The festival features skits in French, Spanish and German. Out of the mouths of Fonzie. Johnny Carson, Dolly Parton and Superman came many tongues. A national dish from each featured language was available in the cafeteria. Our Mrs. Hoi ton believes the festival helps language students nurture their skills beyond the classroom. But she also believes non-language students benefit from the muticultural exposure. That ' s not so unusual when Holy Spirit High School biology students finish their class dissections. In fact, it ' s not very hard to find frogs riding motorcycles, surfing, playing basketball or even disco dancing. f Debbie LeCouter has her dissected frog at a slot machine. Froggy Day at Spirit Biology Leaps with Fun Terri Tally investigates the display in the library. Sr. Mary Dominic has cured the dissecting blues by her new method - Dominican Dissecting Displays. When Sr. Dominic ' s students are finished dissecting their frogs, she does not let them wash up and move on. She suggests, rather, that they take a second look at their leftovers - the frog skeleton in particular. The rest is biological art. Students bleach the skeletons and glue the joints back together. The frogs are togged in doll clothing, motorcycle outfits, disco outfits, for skiing or surfing. These miniature frog dynaramas are then displayed in the school foyer or library. These projects proved that a little art can make biology fun as well as instructive. Our thanks to Sr Dominic and her students for this year ' s fine display. .f 1980 SOCIAL Sunday 10 Monday it: Dai ' id Pfeifet 11 Tuesday 12 f ■S ' , • Mrs. Kathleen Deibert _ z STUDIES 1980 esday Thursday Friday Saturday 1 2 6 -Mr. Jamei Kjng% V 15 i4 n 16 20 n Mr. ry M(j(r;fe«0 ' l ' m 21 28 29 30 STAFF 1980 Thursday Friday Saturday 3: 1980 CAFETERIA MAINTENANCE 1980 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday IN MEMORJUM Bobby Winters The faith community at our school sadly mourned the death of one of its members, Bobby Winters, who died on January 16, 1980. Every student and faculty member was touched by Bobby ' s willingness to help and his gentleness. A gentleman in every sense of the word, Bobby will he missed by everyone who remained for extracurricular activities and who attended Friday night dances. Whenever an activity was finished, Bobby was always there ready to lend his helping hand. Our faith community thanks God that we were able to know and love Bobby! The New York price held above $600 despite a $20 drop and climbed to about $610 in late dealer trading With the Afghanistan and Iran sit- uation still tense, the market is still in a state of anxiety, said a dealer for the London brokers firm of Sharps Pixley. Asked about the drop in the London price after opening at $610 an ounce, another dealer said, A lot of small investors have had their fingers burned today The metal opened in London at $610 an ounce after a sharp spurt Thursday but dropped within minutes to $580. Analysts traced the fluctuations to worries over the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, higher oil prices and the situation m Iran. I know that Thursday ' s stampede into gold was called crazy, but it takes a brave man to say that we will not see yet another rush before very long, a broker for the London firm of Samuels Montague said. There was also speculation about a possible bullion sale by the U.S. Treas- ury, which could lower the price by increasing the world supply of gold Casino Win ATLANTIC CITY - The city ' s casi- nos won more than $30 million in December, including $1.25 million that gamblers lost at the new Park Place Casino Hotel, which opened in the last week of the year Even though only half of its tables were open for three days and half the slot machines for eight days, gam- blers lost $1,251,559 at Bally ' s $300 million casino hotel complex. For the month of December, Re- sorts International reported a win of $15,179,436 compared to $14,057,299 for the Boardwalk Regency. Both fig- ures are less than November ' s win, but officials attribute much of the reduction to a 13-day experiment which allowed professional card counters to play blackjack. The almost-exclusive focus to date in the reactor safety area has been in accident prevention. That ' s very good, but it ' s also very unbalanced, said Frank von Hippel of Princeton ' s Cen- ter for Energy and Environment Stud- ies. Three Mile Island should have taught us that we cannot completely prevent accidents, he told a news conference at a meeting of the Ameri- can Association for the Advancement of Science. (AP) - Philadelphia Coach Pat Quinn wasn ' t making any excuses, but he said the conditions were right for his Flyers ' 7- 1 National Hockey League defeat by Minnesota Monday night — a loss that ended the Flyers ' unbeaten string at 35 games. We walked right into a club that was fairly fresh and obviously well primed, said Quinn. We ' re not mak- ing excuses. We had a good effort tonight but we met a club that would not be denied. We didn ' t really care where the streak ended. I said all along that it was inevitable. There ' s a little success ... as we look back . . . as we remember. It was September. 7976, A freshman class, the very special class of ' 80, became a part of Holy Spirit High School under its level moderator, Ms. Judith C. Leitner. It was a bright, sunny day - remember? - a perfect one to start our four year march to a goal - graduation. Remember how timid and bewildered we were that first day? We would have died rather than submit to the almighty seniors. Actually, we had a right to be proud - the swimming pool ticket gag was so old that few fell for the line. It was confusing too - trying to find the right room. Of course, the upperclassmen were of little help! How many of us walked into class late with the excuse, I got lost or sat through ten minutes of one class before realizing we should have been in another. ' Remember those crazy t-shirts that blazened our class slogan. We had to wear them to the pep rallies and had to sit on the gym floor. We can hear them now, On the floor. Freshmen! On the floor. ' Oh, and the great football games. Remember how proud we were of our president, Vanessa Reale and our vice-president, Jerome Zenga. They led our faith community through Its first year finding new friends, each other and the love of God. Everyone was saddened by the death of our beloved classmate, Barry Fine, who was loved by all who knew him. His death left an empty spot in our hearts which no one would ever be able to fill. Several freshman activities went on that year. We made the best of it those we had. The play was Fiddler on the Roof whose cast was just terrific. Soon it was June and final exams were here. It was a little easier since we had mid-terms to start us off. September! Under the leadership of Mrs. Barrett, the Class of ' 80 became sophisticated sophomores (or so we thought), laughing at the puzzled freshmen. To lead us through the turbulent year, we chose Bob McDevitt as Vice-President and Michael Blee as President. This year, as the former year, had several class activities. Sports were becoming even more fun and a way of earning a letter. Many sophomores were able to work their way up to varsity sports. If not football, it was crew. Everyone who saw It will remember the cast and chorus of My Fair Lady . Fabulous is the word for their performance. April 14, 1977 was the date of our dinner dance, Day Break . The decorations were nice and all the work was done by members of our own class. Soon, It was June and exams! Our Sophomore year was over. Friends made over the past year were getting together over the summer vacation. Junior year rolled in with the guidance of our President, Seth Wenig and Vice-President, Judy Miller under the faculty leadership of Mr. Larry DiGiovarmi. This was a year of excitement. We had more activities. We started off with our Junior car wash . It was great! Most of us washed each other more than the cars. So many of us became very close fnends and realized the importance of our faith community. The climax of the year was the Junior Ring Ceremony . An event which made us all upperclassmen. Who can forget the traditional turning of the rings afterwards in the cafeteria? We celebrated the challenge of maturity and the joy of friendship. A few days after came the Junior sub sale . Having to be up at 5:00 am and at school by 6:00 am was a miracle in itself. We must have made oi ' er three thousand subs that day - loving eiery minute of It! Our faith community was knit more closely than ever. The play was Oklahoma : the cast was excellent. They enjoyed performing to an enthusiastic audience. It arrived ' Our Junior Prom was a beautiful remembrance for all who attended. Everyone had a great time dancing to the music of Idol Passion . Exams came and passed and we knew the year ended. The Class of ' 80 became Seniors. ' !! The fall of ' 79 welcomed the Class of ' 80 back with more serious thoughts on our minds - our future. There were Guidance Office visits, AP and SAT E.xams and brief trips to the Chapel. To lead us during this crucial year, we chose Chns Bryz-Gomia as President and Alfred Sacco as Vice-President with Mr. Fran Bennett as our faculty advisor. We sold poiruettias, had a Halloween Party and a Christmas Dance to help finance our Prom and Senior tnp. Our Senior tnp - January 21 to 24 - four days to remember for all who went. Lenox, Massachusettes was the place and fun was the time. The play was Carousel . The huge cast enjoyed performing before the thoroughly entertained audience. The time really began to fly. Soon our exams were taken. Then came the joy of realizing that we were going to graduate - we made it at last. Prom time again - bigger and better than ever. There was just a little sadness as we realized that this was our last prom in high school. Then, it came at last - the very pinnacle of our four years in high school - graduation! In our caps and gouns, with heads held high and eyes steady, we marched solemnly down the aisle oj Convention Hall. It was here we received our diplomas with trembling hands. When we reached up to turn the tassels, did we remember our past high school years - the years oj our faith community - the Class of ' 80. Do you remember? i FACULTY DIRECTORY Rev. Thomas E. IN MEMORJUM Barry Michael Fine Barry was a member of the Class of ' 80. He died a tragic death during his Freshman year. A member of the Crew team and other clubs, he was an active participant of the Holy Spirit Community. Barry was in every sense of the word a true friend. His presence is missed by his family and friends. - '  JF J M ♦ ■Kt-- (,i ' i i H j i W W - ' A i U P««« A. McGuigan Paul was a member of the Class of ' 83. He died in a boating accident with his father. Within the few weeks Paul was at Holy Spirit, he proved himself a friend with a joyous spirit. He was very active in his parish activities in Somers Point. His classmates will remember him always. ' U ' irt o ' D AtO vtG 0 J i N atL L- Afier months of hard work, the time has come for me to thank everyone who made this yearbook possible. Although it took a lot of hard work, time, and effort, I am grateful to have had the opportunity because I ' ve found it quite rewarding and gratifying. Having said this, one person immediately comes to mind - our moderator, Mr. Albert Monillas. I cannot thank him enough for all the support he has given to me and the staff. His concern for the outcome of the yearbook was nothing but constant and his jovial attitude made our working collaboration unforgettable. THANKS! I would now like to express my appreciation to my staff, who were always there when needed. When you ' re working on something that needs such undivided attention, as this, cooperation is the name of the game. And that ' s what they gave me — complete cooperation. To begin with, there was our one-man lay-out editor, CP Gilmore. In past years, this job has required more than just two hands. But somehow CP miraculously handled it on his own and outstandingly at that. He is responsible for the magnificent job in constructing the lay-out of the book and picking out variuos pictures. Thanks for all your help and effort. Sue DeEjtis, our Patron Manager, did a fine job. She was in charge of gathering from the students the patrons in this yearbook. This takes a lot of patience and time and no one could have done it better. Thanks for helping out! Senior memories and Senior Poll were handled by Tracy Pettit and Rita McGurk. This job required proofreading about 395 memories and counting the votes for senior poll. I couldn ' t have chosen two people more capable of handling such a responsibility as Tracy and Rita. Thanks to both of you! Many thanks go to the Business Staff, who have taken care of circulating this yearbook and making it a selling success. Also, thanks to all photographers who have helped in contributing their time and work to our yearbook. I would like to extend that thanks to three special photographers who were always there to lend a lense whenever needed - Terry Tully, Chuck Hay den, and Todd Bolich. What ' s a yearbook without pictures?!! Next, I would like to express my thanks to Abe Orlick and Davor Studios for providing us with magnificent Senior Pictures, homeroom pictures, sports, etc . . . You too have made this Yearbook memorable, and for this we thank you. Thanks go out to Sr. Joyce and Sr. Loretta for the extra hand. Also, to anyone else who has helped me and my staff in making this yearbook a reality. At first, I must admit it seemed like an impossible task, but as I realize I enjoyed it and find it hard to see it all come to an end. Before saying good-bye, I would like to extend my personal thanks to the Senior Class. Without them this yearbook would be meaningless. Thank you for your cooperation and support. We lived four years with our faith community and God ' s guidance keeping us together. This yearbook is to help us go on, in years to come, with memories that my staff and I are giving to you if this yearbook.
