I 7' in years to come as We think back on some big moments we've encoun- tered in going uflround the Clock with 'Lil David, We'll muso over them, laugh over them, and maybe even evoke a lit- tle tear over them. First, We relive those classes from 9:00 to 2:30 . . . Hliard at Workl life complained ot homework, thrilled at hearing our name on the Honor Roll, bit ott all our fingernails over tests, took our .Ns home to show the family .... Then We'll remember what Went on at l-loly Name atter hours, the clubs and tunl Some oi us attended Mother Seton League meetings on Wednes- days, others trotted out to Qrchestra practice or to Band. Newsvvriters Work- ed and snacked in the Staff Room, acolytes re- viewed solemn ceremos nies in church. We thrilled at dressing, after hours, in a frilly tor- mal, or in casual clothes tor a juke box dance. ln our memory book, too, We'll be interested in the pages about sports: 'lSlingshots, l953l Yes, going UAround the Clock with Little David is quite an adventure in memories. May all oi those hours bring Little David, lUUU strong, to l-leaven. Page 4 ragga ,f ,-, , 514 L 15' fi fx PY G A . f ' 1 I ' 1 J Kuff If K., fm? The interest he has shown in Catholic education has helped l-loly Name and the other hiah schools to prepare their students loetter for the adult Catholic lite they will live after they leave the shelter ot school. Cur Reverend Bishop, whose sympathetic understanding and high ideals are manifested in the deep interest he shows tor the Welfare ot the souls entrusted to his care, celelorates his Golden lubilee as a priest this year. To him Little David would like to express sincerest loyalty. Page 6 ur paafor Ten araduatina classes have left l-loly Name since Monsignor Charles McDonough first carrie to Newburgh. To each of these in turn he has been friend, counselor and father, always ready with a cheerful smile and a helpful hand to auide the students in moral and spiritual matters. Holy Narne's pastor and president of the high school is not only interested in the spiritual Welfare of his children lout he also takes a deep interest in scholastic and extracurricular activities. As we rnalce our way around the clock with Lil' David in our '53 Namer We find that Monsianor lVlcDonouah has set the pace for future Narners. E' Q' 'T JZN Q' fa W, W., Q Nj! DEDiCATiO!X!: TO LITTLE DAVID AND CO. For you, Namers, this book was Written. lt has been dedicated and assembled es- pecially for, you. Why, the entire theme points to you Namersl You come in all shapes and sizes and forms. Maybe you're a Monsignor with a rusty coclcer spaniel trailing in your path. Or perhaps you're a Freshman, still not quite sure where the Biology Lab or Iournalism Room are located. You lift your voices loud in assemblies and fervently during hymns at Mass. You show up on the football field with a never-say-die determination against the bigger guys. You're at home marching in green uniforms, with a tuba or slim flute. You're eager, optimistic, and Christian in your thinking. Yes. Lil' David, you're good stuff, and Wherever you go you'll bear the mark of a Namer. Upon graduation day you'll leave Holy Name a finished product of this philosophy. So, this book is for you and about you. We dedicate our '53 Namer to Little David! l t I TEV, 1.5.3 y 3: Y, MIL Mt , , , . . C? All oi these she has met with justice and sympathy. l-ler winning smile and help- ful hand are always ready . . . As we make our way around the clock with Little David, we realize that Mother Seton's Sisters of Charity play a big part in the lives oi every real Namer. Their sympathy and under- standing is unequaled, their patience unending, and their smile frequent. Never too busy to stop and listen to any problem or sor- row we may wish to bring them, the Sisters are real triends. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel tor their help. GUR PRINCIPAL AND ALL CUR SISTERS Breaking ground for the new convent November, 1952 They chose Christopher careersl Top Lett: Coach Heglawn to the boys whom he coaches, and HMr. l-leglaw to the student body, and particularly to Seniors whom he teaches in Civics class and councils with sympathy in vocational guidance. Second: Mr. loseph Lesko. History teacher to the under classman, capable coach of the basket'- ball players, and I-leglaw's little helper when it comes to football. Third: Mr. Marlo Termini, a new member of Holy Names faculty but an old I-loly Namer, he is gym instructor to the boys, and coaches Freshman football and basketball. Fourth: Miss Frances Nugent, veteran of three years, teaches speech to luniors and Seniors, and English to underclassmen. She directed the Christ- mas play put on by the Senior speech class. Bottom Row: Mrs. Ruth Seitz, an integral part of l-loly Name, teaches eighth grade, and is a real friend in need to everyone. Miss lacgueline Prech- tel teaches Freshmen the value of very prudent- ly, and sees the students again when they are lun-- iors and instructs them in how to find X in advanced algebra. The Annual went to press too early to secure a picture of Mrs. Ruth Short, girls' gym teach- er. Her arrival was looked forward to by many girls interested in athletics, and she keeps them stepping by her straight forward way. Under Shirley Adams' direction over a thousand Namers were put in their place in the Little Picture Sec- tion. lt is said, the last shall he first and so it was with Edward Schirra, manager of the Senior Picture Depart- ment, who was first to have his Section completed. Ed Schirra Shirley Adams Don Kozlowski Page lO8 YEARBOOK STAFF A1 Pinchak Mary Heard Sis Woodhall Sister Marie Emmanuel. S.C.. NAME and Namer advisor, for whom this page was planned as a surprise, by her Galley Slaves of '53. AND SOMEONE BEHIND THE SCENES Teacher, counselor, and friend-all these titles We attribute to Holy Names Sister Marie Emmanuel. Words are seemingly inadequate to tell her how much gra- titude We feel toward her. Sister is a teacher oi lournalism and English. This year in addition to all her labors in the Staff Room she has her own homeroom. One would think that these activities would more than suffice, but Sister also teaches two little girls their catechism several times a week. Sister has been with Holy Name for i6 years. Those ot us that had the pleasure of Working with her remember many things about Sister: We recall her encourag- ing us in all our Works. . . pointing out sensibly and kindly our rather dubious brainstorms . . . forgiving us tor our silly mistakes . . . gently telling us our la- test masterpiece was Hslightly corny . . . giving us two types ot food-for after school sessions in the Staff Room and for thought . . . helping us keep Christian principles in mind . . . giving us the right kind of humor . . . and at all times proving that she's one of l-loly Name's best liked teachers . . . Qur Advisorll Page lO9 THEY PAID YOUR ANNUAL BILLS Above: The students Who sold over a hundred dollars in ads and are now en- rolled in the ultra-ultra Hundred Club are Neil Artl, lames Coleman, loan Rybicki, Bryan Powers, Rosemary Driscoll, Larry Mako and Hank Croit. Below: Meet four luniors who managed the entire ad-drive, taking in S4800 in two Weeks, and keeping accounts miraculously straight. They are Ruth Meyers, loanne Nakel, Mary Cermak and Harry Uher.
