This being our first year of high school work it took a little time to get accustomed to the routine. We tackled our studies with energy even though they were a bit hard. ln spite of our difficulties when lune rolled around we found ourselves rid of the x's and y's of algebra and the depressing Greeks of Ancient History. How fast time did fly! ln our Sophomore year our number increased by five. Our new mem- bers were Marion McLaughlin, Flora Perez, Helen Michalski, William Michal- ski and Leonard Wisneski. During this year Sister Helen Regina proved herself to be a true friend and advisor. We struggled with Iulius Caesar and held our heads when Mr. Henry expounded his problems of geometry. At the close of our Sophomore year we were all thrilled to become luniors and to choose our own courses. Because of this privilege our class became divided since we weren't all interested in the same subjects. Again our number increased. This time our new members were Alfred Haynes, Peggy Hughes, Roy McGeacly, and William Hunter. Mrs. Moore greatly as- sisted us in solving our problem of the senior dinner. This affair was held on lune the sixth in the school auditorium. lt was a gala occasion with speeches from the departing Seniors and dancing after the dinner. Both Seniors and Iuniors enjoyed the evening. Class dinner was given by the Iuniors to the Seniors. Prom followed with all its sweet memories. Then came Class night and last of all-the goal for which we all worked-Graduation. They were engaged in numerous activities even the school orchestra is comprised of Iuniors. The members of this class have also played a prominent part in athletics. They organized the first softball team. Iames Nelson had the highest score on the boy's basketball team and Adelaide Garlinger is captain of the gir1's basket- ball team. The scholastic record of the luniors is considered above the usual. Iohn Powers won second prize in the Latin contest and Irene Roth submitted an Alma Mater which was accepted by the entire student body. Iuniors, bright prospects for your Senior year! SOPHCMORES The Sophomore's claim to fame seems to lie mainly in the athletic field. This class defeated the Freshmen in football and baseball. They have five members on the baseball team. Frank Saul and Frank Pizza are pitchers on the baseball team. The girls of the Sophomore class defeated the girls of the Freshmen class in a softball game. There are two sophomore classes which meet once a week during home room period for class meetings. I believe these meetings are very interesting. FRESHMEN The Freshmen claim to fame covers various fields. First, the scholastic field since Alice Brown and Betty Lester entered a Latin contest at St. Aloysius' Academy, Iersey City. Athletics also seem to be a great part of their life. The girl's have a baseball team and Iohn Hordyck catches for the boy's team. The Freshmen A class is the only class to have a hundred per cent at- tendance at First Friday Communion. They also were the first to pay their propagation of the Faith Dues. This class also goes in for a bit of acting for they presented a play in home room period, Mary Comes Home From College. All phases of publication including financing, literary, photography, compositions were discussed com- pletely and intelligently. The staff is grateful for the kind assistance given by Sister Agnes Cyril and Mr. William Henry. STUDENT COUNCIL This year the Student Council was better organized than ever before. The first and most important duty of its members was to draw up a constitu- tion that would cover everything that was needed for a successful governing of the student body. After a great deal of preparation an excellent constitu- tion was presented to the School Body and was accepted. The next duty of the Student Body was to elect its officers. This was done by having the Student Council nominate the candidates who were to run for office. When this was done, there followed much strong campaigning. Then came the big day for all students to vote for the candidates whom they con- sidered capable of leading the Student Body. This was a very impressive event. All the students assembled in the auditorium and each in turn cast his ballot. The organization accomplished excellent work in government participation. TRIfHI NEWS The need for a student journal was recognized by a progressive-minded student body early in 1939 and this need crystallized in the form of a fort- nightly publication, the TRI-HI NEWS. About 25 pencil-wielding students stepped forward and proceeded to amaze and amuse the student body by turning out the first successful paper at Trinity. To date there have been eight issues and each has been better than the one before it. The TRI-HI NEWS has brought into the open heretofore hidden Writing ability and suggested to the staff members the possibilities of the journalistic profession. At times when the outlook seemed most gloomy, the firm guidance of Mr. Sehulster urged us on to greater heights. , It is the sincere hope of the staff that this publication, the result of their untiring efforts, will never topple, but will remain as one of the worthiest in- stitutions at Holy Trinity High School. STUDENT COURT These distinguished gentlemen are the Iudges of the Student Court. Each class has a representative on the bench. Cases are tried intelligently and with fairness. The student tribunal has earned the respect of the entire school. Page Thirty seven imii 5 ii it Q: ew ,- XX fs. As the year progressed the orchestra improved. The orchestra made its first appearance at the Christmas play. Since then it had rendered many auditions for the school. THE PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The Photography Club was organized for the purpose of promoting interest in photography among the students of Trinity High. ln the beginning of the year the members held a bazaar, the proceeds of which they used to buy their enlarger, and printing and developing material. This club has helped the Year Book Staff by taking full charge of all photography for the Year Book, by developing and printing films for the rest of the school, and by increasing their own knowledge and enjoyment. This club has been under the direction of Mr. William Henry, our senior teacher. Mr. Charles Roth, photographer for the Bergen Evening Record, gave this club many pointers. THE FRENCH CLUB The purpose of this club is to gain a better knowledge of the French lan- guage and customs, through singing of French songs, writing of letters, play- ing games, working puzzles, reciting poems, studying and writing menus, studying customs, and conducting meetings in French as much as possible. This club presented a comedy in French called The Way English ls Spoken which was well received by the student body. The faculty advisor is Miss Theresa Granata. THE HELP YOURSELF CLUB The Help Yourself Club is composed of the Senior girls and sponsored by Mrs. Elton Discher. It was organized this year for the purpose of improving social etiquette, charm and development of its members. Books written on these subjects have been read, discussed and studied. Much has been gleaned from the pages of these books. Iudging from the opinion of the Senior boys this club has done a good job. Ladies of the Help Yourself Club continue the good work for the modern World needs perfect ladies today. Page Thirty nine THE TRINITAHIAN 1939 SClENCE CLUB PROM COMMITTEE Alfred Haynes ........ Pres. The students being keenly interested in science with relations to every day things about us, made rapid strides in their experiments. The members of the club presented a program of demonstrative experi- ments for the entire Student Body. Edward Cosgriff, Roy McGeady, lohn Murphy, Alfred Haynes, and Charles Brown could tell you a little story about that progress. PROM COMMITTEE The Prom Committee plans to make this year's affair the best-ever in the history of Trinity. The hall will be transformed into a Country Club with ela- borate lighting and decorative effects. Leonard Wisneski is chairman of the affair. THE DRAMATIC CLUB Our Dramatic Club presented three plays this year. The first of the series The Miraculous Medal , was presented on December the twenty-first. As I result no boy or girl of our high school- would be without a miraculous medal. In February the club presented the big show-Help Yourself. It was such a success socially and financially that it should have been named- The Victory Show. May brought another and the last of our seriesh The Victim of the Seal. GLEE CLUB Under the capable direction of Miss lane Karpinski the Glee Club has secured for itself an important place in Trinity affairs. Impressive both in its extensive, yet selective membership, and in the quality of its renditions, this group has become an essential factor in providing enjoyment and entertain- ment at numerous school functions and assemblies. Trinity is proud to boast of these vocalists who have performed so well and who hold such promise for the future. g THE HONOR SOCIETY After much deliberation the scholarship committee outlined the requisites for eligibility for membership to the Honor Society. The decided requirements were as follows: General average of eighty-nine per cent or over. At least five extra-curricular points. Bill Hunter, cap- tain, was the only returning varsity player and most of the candidates were under classmen. Nevertheless, the season was a suc- cess, not as measured by the number of victories against defeats but rather by team spirit and determination and by a really remarkable improvement as the season progressed. A large schedule of twenty-six games was played which included such top- notch teams as St. Mary's of Ruther- ford and St. Ioseph's of West New York The highlight of the season was our upset of the strong Sacred Heart team of Elizabeth after having lost to them previously by twenty-two points. The team suffered its first defeat in two years of competition to Lincoln High of lersey City, but kept its usual high standard loy defeating all other opponents. The fencers seem to be following in the footsteps of their coach, Miss Madeline Dalton, who was Metropolitan Champion and National lunior Cham- pion in l937, fourth ranking woman fencer in the nation in l937 and l938, and Intercollegiate Champion in 1935. On April 25, l939, Miss Dalton qualified for the National Championship Competition, which is to be held this lune in California. - Good luck, Miss Dalton! Your team is rooting for you! After getting off to a somewhat disappointing start the team has begun to win games and to play as expected. INTRAfMURAL ECCTBALL CHAMPIONS To make up for the absence of an official school football team, the boys organized intra-mural football. The senior boys gained school supremacy by defeating the juniors and the sophomores. The hard-hitting senior backfield, composed of Hunter, Martin, White and Wisneski, behind an unbalanced line, battled the Iuniors to an lB-12 win. The Iuniors tied the score twice but were unable to stop a last minute touchdown. The champions then went on to take an easy 52-O win over the sophomores. True sportsmanship prevailed throughout, and the games were enjoyed by both the players and the student body. lNTRAfMURAL QEOCTBALL CHAMPIONS Raymond Attreed Charles Brown Edward Cosgriff Alfred Haynes William Hunter Raymond Iuppe Leonard Martin Roy McGeacly George Schinslci Thomas White Leonard Wisneslci Page F orty-six THE TRINITAHIAN 1939 f 1 mv .L .1. 1 f . .' xi A p.
