47 ' 'S 2 1 M V, ...Q ,, ,nx- N -MM' ' BASEBALL Throughout the State in all baseball circles the name Menard stands out as a symbol of achievement. ln the past decade, Menard has been to the state playoffs more times than any other team. Keeping with that tradition, the Eagles posted a 9 win and 4 loss record, including a four game winning streak which made it possible for them to return to the playoffs. After winning their first four games, the Eagles dropped their next game to Peabody Warhorses, who eventually won the district championship. The Eagles next lost to a strong lena team. They then went on to win five out of their next seven games and then went on to the playoffs, only to lose 4-2 to Eunice. Wayne Mathews and Barry Hilton proved to be the big bats which kept the Eagles going strong. Mathews, who was chosen as the lst string All District pitcher, posting a 4-1 record, led the team with a ,512 percent batting average, Barry Hilton, who was an All District outfielder, hit right at .427 average for the year. Brent Mathews, a utility outfielder, had a batting average of 385. The sharp defense of Mike Byrnes, Steven Reed, Ronnie Laborde, james Colvin, Greg Gravel, and Phillip Paar provided the needed protection from the opposition. Next year the Eagles will return 6 starters and 9 lettermen to the team.
