The aim of the social studies department is to pre- sent each student with a knowledge of man, his history, and his culture. With the attainment of a Christian viewpoint of history and current events, the student is prepared to accept his responsibility as an active mem- ber of the adult society. A Civics-Sociology discussion about Communism teaches the seniors how to appreciate and maintain our own systems. V Egyptian gods and goddesses visit an Ancient History class and 3 explain the roles they play in World civilization. Dorothy Deans and Pat Memoli describe the newly formed Federation of Malaysia to a United States History class. Kathy and Martha calculate heat effects. Nancy contemplates a new biological specimen. In an age of scientific discovery, sci- ence is a matter of national concern, for America needs it now more than ever before. Science is a pivot around which the forces that compose our world revolve. A science course in high school is a support for higher education, and in the hands of those who seek a higher education the future of America rests. Along with the new science age and its developments come Carla and Priscilla show their prowess in advanced math, a vital need for math. General math, Algebra I and II, geometry, and advanced math are all valuable classes contributing to the personal knowledge of every girl attending Holy Names.

O The business world needs efficient and respon- sible secretaries and clerical workers to keep offices running smoothly. The business department is where such future secretaries receive this training. Steno I and typing provide the fundamentals in letter placement and dictation. Steno II and transcription give the girls a chance to practice and perfect their skills, thus enabling them to achieve their goal as competent and well-trained secretaries. Office and Clerical Practice give the girls a chance to function in an oflice-type situation. Though the challenges are many and varied, Holy Names has a reputation for sending out into the business world well-trained secretaries. In Transcription the girls combine their typing and shorthand skills. -hi-l Anna Maiolini and Elaine Diridoni ROSE Marv Muffy Judy Schmalek and Karen Casazza Through practical experience in operating vari- ous olfice machines, these girls become better acquainted with the work they will soon be doing.
