Pope Pius XIIwas averyillustrious Pope, one of the mo s t renfiarkable in history. His successor is also rernark- able in many ways. The death of lvlother Mary Mau- rice on Ixlarchfourth in Baltiniore brought sadness into the hearts of the Sisters of Mercy and into those of young and old whose lives touch theirs. As Motlier General she had, since 1953, governed in a saintly nianner the nine provinces of the Order, which include 6, 800 Sisters of Mercy. Six months of intense suffering preceded her untiniely death at the age of 53. The heroisrn with which she enibraced the Cross at the end of her life was a glorious echo of the generosity with which she had always accepted it. We pray with the Rev. Hugh M. Beahan, who preached at her fune- ral in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that her example, prayers and suffering will bring many more girls to that same difficult ded- ication. . .so that her work and that of the Sisters may continue to pour life and vigor into the Catholic Church in Aniericaf' nw XX!
