Iish, Latin. Sister M. Regina Ann, Superior Principal Religion. God calls you to an apostolate. You are Religious . . . who will carry afar the glory of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. In 1844, after many months of prayer and serious contemplation, Eulalie Durocher, with the aid of Melodie Dufresne and Henriette Cere, founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, based on the rules and habit of a French religious com- munity. At the suggestion of Bishop Ignace Bourgat of Mon- treal, the three girls began their religious life in a little stone schoolhouse in Longueuil, Canada, on October 28, 1843. The following year, on December 8, they pro- nounced their vows, and Eulalie received the oflicial title Mother Marie Rose. I I I Sister M. Within a few years after the death of Mother Marie Rose, her Sisters ful- filled a life-long ambition, and missions were opened in New York, California, Florida, Oregon, and in the Provinces of Windsor and Manitoba, Canada, all func- tioning from and through the Mother House at Outre- mont, Montreal. Over the years, the community has fur- ther advanced to include novitiates in Oregon, Califor- nia, New York, and Basutoland, South Africa, and' schools in twelve of the fifty States, three Canadian Provinces, South Africa, and Latin America. The first Sisters, however, left for Basutoland only in 1931. It was at this time that a group also left for Japan.
