When the total learning enterprise is driven for- ward by compelling belief in man's need for the radical love of the crucified Christ then it must turn this love to use in active assaults upon human misery. If it contributes only its good wishes, then the college is less than Christian. A college by its charter is dedicated to service. Its leadership has to guard itself from squandering its limited powers on secondary purposes, however worthy. But there are significant dimensions of the problem complex now facing the nation - of urban ghettos, obscene poverty, and minority rights - that are educa- tional in the strictest sense, and to these a community of scholars and learners might legitimately address itself, if it so willed. It, alone, cannot solve the entire problem but it can make its own unique contribution. Over and above the practical achievement stands the will to act - a symbol of acceptance of free men's re- sponsibility for the well-being of their society. Service, no less than scholarly study, should be a joint work of the entire collegiate community. Sister Mary Ambrose Deverux President Admini tration Sist-er Mary Baptista Dean, M.S.
