SPEECH! Owen Zidar delivers his oration in Mr. Mo.derick's speech class with all the elegance of Cicero. The frightened young' lady is Rosemary Mahoney, worried about her own material. Page 50 Trying to overcome incorrect and careless speech habits and to develop poise and ability in public speaking of any kind, are those Namers who sign up for speech, under tne guidance of Mr. Ed Moderickj Knowing how to speak effectively is particulary important today, when Catholics must be ready to give a convincing reason for the Faith they profess and the principles they uphold. Not only do Mr. Moderick's instructions apply to Catholic atti- tudes, however, but also to the conversation in everday life, which includes getting up in class to answer, directing a class meeting or just talking over common facts with a friend without making blunders in English. luniors and Seniors are eligible for all speech classes and may sign up for as many as four semesters. A PLACE FOR STUDY AND ENJOYMENT Enlarged this year so that it extends the entire length of the sec- ond tloor, Scullen Library is a real student's dream-come-true. Beautiful tiled tloors, new lights, freshly-painted walls, murals and good pictures, stacks ot clippings and pamphlets, all extend an invitation to quiet study or to reading just for pleasure. English teachers agree that if students would only read again, they would Write better, spell better, speak better, and think better. Sister Thomas Aquinas, librarian, does her best to promote such desirable ends. Eighty-two books are taken out each day, Sister reports, and there are innumerable calls for reference books, and for other materials needed for class preparation. Sunlit and spacious, renovated Scullen Library is now open for business. The picture below shows a portion the reference stacks and the charging desk.
