DEDIBHTIDIJ Dear Mother Mary: To you, dear Blessed Mother of God we dedicate our yearbook. lt's pages were edited with great care to honor you in this your Marian Year. Because of our love for you, and in thanksgiving for the wonderful graces you have secured for us, we are giving you the remembrances of our school year. Our classes, activities, prayers, and fighting spirit have been dedicated to you, Our Sweet Mother, ever watchful over our safety, ever ready to help us. Throughout these busy months you have been generous with your gifts and have proved over and over your love for us, and your eager desire to see us happy in heaven. Though not a day passed that you did not fail to assist all Namers, many days passed when we forgot to say Thank you. May this book, representing our best efforts, be proof of our love for you. We promise now to serve you by spreading Christ's word to all the worldg to consecrate ourselves to your Immaculate Heart. The joy of our lives shall be in loving you and in making you known, not only this year, but every year hereafter. We shall always invoke your intercession as we continue in this world amidst it's temptations. You will be our guide, our counselor, our means of salvation. Father O'Ca1laghan, then pastor oi the former Holy Name Parish, laid the cornerstone. Cne hundred years ago in April 1854, the first Mass was celebrated in Newburg Village by Bishop Amadeus Rappe in Thomas Byrnes home. This was the nucleus of Holy Name Parish. ln lune 1861, Father O'Ca11aghan laid the corner stone ot Holy Rosary Church Cabove.1 Rev. loseph Gallagher came in 1871 and the present Church was built on prop- erty purchased in 1879. He changed the title to Holy Name. Rev. lohn T. Carroll succeeded him in 1886 and a new pastoral residence was built in 1893. ln 1900 a Steeple was built on Holy Name Church and in 1906 the Carroll Building was constructed. Rev. P. 1. O'Conne1l came in 1913. He opened a tour year course in high school and the Sisters ot Charity ot Cincinnati came in 1914. Rev. William H. Scullen, succeeded Father O'Connel1 in 1922. For twenty-two years he did much to improve the high school. After his death, Scullen Library was dedicated to his memory. Monsignor Charles W. McDonough succeeded Dr. Scullen on May 16, 1943. He purchased the elementary building on Broadway and Worley Ave. in 1944. He remodeled Holy Name Church in 1951 and built the new Convent in 1953. The cafeteria was modernized in 1954.
