For years we have been sheltered, hidden from the turmoil and wickedness of the world. By the tireless labor of the good Priests, Sisters and our own Parents we have been protected from the storms of life. Now we suddenly find ourselves torn from this placid pool, as it were, and thrown into the raging sea that is the world. To some extent we can see what forces we must combat, and we know that in a generation such as ours, with strife and trouble preva- lent, it is possible to be saved only through prayer and devotion to God. It is our desire to remain united in this cause. Throughout our school life, we have been taught the value of coordination. The Sisters and Priests, from long experience, knew we would have need of such training and gave us the foundation for this all-important work. At home, in the family circle, in our games, in association with classmates, in all ways, at every turn we meet with the need ofiunity. To all those who have had influence over us goes our deepest, most heartfelt thanks for their training. V , In keeping, therefore, with our petition we dedicate our 1942 annual to the Most Blessed Trinity. To the most powerful Union in creation, the deepest Mystery of dur faith, we inscribe this Spot- light in token of our loyalty, and fondly hope that it, together with all our work, may receive the greatest possible blessings. i r 4 2 'A .Nz QQ J 2 ' QP S W KP 3 f -.lv A . If I ll IIII11 3.4 9 The extra-curricular activities which are reviewed in the following pages have been crowned with marked success in most instances. To some the answer may appear to be cooperation. And they are partly right. The complete formula, however, is in the preparation accom- plished before setting out in any field. We are ever mindful of our weaknesses. We know the complications and obstacles that will hinder our progreess. But we knbw also how to pray. An idea is scarcely conceived 5 a project never begun until the help of our Heavenly Father has been asked. Onlyithrough His help are we assured of ultimate victory. Unity strengthens but prayer confirms. ,fm 1 S Azz A I f M I ' 1 XM Wx XV INTRODUCING THE STAFF 'iIll1ri1'l1y1 llc!! In ri.: 5 '. .I x 1,111 I Nluuluu I I Immlly, XI. XII Ilumutt, KI. L. A M Q-1 ,,, lr Wifi fftvfyu Q' , Hi-'QXA-, M WITH THE HOOPSTERS 'Enjoying more success than any of the teams, the basketball squad is deserving of all the praise it has received, and more. With only four men from last year's team returning, Coach Larry Cicero's hard work had some fine results. The first engagement, with the Alumni, resulted in a 29-25 victory for the boys. That's starting off on the right foot. By way of keeping their record clean, the Spirits next submerged Woodbine High Chomej by a 32 to 6 count. The first defeat was not far away, however. Uponjourneying to Egg Harbor they were placed on the short end of a 26-16 score. This smirch on their record only goaded the home boys on, however, and the next game with Gloucester was more successful. A real hair-raiser, the regulation game ended in a 19-19 deadlock. An overtime period only thickened matters when each team came through with two points. A sudden death period was tirminated by a field goal which resulted from some fine team work. Final: Z3-21 four favor, o course . Still riding the crest, the boys next met and downed Hammonton High Chomeb, 23 to ll. From here the season looks good. The traveling jinx again struck when the team went to Pleasantville. Leading by 5 points going into the last period, they lost out because of a splurge which put Pleasantville ahead and resulted in a 32-28 defeat. The next game was with the soldier boys from Fort Dix fhomej. Another close game, and again the Spirits showed their mettle by a 22 to 18 victory. Tuckerton High was the next opponent fawayl, and they succeeded in placing the Blue and Gold on the skids with a 32-29 tally. Wildwood High was next and plastered us with a 39-29 defeat. Things went from bad to worse. The Y. M. C. A. Rainbows made three straight losses with a 27-19 score The final defeat in this unhappy stretch was inflicted by Egg Harbor, who swept their Series with us by a 29 to 27 total. The team finally came out of the tail-spin with a 30-26 triumph over Gloucester High, who proved an easier mark than earlier in the season fhomeb. The Alumni made it even by taking an overtime decision, 30-29, and the Rainbows upheld their mastery by planting a 33-20 beating on our pride and joy. Tiring of losses, the boys decided to go on a winning streak and started with a 37-22 victory over Sacred Heart High fawayj. Overtime periods seemed the craze this year, so in the very next game the team went to this extreme in settling matters with Pleasantville High to the tune of 33-28 fhomel. Still on the winning side, the locals went on a spree and scuttled Hammonton High, 46-31, to keep their record against that team clean. ' The final game of the season, against Sacred Heart, closed the schedule in the correct manner. This game topped a four-game winning streak, and brought the seasonal total to ll wins and 8 losses. The score, 38-28. Outstanding on this year's squad was a small pack of dynamite, Frank fRatterJ Reed. His feat of scoring 24 points in the second game against Hammonton High stands out as the high- light of the season. Running close behind were Frankie Brosky's after-the-game-foul-shot, which tied the score in the second game with Pleasantville, and Yohnny Brown's extra period field goal, which defeated Gloucester the first time. Constant stars on this season's aggregation were Joe Mullen, Duke Dwyer and George Wolf. They were ably supported by Seniors Jack Sankey, Sonney O'Keefe and Larry Flannelly. Two Juniors also contributed in the victories, the aforementioned Brown and Bill Daily. As he is only a sophomore, Frank Brosky will make opponents of Holy Spirit conscious of his presence for a couple of years. Q 5 E if Q EK A 3 E 1 K' 7 X kk -F 'E lt was said that appreciation is one of the chief components of a successful person. It is not, however, a selfish desire for achievement that prompts this expression of gratitude. To the Sisters of Mercy whose guidance and patience have been the driving forces behind the staff, to the advertisers, to all who have assisted in composition, publi- cation and preservation of our year book we offer most profound thanks. y The sand has now run out. The last moments have slipped away, and only memories remain. It is our prayer that the learning which we have received here through the countless sacrifices of parents and faculty shall 11ot be wasted. That it should be a comfort through the trials that will beset us, and a pilot! to an everlasting reward with our Creator. p A helping hand, refused, may change about and cause us pain. The Light of Truth, misused, may turn to Everlasting Flame. l l I ll P j , szj E X If N X Sm?
