WASHINGTON , , , THE MAGIC WORD EVOKES A thousand ideas. It is a symbol of intrepid valor of the Christian Knight, it is the powerful weapon which enables him to carry off the victory in the tournament of life, it is unblenching courage and unfailing conviction. OUR FOUR YEARS AT HOLY NAMES HAVE BEEN THE training period . . . the apprenticeship in the use of this sword of the spirit. Graduation will be the long awaited sign of the order of knighthood. We must disperse on our various quests, and like King Arthur's knights, we must travel the length and breadth of the land in our search. With EXCALIBUR shining and sharp-edged in our grasp, each of us must do battle with ignorance, fear, oppression, and injustice. We must remember the vows we pronounced, in spite of every difficulty we must follow wherever the King may lead us, if we have confidence we cannot fail. EXCALIBUR IS THE FIGURE OF THE IDEALS WE HAVE been given and the traditions we have been taught at HOLY NAMES. That is the explanation of the name of our year book, and also of our theme for this year. ELAINE RYANfEDITOR tb ree Jim' ADMINISTRATION AND FACU SISTER M. ELIZABETH CLARE, Superior SISTER M. And these Were marshalled in their drill by Sister jean Cecile and Sister Mary james and by Good Sister Peter Mary. Leading them in all Their fun were Donna Berens, Maudie, she Of Oeser,.and Patricia Griffin. Pat McCullough, Kathleen Brandmeir, and Elaine The Ryan molded them in holiness. November came and pages all did don Insignia of Sodalists. Then swift The days did fly until mid-year when jousts Were held and four did honorably deserve The prizes. March did shine upon the held At Garrigan when forth Cadets did go In tournament of baskets, but alas! 'Twas stoutly played, but Comets won the game. In farces the pages did excel, for Maude And Mary Lou, the Wyse, did play Return Of Martha and Dolly well. The summer passed. And then as Sophomores the pages did Return 'neath banner red and white, To bear again the tasks of learning set By Sister Miriam Carmel, Sister Francel- La Mary, Sister Marian Josephine. Elected from their fellows, Mary Ann The Sullivan, Joanne Tranel, .and last, Our Donna Berens planned the business That fell to the Cadets, while Mary joan O'Connell, Kathleen Brandmeir, Teresa Wil- Son were Consultors for Our Lady's Knights. The year was one of growth . . . recitals showed The pages' skill in music. Drills and jousts Grew e'er more difficult. Approaching now The state of squirehood, Donna Berens and Elaine Did win the right of voice in council. Kay And Terry did become high oiiicers In the Sodality. September came And all new squires did choose Cbeneath the care Of Sister Constance Clare and Sister Adele Maureen and Sister Clarisse Mariel as chiefs, Patricia Griffin, Betty Kiley and Estelle Champoux. To Christ through Mary they Were led by Mary Pleumer, Marilyn Of Gibbons, and by Mary Lou, the Wyse. With victory at S.C., gym, Apol- Ogetics Ryan won, and fantasy By Masqueraders quickly passed the time. Awaiting spurs, the squires now stand, now pause, Remembering their Hnal year. Elaine The Ryan, Kay Brandmeir, and Muggs LaCross Did lead the squires. Consultors three were Sue Of Conroy, Margie jones, and Barbara The Rogstad. Sister Tharsilla, Sister Is- Idorita, Sister Esther Mary now Have escorted them to knighthood's door, While Patty Frane and Nancy Williams and That Marilyn of Gibbons did urge on - With cheers the team to victory in volleyball. More plays, more speeches, and more Domes did pile Their glory to the skies. Looking on are Catherine Donahue, Phyllis Shull, Mary Helen Lewis, Carole Etchey, Maureen Weston and jac- qulyn Wadeson. Members of the typing class practice increasing skill, speed and accuracy. Say Ah-h-h-! command Home Nursing student Catherine Daly as she expertly inspects Susan Sylver- ter's tonsils while Catherine Donahue holds Raymond as he awaits his turn. Dorothy McBurney, Patricia Snider, Mary Katherine Aamodt thirty-fbzzr CLASS CONSULTORS are a very important part of a smoothly running Sodality. They see that the activities of the sodality reach every girl. To encourage competition the Sodality offers an award to the winning class. The Sodality banner is usually the prize. It is hung in each of the winning class home rooms until the next contest. The captains of the Sodality committee grouped around the banner are Mary Ann Sullivan, Pub- licityg Marie Henderson, Missiong Loretta Ellis, Parishg Beverly Madden, Our Lady's Committeegjoanne Breuer, CatholicTruth, and Patricia Ahair frzbrentj, Eucharistic Committee captain. Suzanne Conroy, Barbara Rogstad, Margaret jones UNDER the splendid direction of Father Richard Hodge, O.F.M., the junior-senior retreat was really a success and one which .the seniors will always remember. Father Gerald Ryan, O.F.M., did equally well with the freshman-sophomore retreat. thirty-.fix IN HONOR OF MOTHER MARY Ross, October 6, several drarnatists presented the story of her life to an assembly of the student body. Mary joan O'Connell, Patricia Chamberlin, Sharon Montgomery, Alice Moore, Isabel Schmidt, and Marilyn Gibbons listen as Sally Malone who plays the part of a sister, narrates the story. At the back of the stage Carolyn Douglas, janet McMillan and Sharon Chad- bourne pantomime a scene from Mother Mary Rose's life. EVERY Sodality activity is well publicized. Mary Ann Sullivan, chairman, puts up part of the publicity display on the main ulletin board where everyone will be certain to see it. The reception of new members into the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin every year is always a solemn and beautiful occasion. Father Cornelius M. Power, Holy Names Chaplain, addresses the new sodalisrs. thirty-Jerzen E S S 4 EX E 1 1 2 f 5 2? Ei 'Q E as Ei is Es' X K 2 35 22 as ! sf E 2 i e 5 2 WHEN!!
