If these words of Henry Adams can be applied to all teachers, how much more so to religious teachers. With this thought in mind, we pen these words of dedication to three such teachers and guides of youth. Brother Maximus, C.S.C., who has served as principal for two terms, has been an active leader in our school ever since its beginning at the turn of the century. Brother Victor, C.S.C., who has served one term as prin- cipal, has also been on the faculty since the school was founded and continues with his diligent service to boys. Brother Xavier, C.S.C. has been here at Holy Trinity for the greater part of his teaching career, his time being interrupted for a few years when he taught elsewhere. In gratitude for their long, devoted services as leaders and pioneers in Education, we bestow this token of recogni- tion. Their infiuence goes on-in the molding of tomorrow's generations. we 'fm 1 , '1' i .ff u J H .5 I M, we W A if Q Foreword . . . This year, 1954, marks the twenty-fifth year of the existence of our school in the present building. From its humble beginning to the present day, it has helped to develop in youth a truly intellectual and Christian character. In 1893, the Brothers of Holy Cross, at the invitation of Father Sztuczko, C.S.C., pastor of Holy Trinity Parish, arrived in Chicago and were assigned to teach in the grade school. The first high school classes were taught seventeen years later in a converted printing shop on Noble Street with Brother Peter Hosinski, C.S.C. as its first principal. In 1912, the Kosciuszko Public School on Division and Cleaver Streets became the next step in the planning of a complete high school for boys. The Brothers taught here for fifteen years. This school was then torn down and replaced by the present modern edifice. Blessed by George Cardinal Mundelein the new school was opened in 1928. The future will present many challenges to us. If we meet these with the same ideals and unselfish effort as in the past, our school will continue to witness the growth it has shown in the years now past. Contents . . . ' 124 The site of Holy Trinity High School from 1912 to 1927 which was replaced by present school building. The School . . . The drive for a new school building was begun on March 1, 1923. During this drive, the greatest encouragement came from Cardinal Mundelein, who, in a letter to Father Sztuczko, the founder, paid high tribute to his efforts and to the movement. To regard the school as merely an edifice of stone and brick would surely be a misconception. M7110 would venture to speak as such when its walls have vibrated in the booming crescendo of pep assemblies, when they have contained the Almighty God in pious retreats, and have echoed the voices of trained educators imparting knowledge and guidance to their charges? Rather, we must regard the school with the respect due to a living institution which has molded and continues to mold the noblest of God's creation on earth. Holy Trinity High School, as in the past, fills a definite need in the religious, social, political, and economic life of American youth in Chicago. Since the school's very beginning, it has been instilling in its students the principles of Catholic education as expressed in the teachings of the Church. OPPOSITE PAGE . . . During the past twenty-five years, the enrollment of our school has increased from 275 students in 1928 to approximately 700 today. These students are representatives from parishes throughout the Chicago area. Continuing in the traditions of the past, all the religious, social, and intellectual activities and endeavors of the school are aimed at the complete development of the students who come to pursue their education and training. Unity is one of the essential factors that renders coop- erativeness and success to our student body. VV ith the guide and support of the faculty, the students have been able to accomplish the many tasks that have faced them in their high school days. It is through this training that they are prepared to take an active part in the civic and religious life of this city and country. They will follow in the footsteps of the alumni of our school in their services as priests, religious, doctors, dentists, teachers, lawyers, engineers, and musicians. Above all, their aim must be to live their lives in conformity with the Divine Plan as taught to them daily here at Holy Trinity in the atmosphere of Christian education. OPPOSITE PAGE . . . For most boys that day was the turning point in their lives. Toward the end of the first semester, elections were held for class officers. The class President was Robert Marchewkag Treasurer, john Kamysg Secretary. Daniel Sandersg and Sgt.-at-Arms, Richard Blackman. The Trinity football and basketball teams were not the best, but brighter days could be seen. The Trinity seniors upset highly favored Saint George in the last game of the basketball season. Steve .Iuzwik replaced Joe Risiley as coach. The Student Council was organized . . . 1951-1952 The more mature characteristics of Sophomores began to take shape. The Hrst privilege of participating in social activities was our Sophomore dance. Class officers were: President, Daniel Sandersg Vice-President, Ronald Heideng Treasurer, Robert Marchewka. Our football team showed signs of the long expected improvement when it beat Saint Patrick by a score of 38-19. After twenty-five years of faithful service, Mr. Brandt retired from his coaching duties. Brother Reginald completed his six year tenure as principal. The Yearbook acquired a new title . . . 1952-1953 Several juniors, realizing their higher standing in school, began to realize themselves and decided on vocations. Junior class ofhcers were nearly the same as the preceding year, with President, Daniel Sandersg Vice-President, Ronald Heideng Secretary, Donald Pilarski: Treasurer, James Ballg Sgt.-at-Arms, john Kamys. Brother Joseph Walter became Principal, Brother just the Assistant Principal. Under the skilled tutelage of Coach Steve Juzwik, the football team possessed new zest and more confidence. The team went on to beat St. Rita 19-18 and De Paul 24-13. Coach Frank Rohter succeeded Mr. Brandt as head basketball coach. The basketball teams showed a notable improvement. Science clubs were organized. A project was undertaken to build a school telescope . . 1953-1954 XVe have hnally reached the year to which we have so eagerly looked forward. But now that it is here, we are rather slow to accept it. For many of us, these four years have been periods of nourishment for our bodies and minds. VVe look forward to the future with con- fident eyes, knowing that at our assistance will always be that help of God which has been so manifest during our four years of high school. But oh! What has happened? Look at our football team. Our upper classmen will be accredited for giving to our school the most successful football season Holy Trinity has ever had: a 5-3 record. And, yes, most certainly progress is being made as in the past. Look at our new student handbook - a guide to Holy Trinity High School. The P.T.A. presented a new modern equipped bus to the school. We Seniors are leaving 1-Ioly Trinity with an impression in our minds of a school which has contributed so much in our personal development and in giving us ideals which we are to use a life time. The purpose of an educational institution is not that of producing individuals comparable to unfeeling robots, but rather, social beings whose mental composition will enable them to cope with the emotional, as well as the technical problems and intricacies of a complex world. For this reason, extracur- ricular activities, in conjunction with the standard curriculum, play a definite role in education. Social activities provide the students with an outlet for the demands of their personalities and silences the erroneous con- ception which tells them they do not belong, Participation in the various activities, such as the Student Council, Clubs, Band, and Glee Club, enables the students to discover their talents which will be invaluable assets in their later life. The religious devotions carried on by the school assist the students in setting right their hierarchy of values which ulti' mately lead to their happiness and contentment in life. The happy, the profoundly interested, the joyful faces on the following pages vividly illustrate the importance of such activities in order to better prepare them to meet the challenges of a modern world. X Z Athletics . . . Holy Trinity has always been mindful of the importance of athletic activity to fully develop its young men. The school has not only educated its students in the customary phases of de- velopment but also in the physical phase, where true sportsman- ship is cultivated by the application of Christian principles on the field of competition. In 1914, our school became a member of the Catholic league, entering into inter-scholastic competition in football and basket- ball in the north section. We have always considered it an honor to be a member of a league which has contributed so many great names to the Held of sports. Our football and basketball teams have performed proudly, gaining praise and recognition for our school and the student body. Our encouraging season records prove that what we lack in number, we make up in team spirit and determination to win. In order to provide students not participating in varsity sports an opportunity to take an active part in athletics, a complete intramural program is organized under faculty super- vision. The physical education program, as carried out in the gym classes, helps to strengthen the body, provides relaxation, instills zest for competition, and teaches the boy the necessary physical skills. The Tigers' spirit was in the air, and the school looked anxiously forward to a successful season. The season officially opened against Fenwick, and although the Tigers fought valiantly and showed their improvement over last year, we lost by a score of 26-12. The following game was also lost to St. George who proved to be one of the best teams in the Catholic league. Greatest Football Season . . . Into the coaching and playing ol' any major sport go countless hours ol' work and sweat. Mr. Mc.-Xlpin and Mr. Rohter put into this task all the strategy and skill of a good coaching team, using the most modern techniques and equipment available - including lilms of the various games which were shown to the team shortly alter the game had been played. The team displayed the courage, determination, and sportsmanship worthy ol' a Catholic school. Wle ring out our praises for a stlceessful football season to the coaches, team and the students for their support throughout the season. It went down as one ol' 'l'rinity's best. In recognition for outstanding achievement, Brother Quentin, the .Xthletic Director, gave out the following grid monograms: Seniors: Ball, Heiden, Kamys, Ketza, Marchewka, Pilarski, Schlieben, and XVOIIIX.
