Anyone who wants to live a quiet lite with few risks picked a bad time to be born, says David l.ilienthal, Chairman oi the Atomic Energy Commission. y As high school students in 1951 we know this is true. But-the important thing isn't just realizing the truth of that statement. The important thing is to know how to meet the situations we are 'bound to encounter in our atomic future. Shall we shrug and say, O what's the use? We're in ior it! Shall we become bitter, or rebellious? Or decide to drown our concern in dating, or clothes, or a job, or an A report? No. Those are the escapes a coward seeks. Christian youth can face any future. First oi all, we know we Cross alone. Himself, is Charity. Only in proportion Holy Name. But Whatever field we enter, We can be sure of this -that we are all going to have opportunities to do big things 'for the Church. The world today is facing a Lent. Before the Easter comes there are going to be plenty of anguished tears shed, and much innocent lolood spilled. Perhaps martyrs are going to die during the next decades here in America as they are dying now behind the Iron Curtain. Our turn may even corne to stand up with Pancratius and Agnes. 3' At any rate, we can no longer be lukewarm. We must speak up for Christianity. And before we can do that, we must live Christianity. We cannot give what we haven't got. 5 Page 14 1 CLASS of '57 Ethel Mae Beck. Page 87 QUESTION IV: A TOOL SPORTS--AN END OR A MEANS? Your academic association, commented Pope I f Pius XII in a recent address, will put you on your My N guard against the tendency, too common, alas, ggi ily! nowadays, of making sports an end in themselves which they never can be, since the harmony be- ' 0 ' tween the physical development of man on the one side, and his intellectual and moral development v A on the other is not achieved. p lx Athletics, for the sake of athletics, adds the U Xi Los Angeles C.Y.O., is a waste of time, effort and jx X money. The Church is not interested in developing A ly X f great athletes: it is not the Church's place to act as ,, A K A a training farm for the Big Leagues. We cannot y emphasize too strongly that athletics as an end in themselves have no place in our programs. ff W X 'X Athletics, properly conducted, play a worth- 'l'K while part in the physical development of young people, however. Respect for authority, will power, coolness of temper, self sacrifice, iustice, honesty, determi- nation and many other . desirable qualities can be EEK jg instilled through competi- tive sports. HN's coaching staff and the other faculty members cooperate in impressing on Little David that sling- shots come in mighty handy at times, but that high school students have other far more important duties than the interest- ing one of taking care of neighboring grid N A1 NB Goliaths. 'A 'sf page 88 Grid Captain Elect Jim Reilley day- dreams over trophies in Carroll Building. DAWD SPRINTS THROUGH LAST GAME AFTER HAVING A BAD CASE of lossitis, Lil' Davids picked them up and laid them down as they sprinted through the last four games. Getting off to a poor start, with a loss to the Bengals, lil-O, the Green Wave tried to compensate by eking out a 13-O win over West High. Losing the next two games to Rhodes and W' est Tech, HN grid squad romped over a mediocre Iohn Marshall eleven, 26-O. Dropping the next two games to Latin, l8-0, and St. Ignatius, 28-14, might have looked bad in the records, but to the Holy Name student body these were undoubtedly two oi the best games played by the Big Green. Following up these two losses with wins over South and Lincoln was the Green Wave's way of apologizing for what proved a poor season, but not a poor showing. One sound argument for Holy Name's having achieved a good showing was the South High Game. Unleashing the Green Wave that cold November night was like sending small sailboats to combat the ships at sea. lce-chilled wind and rain were HN players worst enemy as they doubled the South High Flyers, 25-l3, to recapture the cov- eted Pig lron trophy.
