Results Track came to life as a major sport at Menard in 1969. After years of diligent struggle, the hard work paid off in thrill victories at meet after meet. Almost every member scored points at some time duringxthe season. At the Oakdale track meet, Menard finished third place overall, scoring 70V2 points-the highest total in memory for an Eagle team. That meet re- sulted with six MHS first place finishes along with twelve second place awards. J. D. Melton was the representative of the un- tiring runners who worked to bring pride to Menard. He reached his peak in the District 3AA meet in Leesville, running the half-mile in the excellent time of 2:05. He received the Coachis Award, the highest honor given to a Menardian trackman, for his great efforts. Also placing in the District meet was Mike Blank, winning second in the javelin with a 179'8 throw. He then went to compete in the Class AA Regional Meet. Through the coaching of Mr. Johnny Jeans, other team members became standouts. Greg Baker, also in t.he javelin event, Bobby Vandersypen, in the shot put and the discusg Richard Duncan, in the broad jump and the triple jump, Geoffery Cazes and George Tullier, in the relaysg Cazes and Ron- nie Baron, in the low hurdles, Lester Edwards, in the 4-40 dashg and Randy Mathews and Terry Andries, in the mile run. Mike Bell excelled in the 100-yard and 220-yard dashes, running the 220 in 24.1 seconds. It was truly a satisfying year for the Eagle cin- dermeng an example of how dedication can bring fruitful results. Even though we are not state win- ners, the Menard Track Team took a long stride in that direction in 1969. X Ending the -season with a 179'8 throw is Mike Blank. 4 . Yet Bonneau was not the lone star, Junior Ken Gorsha made excellent showings in the matches with Bolton, Natchitoches, and the Air Base team. Billy Hamilton and Jerry Distefano had consistently fine rounds in tournament competition and completed the four-man regular squad. The future looks very bright with Robert Neblett and David Doiron, both experienced tournament golfers, ready to prove their ability.
