Q! 14 0 3 oo 7 I '94 'C s? 8 Winning is not everything it is the onbf thing. Winning is a habit, but unfortunatebf so is losing. Vince Lombardi superjocks HIGHLIGHTS As the 1973 season approached, Coach Billy Horn's Eagles were faced with perhaps the toughest schedule in the 3-AAA district. Taking this into consideration, the Cenla sports writers picked the Eagles to be the spoilers of the district. lt was true that the Eagles had size and speed, but depth was a vital ingredient that was missing. On September 3rd, the Eagles would be put to their first test. They faced a tough cross-town rival, the A. S. H. Trojans. The Eagles proved themselves to be fierce competitors by defeating the Trojans 8- 7 on a thrilling extra point pass from Wayne Mathews to Greg Gravel with 3 seconds left. The Eagles drop- ped their season opener to another cross-town rival, the Bolton Bears. An injury to quarterback Wayne Mathews in that game proved to be an important factor in the two upcoming games, both against district rivals. We were set back by the jena Giants and Leesville, but pounced back on the Tioga Indians, defeating them 12-0. After losing to the Trojans, the Eagles traveled to Demon Stadium, home of the Natchitoches Chiefs. The Chiefs were ranked first in the district and second in the state and were highly favored to win. Late in the first quarter, a fake punt turned into a touchdown by Greg Gravel and the Eagles left the stadium after holding the Chiefs to only 104 yards total offense for the game. Superb defense by freshman Eric Sau- cier, juniors Dee Methvin and Gene Matassa, seniors Chuck Wale, David Walker, and Mike Byrnes, proved to make the difference. The physically exhausted Eagles then dropped their next two games to Winnfield and Peabody, but took out their anxieties on the Oakdale Warriors. The Eagles rolled up 389 yards total offense and ran up 39 points to their opponents' 6. ln the final game of the year, against the Pineville River Rats, the aggressive blocking of Lee Simmons and Robert jones made way for Wayne Carlino and Eric Sau- cier who rushed for 163 yards and 107 yards respectively. A last minute pass to the district's leading receiver Ronnie Laborde, gave the Eagles 6 points and a 20-16 victory over the Rats. Wayne Mathews was placed on the first squad all-district football team and was chosen as the district's most valuable back. Ronnie Laborde accompanied him at first string all district tight end. Wayne Carlino, Greg Gravel, Paul Hebert, Chuck Wale, and Mike Burnes were chosen on the district's second team and Dee Methvin and Eric Saucier received honorable mentions. The Eagles are looking forward to a prosperous year next year in district 2-AA. They will have 18 lettermen returning with excessive strength in both offense and defense. :w if . Although outsized by each district opponent, the Menard Eagles' Basketball team held their own in this past season. The Eagle team had to face many opponents. Among those were inju- ries, grades, and the pains of rebuilding. For the men from Menard it was not an easy season. After the loss of starting guard Tabb Neblett in the early season, things looked dismal. But the basketball players ptft aside their own problems and set out to defeat their district rivals. Dee Bubbaf' Methvin led the team in two depart- ments. He ended his junior year with 476 points and 425 rebounds. As a result of his hard work, he was named to the second team all-district team. Ned Voelker, our senior guard, rounded out the season with 147 points, but led the team in assists with a total of 64. Wayne Mathews, another junior, scored 323 points and pulled down 118 rebounds. Head Coach, jerry Lave- sphere, and assistant Don Boniol expect to have a strong group of returnees next year. Among these are letterman Tabb Neblett, Wayne Mathews, Dee Methvin, Phillip Parr, David Dufour, and Chris Randall. Also expected to contribute heavily to next year's success are jamie Colvin, Stephen Reed, and Tim Walker. These boys played most of the season with the junior Varsity and saw limited varsity action. All in all, it looks like a bright future for the Eagles next year. fi 1 MJ Bottom jamie Colvin Grady Brame Andre Bonnette Stephen Reed, Earl Cotton, and Chris Randall. Keeping with that tradition, the Eagles posted a 9 win and 4 loss record, including a four game winning streak which made it possible for them to return to the playoffs. After winning their first four games, the Eagles dropped their next game to Peabody Warhorses, who eventually won the district championship. The Eagles next lost to a strong lena team. They then went on to win five out of their next seven games and then went on to the playoffs, only to lose 4-2 to Eunice. Wayne Mathews and Barry Hilton proved to be the big bats which kept the Eagles going strong. Mathews, who was chosen as the lst string All District pitcher, posting a 4-1 record, led the team with a ,512 percent batting average, Barry Hilton, who was an All District outfielder, hit right at .427 average for the year. Brent Mathews, a utility outfielder, had a batting average of 385. The sharp defense of Mike Byrnes, Steven Reed, Ronnie Laborde, james Colvin, Greg Gravel, and Phillip Paar provided the needed protection from the opposition. Next year the Eagles will return 6 starters and 9 lettermen to the team. A O bit. Left to Right: B. Hilton, G. Gravel, R. Laborde, M, Byrnes, D. Walker, W. Mathews, I. Mathews, W. Carlino, B. The Eagles participated in nine tournaments and came out on top in two of them, The Menard Invi- tational, and A. S. H. Invitational. The Eagle swingers also had four 2nd place, two 3rd place, and one 4th place finish. The team of Tabb Neblett, Robert Polk, Tommy Coughlin, Grady Brame, and George LaHood then pro- ceeded to the regional tournament where they finished Znd. Neblett, who was the school medalist for the second straight year, shot an 81 and a 79 to end up with a two over par 160 for 36 holes. At the State tourna- ment in Shreveport, Neblett pulled through with a 154, which was good enough for 8th place.
