Father O'Ca1laghan, then pastor oi the former Holy Name Parish, laid the cornerstone. Cne hundred years ago in April 1854, the first Mass was celebrated in Newburg Village by Bishop Amadeus Rappe in Thomas Byrnes home. This was the nucleus of Holy Name Parish. ln lune 1861, Father O'Ca11aghan laid the corner stone ot Holy Rosary Church Cabove.1 Rev. loseph Gallagher came in 1871 and the present Church was built on prop- erty purchased in 1879. He changed the title to Holy Name. Rev. lohn T. Carroll succeeded him in 1886 and a new pastoral residence was built in 1893. ln 1900 a Steeple was built on Holy Name Church and in 1906 the Carroll Building was constructed. Rev. P. 1. O'Conne1l came in 1913. He opened a tour year course in high school and the Sisters ot Charity ot Cincinnati came in 1914. Rev. William H. Scullen, succeeded Father O'Connel1 in 1922. For twenty-two years he did much to improve the high school. After his death, Scullen Library was dedicated to his memory. Monsignor Charles W. McDonough succeeded Dr. Scullen on May 16, 1943. He purchased the elementary building on Broadway and Worley Ave. in 1944. He remodeled Holy Name Church in 1951 and built the new Convent in 1953. The cafeteria was modernized in 1954.

The interest he has shown in Catholic education has helped I-loly,Narne and the other high schools to prepare their students better tor the adult Catholic lite they will live after they leave the shelter oi school. Our Most Reverend Bishop, has sympathetic understanding and high ideals, which are manifested in the deep interest he shows for the welfare of the souls entrusted to his care. May God bless and keep him, always, is the prayer of Narners.
