endeavor. Today, in our modern world, we also find that life demands a constructive outlet in order that man lead a healthful and complete life. It is here on the gym floor, on the tennis court, and in the football sta- dium that this worthwhile interest is cultivated among the members of the student body. Besides provid ing re- laxation, it also strengthens that spirit which leads to a greater respect and honor of the school and the community. Page 63 Behind the Front Lines . . . What we see on the football field or on the basketball court during game time is only a part of the total picture that must be sketched to get the entire story. Into the preparations and final play for these activities go the work and man- agement of many individuals. We cannot forget the backing received from the athletic directors, coaches, publicity and managing board, the team doctor, and the cheerleaders. Their contributions have definitely aided the progress of the team. Marches Through a Pair of Victories A muddy field shadowed by a somber, overcast sky set an appropriate scene for the Trinity-Loyola contest. In the first quarter Jerry Supergan broke away for a touch- down which was called back. The Tigers were then held as Loyola scored twice before the half. A final surge in the closing minutes of the game was repelled by the Ramblers as the game ended 22-0 in favor of Loyola. Lane Tech stadium was the site of the next game as Trinity was defeated by St. George, 40-12. One of the Tigers ' touchdowns was a 60 yard run by Ted Lakomecki, a promis- ing Junior who should see plenty of action next year. In spite of the rain and cold weather, a large cheering section gathered for the tradi- tional game with Weber. Covered from head to toe with mud, the players left the field with the scoreboard reading, 18-0 in favor of Weber. This is the story. It is a story of victory and defeat, mostly defeat; but regardless of the Scoreboard ' s tally, our boys always proved themselves to be worthy representatives of Holy Trinity. They played their best at all times with the determination and spirit char- acteristic of all Trinity teams. Upper right: Lackomecki breaks away for a long gain against St. Elizabeth. Will Jaslowski Bob Norys I The objectives of a Freshman team is to instill into its members, spirit, determination, and a basic knowl- edge of football. These end results were accom- plished through the capable coaching of Mr. Wierz- bicki. After weeks of thorough practice. Captain F. Grygiel led the team through its first game with Gordon Tech. But after the Rams handed us a 33-0 defeat, our spirited Freshmen had to work harder. Excessive drilling paid off when the Tigers met the Ironmen of St. Elizabeth and edged them out by a 13-6 score. Spurred on by this victory. Holy Trinity took on the DePaul Demons. Both teams played beautiful ball, which was evident in the final tally of a 7-7 deadlock. The season ended by having the Tigers lose to St. Rita 26-0 for a season ' s record of one win, two losses, and one tie. Our Freshmen team deserves due credit for climbing this rough road with flying colors. Through the guidance of Coach Wierzbicki, these spirited young men have advanced beyond the first and most im- portant step on their way to varsity service. Pnge 70 A Beginning and a Departure Center Pat Carroll and guard Ronald Gad. small in stature but large in spirit and determination, paved the way for many long gains, opening holes in the opponent ' s line. When one of the guards needed a rest. Tom Krzak, a reliable substitute, was always on hand. Converted from end to tackle this year, Mike Mackin played his new position well throughout the season. The booming voice of Frank Storce, shout- ing words of encouragement to his teammates will long be remembered. Finally, at the end, the experi- ence of Joseph Marchewka and Richard Ozga will be hard to replace. The fans with great hope and expectation cheered as the team trounced Fenwick, 67-39, to avenge a previous 63-62 loss at the Friar ' s gym. In the pre-league session, the fans also saw the Tigers set a new school scoring record of 94 points against Waller while Mile Salzinski ' s 34 points and Joe Marchewka ' s 21 points almost matched the op- ponent ' s score. As most Tiger fans will agree, the Senior Varsity ' s record can be summed up in one word — almost. Five of our league contests were settled in the closing seconds of play with a winning margin of four points or less. DePaul got off to an early lead in the first half of the game, but in the second half, our Tigers cut the lead down to three points with seconds left in the game. Sinking two free throws, De Paul won the game by 64-59 . . . With our cagers on a scoring rampage, we went ahead and scored 83 points to the Gordon Rams ' 47. Salzinski scored 29 points, while Chuck Gazda broke the score- board capacity of 80 points. Page 72 [or a Fight-to-the-Finish Season Demonstrating: Co-captain ]. Marchewka; Managers: R. Cinal and D. JUNIOR TEAM Led by co-captains Len Pawlowski and Ed Porlier, the Junior team finished the pre-league session with a commendable record. Handicapped by the loss of three starters from the previous year. Coach Wierzbicki did an excellent job of molding the team into an efficient unit. Ted Lakomecki. high scorer in the first round of play. L. Pawlowski, E. Porlier, Bob Musolff, and Ron Topczewski made up the starting five for the team. Len Pawlowski and Ed Porlier, because of their impressive playing, were selected for the All-City team. Starting off the league session with De Paul, our team made a very encourag- ing showing. However, in the last few seconds of the game, De Paul went ahead and won the game with a free throw, making the score 51-50. The Loyola game, furnishing the fans with many breath-taking moments, brought out the superior playing on the part of the Tigers as Len Pawlowski paced Trinity to a 55-48 victory over the first place, undefeated Loyola squad. . . . Although the Juniors played heads-up ball throughout the game with St. George, we were over powered by a score of 60-53. Page 71 Their Playing Skill ... A Constant Challenge Traveling to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to play St. Mary, a team which had set a state scoring record of 134 points in one game, the Senior Tigers turned giant-killers by defeating them 79-67 and also by a score of 76-53 when they returned the visit to Chicago. Enjoying the fruits of accurate free throws, the Tigers defeated Loyola. 41-39. With only minutes left and the score tied in the game with St. George, Dick Ozga, Bob Norys, and Wally Wojcik sank 12 free throws to give the Tigers a 74-62 victory. The game with Gordon Tech brought new hope to the Tiger line-up when they tri- umphed with a score of 65-55. One of the hardest fought games of this round came when Trinity suffered heart-breaking de- feat in the last few seconds of the game with St. Elizabeth at a score of 61-59. The fans will not forget the constant threat our team displayed throughout the season. It was more than a season of wins and losses. It was a season that helped make the history of this school year, a year of happy memory. Left: Topczewski leaps high as St. Mary s player tries to block the shot. Then the Red Horde bounced back with a free throw and a tip-in-shot and tied the game, which was won by Weber in an overtime by a score of 80-79. With the score tied and less than a minute to play, the De Paul Demons sank three consecutive throws to win 58-55. After winning over Gordon Tech. 70-64, the last min- ute jinx again hit the Tigers as they lost to St. Eliza- beth 58-54 after a six point lead. The Loyola Ramblers led all the way with the Senior Tigers in hot pursuit, and the game ended 61-59, Loyola. These close contests against top contenders have given Trinity the prestige of being one of the best teams in the section. Congratulations to the team for a job well done. Their performance on the hardwood court helped to give our school two of its best cage teams in recent years. The fans will long remember the thrilling mo- ments provided by Len Pawlowski. Ed Porlier. and John Stanek in the fast-moving Junior Varsity games. Pawlowski, who has been in varsity competition for four years, serves as a shining example of what a little man can accomplish with spirit and determination. On the Senior squad six regulars will exchange their jerseys and trunks for the cap and gown. Co-Captains Joe Marchewka and Mike Salzinski. the tallest men on the squad, provided the rebounding strength for the Tigers, while Charlie Gazda, although slight in stature, was respected by the teammates and opponents alike for his accurate set shots. Bob Norys. Paul Szczurek. and Dick Ozga, alternating in the remaining positions, proved that speed and agility are just as important to the game as is height. When these boys receive their diplomas in June, they will have attained through self-sacrifice of time and energy those Christian ideals of perseverance and sportsmanship which will influence their future en- deavors.
