Frances Moran, '40, To the many chaplains throughout the world who are so valiantly pro- tecting the spiritual life of our boys in uniform, to the innumerable works of mercy which they are performing on far-flung battlefields, to the ideals which they uphold midst the horrors of war, we proudly dedicate this, the fifth memoir of our Years together. May God in His beautiful clemency, through the intercession of His Mother, the Immaculate Queen of Peace, the patron of our Manakata, aid these military Apostles of Christ in their overwhelming task of leading fighting souls to their ultimate glory. Where parents do t their sacred responsi- eir full duty, the cells that constitute the social body are sound, and consequently society itself, the state, is sound and reacts for the welfare of cull the individuals and groups that compose it. There is no real substitute for the Christian home, iust as there is no substitute for Christian education. And Christian education is possible only when the Christian home and the Christian school the other. Christian education alone can produce essential for walking righteously before God and rising generation receives that all-important train co-operate, each with the character that is men. To see that the ng is a responsibility that rests squarely upon parents, a responsibility that can be shifted to no one else. Great and wonderful is the dignity of parenthood, and corre- spondingly great are its responsibilities. , Excerpt from the Official letter His Excellency, Most Reverend Bishop of Spokane, February i of Charles D. And the rain fell, and the floods came, andthe winds blew and beat against that house, but it did not fall, because it was founded on rock. - Matt. VII, 24-26. It is the hope and prayer of every member of the Faculty that the grad- uates of '44 may exemplify the Master's teaching preceding these, His words. Thus the structure of their lives will stand secure and strong through these uncertain times reaching their fulfillment under the standard of Jesus and Mary. Pagcfive Page :ix CIVILIAN DEFENSE Holy Names students have been eager to do th of the Free this year as always. Under the able classes entered wholeheartedly into the nation-wid ir part for The Land uidance of Tri-A, the paper drive. Above the girls are shown loading their Hrst week collection. Five tons in five days was the caption used by me Spolcesmc ture which appeared on its front page. Our Bond Drive was a great success with eacl than full quota. However efforts found most effective and perl Academy Spiritual Defense Corps, an organization v is prayer combined with good works offered DAILY ln-Review for this pic- i class reaching more ect expression in the fhose forceful weapon that God's grace may flow in abundance onthe apostolic work of our chaplains among the boys in battle, camp or hospital. THE RED CROSS The face of War is Terrible For human eyes to see: lt takes its toll, unbearable, ln high mortality. While man must leave his loved to tight On battlefields of stress, lt is the woman's harder part To bear the loneliness, And yet it is the woman's part To keep the homefires warrn. He also serves who - waits. A bright Red Cross upon her arm. Winnona Ellerton Early in the school year we enrolled in the Junior American Red Cross and have readily responded to their requests for aid by contributing atghans, hospital tray favors tor Christmas, Valentines, and St. Patrick's day, ket bags, pillow slips, hot water bag covers, cartoon books, and classic novels. Not the least of our undertakings was the collection of approximately 2,000 coat hangers which were sent to Baxter General Hos- pital. Five hundred inspiring holy pictures have been mounted and dis- tributed among the boys in the service. Encouraged by our success in this organization and the knowledge that we are assisting in the war effort many of us hope to continue in this admirable work. Page :even 7 Page sigh! Good afternoon ladies! lt's Maxwell house toffee time and we bring you those two wandering re- porters with the news you have been waiting for. It is a beautiful day, isn't it, ladies? Yes, a beautiful, hot day in July, l954, and we've been busy finding the news you want. We've had some real luck and a few good scoops. Yesterday we were privileged to visit with Aileen Boutin. You will remember her as the girl who used to collect phono- graph records. Well, she is still listening to her Master-son's voice . . . l ! With her that afternoon we were lucky enough to Rnd Marian Buckley, who, contrary to her previous Buckley disposition, has become Moody of late, but in spite of the fa ct, she is a Budding beauty. Marian informed us that the better half the Buckley's - Alice, and her old school chums, Arlene Manning and Mary Po- tesky, have just witnessed the opening of their new Night Spot, the Dishin' Mary - Arlene import- ed from Hillyard as head cashier, Mary Gallagher. The customers say that Mary is really an even Steven business woman. ln prospects of catching some of our old friends there, we hustled over and we were fortunate enough to see such famous characters there as Katherine Groo, who has recently risen to the heights of glory by perfecting a new spaghetti- quite an art for Kathy! ! Sitting across from her we were not too surprised to find Patt Green - now a charming little housewife. She has recently had her hair Bobbed - Rally she has . . . Suddenly our attention was divefted by a fanfare announcing the floor show. Much to our surprise we recognized the Master of Ceremonies as Frances Mauro, whose loud, jovial voice introducedfa sensational feat. lt seemed that Eileen Medved and Helen Milla were diving 500 feet through the air into a damp rag. We stood watching, amazed when a terrible dis- aster occurred. After thorough examination by Chief Bridget Sherlock Holmes and her detectives, Marian Temple, Julia Falsetto and Phyllis Dashiell, it was revealed that virtuoso Betty Jane Johnson, in a tit of jealousy, had wrung out the rag because her violin tour was cancelled in favor of the act. As soon as the excitement died down, who should come in the door but Mary Lou Kimmel, who was just discharged from the House of David Baseball team. Following close behind her came Eva Malek, Beth Dirkes, Jean Kalez and Ramona Stengar, in very high spirits for they had just won a basketball game. They are members of Hoy's Hotball Basketball team - it seems that Manager Hoy, in the interest of her players, took to chopping off the opponents' thumbs when they reached too eagerly for the ball. The game was a real thriller, the floor was so slippery they could hardly keep on their feet. The gym owner, Eva Conrad, had purchased the wax from that super sales woman Blanche Kaufman of the Wilcox Wax Company - for every ten cans she sells, Blanche receives a Blue Jay. A A large bus rumbled by the door and we glanced up to see a familiar face at the wheel, it was Ann Orndorff- she says she would rather drive a Buzz than Walker way around town. Seated directly behind her were Nancy Smith and Frances Delaney. Frances has recently been employed by the Thompson's Rug Cleaners as a thumper. Who should be sitting on the back bumper but Mary B. Owens, who, incidentally, is now a famous Lion Tamer. No doubt you have heard of Charlie the Lion, well, she has tamed him and has he settled down! Having turned back to our table, we were surprised to hear a singing paper girl. Anxious to see the latest news we called her over to find that it was Jenny Rotunno bringing in the latest scoops written by that ace reporter, Colleen Johansen, working now for Editor Rosemary Wieman's paper, The Bugle Call Rag. The blazing red headlines revealed that a Scientist, namely Rosanne O'Brien, has gone completely mad trying to find a substitute for people. lncidentally, she found it- you'd go mad, too. After being 'diagnosed by Dr. Ann Gillespy of the Davenport hospital, she has been put under the able care of Nurses Devlin, Wynne, Dube, Cutz, and the patient's loving sister, Lorainne. We feel that she is well on her way. V Glancing through the theatre ads we see featured there the Golwen Follies of l954, starring that ballet queen, Helen Dillon. The name of the show is Pars and Starters, known in continental France as Stars and More Stars. She is being presented at the Morphium Theatre under the able man- agement of Patricia Courser, and when there is only one thing to be done - she does it. F ln this- extreme left-hand corner we find an advertisement, the Girnus Furnace Factory is having a ire sa e. Turning to the society column we read that Antonia and husband of the McCafferties are cele- fContinued on Page ABQ Page jffleen Four bright years together Crowned by glory, fame, and more, Aided by Our Lady ot Lourdes The Class of '44. TRI-A The Tri-A Club of l944 can proudly look back upon a year of great accomplishments and success. Frances Devlin was the capable leader ot our numerous activities and with the combinerl efforts of all TriYA members, new standards were set that will be hard to exceed. One of the most important encounterments this ycar was the editing of Tri-Angles, our news sheet through which our alumna and friends were in- formed about the doings of Holy Names. Our first attempt at journalism met with enthusiastic encouragement due to the unselfish devotion of our Editor- in-Chief, Kaye Codd, and her staff assistants, Dolores Wernette and Mary Frances Thompson, who carried on untiringly even during the absence of i Tri-A Officers: Ramona Stenger, Frances Devil' OUY Phvsiwl Edvwfion Dlfeclfesss EVO Conrad. All in all, our ambitions were completely fulfilled when at the end of our paper drive we realized the total amount for the purchase of a moving picture projector to be installed as soon as possible. Personal holiness has been the main obiective since it is the means to reach our ultimate goal W heaven, and because we cannot hope to inspire virtue in others if vve do not possess it. Frequent and fervent visits to the Eucharistic King, efforts to make mental prayer, study and dis- cussion of our Holy Faith have been some sources from which we have sought G-od's grace. Each student has contributed to the propagation of the Faith and worked tirelessly in secur- ing subscriptions to the Catholic literature not only during the very successful Catholic Press month but throughout the entire year. One of the highlights of the year was our assembly to honor His Holiness Pope Pius XII, and the presentation ofa Papal flag to the student body by the Freshmen classes. Our most valued accomplishment was the organization of the Academy Spiritual Defense Corps, the aim of which is to offer prayer and sacrifice to obtain abundant grace for our chap- lains in their zeal for souls. A, spirit of 1943-44 has been the best ever. This exceptional attitude is due in no small measure to the up- right character and inspiring leadership of our Student Body President, Kaye Codd, who has lived the principles she has voiced. One of our first activities was the organization of the Junior Red Cross after the visit of Mrs. Manchester and Mrs. Wright in October. We know the satisfaction which was ours as each of the many proiects for bringing comfort to our boys in the camps or hospitals was completed. What a great success was our War Bond Drive both in the grand total for the school and the hundred per cent and more of each class. Our school year was highlighted by the visit of Mother General and Mother Mary Eleanore and punctuated by the many-enjoyable mixers and entertainments given for our Manakata. The dramatic talents of our classmates were proved in the Christmas tableau, the Rosary and Book Week and Voca- tion plays, and of course, the many skits presented throughout the year. Undoubtedly the past year has been a most profitable one, and we wish to thank the faculty for all their generous help, and the students for their wholeihearted cooperation.
