We love you because you believed in living your life with Christ as your pat- tern, and you were the most perfect replica we ever knew. When you went to Heaven, we realized the extent of our love. We wept, but so did others. People you had smiled at on the street, strong men you had helped. everyone who knew you-wept. They loved you tool Children had always crowded around you, and you lived Christ's words, Suffer the little children to come unto me. When we, as fourth graders, started the clamor, We want a free day, you saw that we had one. Some of the younger children do not 1'emember you very well, but they have heard of you, and they love you too. We, who were in the band, cherish the memory of returning to school to march and play for you after each victory, when you were ill. You believed that The School's the Thing. At the rallies in the gymnasium, your speeches so touched us that we were often moved to tears. Your 'Apep talks spurred the teams on to unbelievable heights. VVith your encouragement, and financial aid. The Name was able to become one of the best student publications in the country. We shall never forget you, Doctor, for your own voice seems to ring out saying, Once a Namer, always a Namerf' SENIORS '45 'gm Jlalq , jlum ,fum Unwwzd Maru, Students studying in the new library. In honor of our former pastor, Doctor William A. Scullen, the class of '45 has sponsored the installation of a new school library in Room 201, Carroll Building. Alumni have been contacted and urged to cooperate with the class by donating suitable literature, or sums of money which will be used to purchase books useful to the high school student. Many of the volumes now in the library were left to Holy Nami- High School by Dr. Scullen. All former Holy Name graduates are invited to visit the school, and. particularly, the library which is to be their tribute to Doctor Scullen. Realizing the difficulty youth has in deciding upon one particular step in life, Holy Name's faculty prepared a program for the week of March 19, which comprised career speeches from professional men and women. Reverend Mother General Mary Zoe of the Sisters of Charity, Mount Saint Joseph, Ohio, visited Holy Name during this important week, and addressed the students con- cerning thc religious life and future careers. Sister Rose Anthony, Mount Saint Joseph College, also spoke to the students on the life of a religious and the need for Sisters to carry on God's work. Gavin at Holy Name. In these years Coach Geever has produced many dream teams which have gone forth to cham- pionships and runner-up positions. Besides being basketball and football coach, Mr. Gavin teaches American history, and is the orig- inator of the history quizzes. Mr. joseph I. Gavin Illr. Daniel Mormile For the past seven years, Mr. Daniel Mormile has been a prom- inent figure at Holy Name. After graduating from Holy Name in 1933 he returned in 1938 to become assistant coach under Mr. Gavin. This year Danny became a member of the teaching staff. Hc teaches American history and has the junior homeroom, 202. Page 48 Mr. jack T. Hearns The man behind the scenes is the title bestowed on Mr. Frank J. Riessinger, Holy Name Athletic Business Manager. Mr. Riessinger has acted in this capacity for seventeen years. Besides handling financial mat- ters, Mr. Riessinger has coached many Holy Name baseball teams to coveted city titles. Mr. Riessinger is also active in parish affairs and is a member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society. Mr. Frank I. Riessinger '4'1'here's music in the air when- ever Mr. Jack T. Hearns, director of the Holy Name Band, is around. Holy Name's director arrived here in 1932 and through his ef- forts the band has become one of the finest in the city. Under the guidance of Hearns a joint concert of Holy Name, Benedictine and St. Ignatius bands was presented, May 6, at Music Hall. 'aw may alaazmfv wa fm fz4.w,2f011, L non, D. Blake, G. Ende, P. Distinguishing themselves as masters of power, speed, and deception, the mighty Gael grid machine of '44 smashed six of nine opponents to gain a second place berth in the Western Senate for the second consecutive year. With but four veterans on the squad, the Big Green pounded the Benedictine Bengals for a 13-0 count on a sultry Sunday afternoon, September 17, at John Adams field. Tom Russ shot off tackle from the 8-yard stripe for the first tally. The second score came on a tricky pass play, Flynn to Russ to Zusy who ran five yards for the extra point. Because Shultz and Flynn were available for only limited service, the Little Davids were unable to score on the title-defending Lincoln Presidents, and so went down to defeat, 13-0, at Rhodes field Satur- day, September 23. Both of the Crimson and White touchdowns came via the air in the initial and final stanzas. Holy Name gained its first Senate victory by subduing a stubborn West team, 8-6, at John Adams field, September 30. The Irish collected all eight points in the second period, on a safety and a sixty yard touchdown run by Frank Molls. After outscoring, outplaying, and outfighting the 'Rhodes Rams for three and one-half periods, the Green and White lost their second Senate fray, 14-13, on a blocked punt and a sixty yard touchdown run by the West Siders' halfback. Both Namer touchdowns were tossed by Shultz, with Don Washington snagging the first and Captain Killer Kilbane the second. Displaying a surprising amount of power, the Big Green Wave defeated an overrated West Tech eleven, 32-6, at the losers' field, October 7. Tom Russ, the lightning flashback, accounted for three of the Green Hurrieane's five touchdowns. Cathedral Latin's State champions overran a fighting eleven from Newburgh, 19-0, at the Muni- cipal Stadium, October 18. It was only the traditional Holy Name fight and possibly memories of the immortal Doctor Scullen that inspired the tired and weary Gaels to keep up their defense preventing the Mighty Lion from piling up a greater score so characteristic of it. Unloosing a furious passing and running attack, the Big Green blasted the John Marshall Lawyers, 212-0, at John Marshall field, October 26. Don Washington spearheaded the Irish offensive, plunging over from the ten-yard stripe for the final score. In a rough and tumble, hard-fought game, the Namers bombarded the neighboring South High Fliers, 20-T, at John Adams field, November Il. South, after scoring first, withered under a deadly Green and White attack, sparked by Shultz in which a total of six gridders were injured. By November 12, the last date on the Little Davids' grid schedule, the luckless but plucky Green Wave of September had transformed into a raging Green Hurricane, climaxing her season by whipping the St. Ignatius powerhouse, T-6, at West Tech Field. Shultz passed to Kilbane, who lateraled to Tom Russ, setting up the lone Gael tally, Shultz then plunged for the point that won the game. When the final gun echoed across West Tech field, the football season did not end, but had merely como to a conclusion, for lasting memories of this glorious team with such men as Shultz, Kilbane, Wash- ington, Sowinski and Russ will remain eternally in the hearts of every follower of the Green and White. Short on experience, but long on fight and courage, Holy Name's defending city cage champions got off to a slow start but gained momentum steadily to nail second place in the Western Senate. In pre-Senate contests, the Green Wave romped to a 42-23 victory over their neighborhood rivals, Garfield, while losing to W'arren Harding 39-29 and Painesville Harvey, 37-29. Leading throughout, the Gaels defeated the Alumni quintet, 40-34. Lincoln and West High toppled the Big Green Wave in its first two Senate frays by scores of 31-28 and 45-30 respectively. Snapping back into championship f o r m, th e Fighting Irish took a thril- ler from West Tech with Sowinski and McDonnell netting a total of 23 points. Holy Name's S e n a t e kings re-established their rank as one of the tougher Cleveland cage squads by smashing the Rhodes Rams, Holy Name Holy Name Basketball Record Warren 42 Garfield ,.,,,,.,. ,,.,.,.... 2 . The dynamic duo, Sowinski and McDonnell caged a total of 27 points for the Namers. Steadily improving, the Green Hurricane outscored John 1VIarshall's revamped quintet, 44-40. Holy Name's G r e en Warriors wrecked the neigh- boring South High Fliers, 32-18. Due to the slick ball handling of Murray, Lom- bardo, and Kilbane. the Irish were never threatened. 43-23. Fighting up to the final gun, the Big Green dropped a close one to Cathedral Latin's title-bound aggregation, 30-28. Crushing a last period rally, the Newburghers conquered the Ignatius Wildcats, 35-32, to end the regular schedule in a second place deadlock with Rhodes. In a playoff contest, the Green Tornado blasted Rhodes for the second time, 38-28, earning the right to play the eastern senate runner-up, Benedictine, at Public Hall. Although staging a magnificent last period rally, the Big Green Wave was unable to get in front of the Bengals to lose the last game of the season, 45-42. This quintet of '45 has undoubtedly carved memories into the heart of every Namer. Carl Lombardo, the unsung hero of the squad, t'Wee Willy Murray. and Killer Kilbane, who put in the points when they were most needed, Whitey Sowinski and Pat McDonnell, the Ubasketball twins who teamed up to consistently toss in basket after basket, will be remembered forever. But more than that, it has led the grad- uates within sight of the gateway of the future, to a sphere of opportunities for their careers. Transition to a world of strife presents grave difficulties to the graduate. There- fore, we, the seniors, urge the school to pray for a JUST peace 5 study earnestly, so that our country may be assured of future citizens who are highly alert, keenly aware of the present world sit- uation, and wholly prepared for tomor- row. Deep-rooted are our Alma Mater's teachings, long will the seniors remember her priests, faculty, and students. Farewell, Holy Name, builder of strong Catholic men and women.
