On September Sth l94O the Holy Name of Mary Hugh School open ed uts doors for the furst tume to the graduates of nts grammar school and the varuous other grammar schools un the surroundung communutues Every one was excuted and thrulled The Freshmen because thus was theur furst day of Hugh School and the l-aculty because thus was the furst Catholuc Hugh School on tne Westsude After the furst few days our excutement decreased and we gradually became used to the newness of everythung about us By the tume Chrustmas came around we all were seasoned hugh school veterans ready for the annual school play and for the mud term exams whuch came later In thus our lurst year we numbered twenty gurls and twelve boys In l94l our second year of Hugh School we had ummense pleasur of unutuatung the Freshmen wuthout undergoung any sad memorues ourselves for we had never been unutuated After thus frollc was over we settled down to work lor perhaps ut would be better lust to ay we settled downl Fueld trups to varuous pounts of unterest lectures by unterestung speakers the org anuzatuon of our Catholuc Students Mussuon Crusade Unut made the re maunung months of our second year pass only too quuckly School We now were twenty sux un number Thus year we consudered our selves very sophustucated for we had now acquured the honorable tutle of .lunuors New and deeper studues now claumed our attentuon as we grew older and a more seruous attutude began to be notuced There were no udle moments Varuous school actuvutues C S M C programs and the dufferent undertakungs un connectuon wuth the war effort kept all very busy ln the Waste Fats Campaugn the Scrap and Paper Druves as also un the sale of Bonds and Stamps much enthusuasm was evunced and several tumes we were rewarded for our valuant efforts lt was durung thus sessuon that the furst Varsuty teams were actually organuzed and outsude games played The boys and gurls halls were modernuzed by the addutuon of lockers and the gurls were guven a specual recreatuon room There was also an add ed collectuon of books made to our quuckly growung lubrary Our last year of Hugh School we were twenty ruve and oh' o worldly wuse' We knew everythung' School days were kept busy wuth cholastuc actuvutues and varuous extracurrucular events of umportance We were offucually and solemnly un ducted unto the C S M C on Fruday Aprul 28 a momentous occasuon for all of us lcontunued on followung paget I M I 'll V 4 g s We u ' 1 With the advent of September l942 we began our 'third year of High S'
