Through the hard work of the Social Action Club, directed by Sr. Margretine, I-I.F. raised almost EB2,000. ln talks and movies, Fathers Leuer, Ayagriste, Gabriel, and McGovern presented the mission picture. At the Mass organized by Miss Kresal, Fr. Leuer announced the Mission Queen, Tami Barry, and runners-up Lorena Meza, Pauline Huzau, and Trish Smith. After the senior class volleyball victory, students munched on a variety of foods, from tostadas to watermelon. Many also sent a friend to jail and threw wet sponges at Sr. Gerarda and Fr. McGovern. Students, as well as many teachers, donned their tennis shoes and filled their sponsor sheets to support the various classes and departments of H.F. The promise of prizes, such as tennis shoes, bicycles, and even televisions, gave many joggers an extra incentive to jog for the full hour, but many, such as Sister Pauline, took time out to cool off on the swings. Whether they walked, skipped, ran, or crawled, all jog-a-thon participants were winners as they crossed the finish line, happy about l the funds they had raised. VOEQ Wh? Happenings 17 Sharing and Caring Enrich Our Life at Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is a time for sharing with others, a time to give thanks to God for the many gifts we are blessed with. Thanksgiving spirit shone throughout Holy Family as the holiday approached. Students gathered food for Thanksgiving baskets through Block 1, enabling us to send dinners to twenty needy families. Men from the Saint Vincent De Paul Society tparish veterans, whose daughters were Holy Family graduatesl picked up the baskets. Lockers decorated with Thanksgiving turkeys added to the festivities as we prepared for our annual Thanksgiving Mass. While waiting fifteen minutes for Father Loomis to arrive, we practiced singing All Good Gifts, Pass It On, and Thank You, Lord. We approached the altar carrying overflowing baskets of stuffing, yams, corn, wine, and pumpkin pie. It was a great feeling to know that we had made others happy. 1, ,47-N3 Y Entering the church, Father F A F Loomis and Anna Matias j F T 3 announce the beginning of the . ,N T U Thanksgiving Mass. , i'g,, T lii QE Monica Gifford, Karen Ramos, 5 and Maria Borges share in the RV spirit of Thanksgiving. 18 Happenings Melissa Campos and Lily Durango ex- press their friendship with a handshake. The Fine Arts Department presented A Christmas Fanfare, with Miss Breden as director and Paul Pittman as accompanist. Although the Russian flu diminished Glee Club numbers, the girls worked hard to join their voices into one. With the help of Concert Glee, Choral Fundamentals and A Capella, the full meaning of Christmas rang clear. The Concert was just the beginning. When Glee Club sang at St. Vibianas Church for the Mass sponsored by the Right to Life group, Cardinal Manning praised their performance. The excitement reached a climax on January 31, 1979, as the juniors lined up for the procession into church. Through the songs in the Mass we united in voice and spirit to ask God,s blessing on our school and friends. Proclaiming I Am But a Precious Stone,', we received our rings from Mrs. DeRosa, Sr. Ann Eileen, and Msgr. Lirette who, along with Sr. Margretine, symbolize our junior year. As we made the ring pledge, each of us expressed loyalty to our school and friends. Happenings 29 The 70's . . . Remember? You've heard of the Roaring 20's and Fabulous 5O,s from history books and relatives. As the 70's close, we realize it was an important decade because we experienced its events and are able to pass the memories on to the next generation. The 70's signify Nixon's resignation, Watergate, end of the Vietnam War, a drastic energy shortage, gas rationing, Patty Hearst's kidnapping, the deaths of two popes, mass suicide in Guyana, and prominently, the Bicentennial. At Holy Family a major earthquake damaged the church, Sr. Ann Eileen served as principal, the campus was renovated, and President Ford visited Glendale. The 70's hold memories of smiling faces, bell bottoms, The Brady Bunch, ponchos, mini skirts, streaking, Love Story, platform shoes, Jaws, Part 1 8: 2, 50's nostalgia, Dorothy Hamill and Farrah haircuts, down jackets, skiing, skateboards, disco, The BeeGees, pop rocks, natural foods, jogging, and Steve Martin. Someday the now unnamed 70's will have a slogan like the Gay 9O's, for now, we look toward the decade of the 80's and the people, events and styles it will bring. Founder of Holy Family School and pastor of the parish for over 50 years, Msgr. Michael J. Galvin died in March of 1974. His successor, Msgr. Charles Cranham, died in 1975, after serving as pastor for four years. A drastic energy crisis left stations short of gas, making rationing and skyrocketing prices unavoidable. On the morning of February 9, 1971, residents of the San Fernando Valley were jarred awake by a shattering earthquake registering 6.5 on the Richter scale. The collapse of hospitals, chimneys and major damage to Holy Family Church caused mass confusion not soon forgotten. 30 Happenings J xx The celebration of the Bicentennial, 1976, inspired manufacturers to produce items such as red, white, and blue beer cans, watches, and even tennis shoes. At Holy Family, we celebrated with patriotic flag ceremonies and skits. Two evaluations of Holy Family occurred during the 70's, requiring many planning sessions like the one attended above by Sr. Ann Eileen, Sr. Emerita, and Mrs. Sandy Bogan. Happenings 31 Education I-las Many Faces You can watch a harmless tarantula crawl up a biology teacher's arm or live out a fantasy while becoming Cinderella and this would all be a part of a worthwhile day at school. You can try to develop your talents, creating a mosaic sculpture or performing in concert. Or sit down for a moment with a two-year old and find she is the one to educate you. A celebration in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe can be a play which helps you as a Christian to understand the Virgin's story as well as a lesson in Spanish. Juniors 65 SOPHOMURES There's a Fresh Wind Blowing As sophomores we began to make new discoveries about ourselves. Giving a warm welcome to the wandering freshmen, we opened the way to new friendships and also unlocked our memories of freshman year. As we struggled through the dangers of driving and geometry, the Mickey Mouse Fan Club lifted our spirits. Our feet were kept mostly on the ground, though, at the jog-a-thon, where only our enthusiasm ran skyhigh. When Mr. McGreal returned to begin driver ed in the 7th week of school, we faced the approach of grades, debates on Christmas dance dates, and money-raising boxes of Almond Roca. As the NEDT drew near, we experienced a fear of failure, but our class pins pricked us up. Insights from Julius Caesar and David Copperiqeld expanded our knowledge. With the Senior Sophomore Breakfast, we saw the door close on our second year, but new doors open to the future. 53 W at .. 1. 2 1 Alexandra Alarcon Katherine Alba Corine Alegria Sandra Aleman Mairena Arevalo Maria Arjona Solange Arnaud Karri Becker 15.5 Maria Borges Helene Bozonier Jennifer Brehme Ines Cabanilla 66 Sophomores Claire Allen Sarah Arca Tammy Beckham Carolyn Boehm Monica Cavillo Anna Camarillo xx 0 5411. On that day filled with fun and caring, missionaries shared their experiences. Using the theme We Thank You, Lord, the club prepared the Thanksgiving Mass. After a busy week of collecting from Block 1 classes, food was given to needy families. Christmas brought the Angel Tree, and students played Santa for orphan children. Visiting convalescent homes, members sang holiday songs and gave cookies and punch to lonely patients. Early in the year and again on Valentine's Day, students sent vvarm Pop-O-Grams to their Super Friends. Mrs. Anne Combs advises biol- ogy students to get involved in ex- periments by using a hands on policy. Students wonder, ls she Mother Nature or Mrs. Biology? Her hands also work skillfully creat- ing table decorations for the Sopho- more-Senior breakfast and making jewelry. Miss Maureen Corbett believes in physical fitness and tries to filter some of her conviction to her PE students, encouraging them to de- velop a well-rounded sports back- ground and to engage in exercise for health and enjoyment. In her first year at H,F. she has passed on her enthusiasm to the students, whom she finds friendly, and to the faculty, whose support she openly appreciates. IT'S NOW She can often be seen in the corridor ' cheering up a frustrated algebra student with encouraging words. Mary Ellen Carter, who teaches math, blends. a bit of humor with teaching that provides a comfortable yet industrious atmosphere for learning. Miss Carter received her B.A. at Immaculate Heart College and continued her graduate work at U.C. Berkeley. She has found teaching at H.F. to be very rewarding because of the positive attitude of both the students and teachers. In her free time Miss Carter takes interest in photography, bicycling, playing the recorder, and improving her Spanish. Miss Carter was able to put her Spanish to work three years ago when she left H.F. to teach at a girls' high school in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Fortunately, this assignment was only temporary, and she returned a year later, bringing back the wisdom and cheerfulness that make her such an important part of Holy Family's now. Guides 101 IT'S US For an innocent tourist who almost ruined the filming of Dr. Zhivago while riding horseback in the countryside of Spain, Miss Jacqueline Kresal proves to be a very interesting religion teacher. She was called by Sr. Diane while staying in Wyoming, and asked to come to H.F. She finds that Sr. Diane and she have this important thing in common: their interest in people. Miss Kresal's hobby is traveling, an expensive one, she admits. She has visited ten countries, has traveled all over the U.S., and has served as a missionary in Gidalgo, Mexico. Living in a sixteenth-century Augustinian monastery with no heat and no hot water sounds difficult, but Miss Kresal says she felt rewarded by the generosity and great simplicity of the people she worked with. Studying at the University of Madrid, she learned fluent Spanish. She uses this language, directly imported from Spain, in her literature class. Miss Kresal plans to continue teaching at Holy Family. She likes the faculty Iuthey are able to work well togethernl and the students l they are here to learnnl. 102 Guides Mrs. Maria DeRosa, junior moderator, can't decide whether to take Vince or Christopher to the Prom. She wants to prepare stu- dents for careers available to wom- en who know a second language. In her Spanish Class, when students don't listen, she quickly grasps their attention by talking to the walls. A busy mother of two, she teaches Sunday pre-school and plans to take Chicano studies classes at CSU at I..A. during the summer. Sister M. Pauline tries to develop in her social studies students an un- derstanding of human relationships. She believes that learning content is not as important as knowing where to find and how to use information. Sister envisions future travel in the Greek Islands and the Holy Land. Her busy schedule includes lectur- ing at Mass and working in the Eu- charistic Ministry and the Marriage Encounter Community. Sister M. Rupertine has a daily schedule more varied than anyone else's on the staff. As maintenance supervisor, she never knows where she will be called next to handle problems that pop up all over the school. At home, Sister functions as Community Representative for the Sisters. In both her roles she moves around quietly with a smile that promises, Help is on the way. Mrs. Kathy Hebron says of her first year at Holy Family, I feel good just being here. She consid- ers business training practical for girls wanting to start a career early or to supplement income while at- tending college. Though some stu- dents confuse her with Miss Cor- bett, her two-year old daughter Tara doesn't. Mrs. Hebron would like to live in lsurprisell Africa. St. Victor super- vises the office area during lunch. As a retired English teach- er, she is a lover of good reading and can usually be seen with a book in hand even if she is on her way to the faculty room with an armload of the morning mail to pass out. Saturday mornings, Sister teaches a CCD class at the grade school. Sister Margaret Mary trains student assistants who help pro- cess library materials. She likes to hear her aides remark, I real- ly know where to find things now. Outside library hours Sis- ter transcribes books into Braille and listens to Tschaikowsky. She would like to revisit Paris or go rafting down the Truckee River near Sacramento. Jr an 0' Sister M. Realino uses drama- tization in describing the beauty and intricacy of the human body. She considers the classroom an exciting scene when she can help students get enthusiastic about science. Sister wants to visit the Holy Land, Greece, and Egypt. Much of her energy goes into activities related to the sen- ior class and CSF. Mr. Arthur McGreal, driver education instructor, has been preparing Holy Family students for driving for more than twenty- five years. I-le now sees the daughters of his first students sit- ting before him. Monday morn- ing class brightens up when Mr. McGreal tells an anecdote to il- lustrate some principle of driv- ing. Guides 103 Sr. Margretine, moderator of Social Action Club and the junior class, is also a Senator in the B.V.M. congregation, a Eucharistic Minister, and part of the training team for the Area Pastoral Council. Still, she finds time to visit the sick and to teach religion, Spanish and social studies. K ,. X. V? 104 Guides .71 r r. if ' Sr. Emerita, Mrs. Young, Mrs. Zuber and Sr. Florence read the prayer of commitment during the annual commissioning of faculty members. Sister Rosemary and Andrea Devay pick out interesting slides for the Holy Family documentary. Sr. Suzanne, who teaches English, works a daily triangle of duties between convent, school, and her father's near- by apartment. She intends some day to enlarge the route to include England, Germany, and Greece. Sister says that Response needs her attention every month except July and August. The cheery voice behind the treasurer's door belongs to Sr. Emerita, who takes your money with a smile and gives a bonus of friendly talk as she makes out your tuition re- ceipt. The neatness of her of- fice recalls to seniors the warm days of Eng. II in 109. 5 sg. G 4 .-X Y 'N N K-qw end' Sr. Roselina prepares students for adult life in trying to develop them into better homemakers. Her students rate her homemaker of the year and praise her two-inch pancakes. For the Herald Examin- er cooking contest, she produced a prize-winning plum pudding. She makes designs for needlepoint and wishes she had more time to spend creating meals to entertain groups. Sr. Florence appreciates the buoyancy of Holy Family girls. They are alive, she says, and the atmosphere is friendly here. Sister describes her first year as one spent getting to know you. She wants to help English I students see literature as a form of art which can provide enjoyment and make for a fuller life. Mrs. Young enjoys thinking of new ideas and activities and seeing her art students create. She likes girls to be able to see the elements of design in art, nature, and all of life. Husband, dog, and cat plus nu- merous recreational activities pro- vide a busy and warm home life. She really loves teaching and says the best teacher she has ever had was her mother. Mrs. Teny Zuber divides her time between teaching fEnglish and Speechl and professional writing. This year she and her husband han- dled public relations work for the film Lord of the Rings. Mrs. Zuber creates the lighter half of the annual Christmas program. This year her speech class presented skits featuring the Peanuts charac- ters. MX ttyl I I XMLNM Life has given Sister Rosemary various opportunities for intellectual exercise. Her interest in art 'developed casually, like a hobby: an hour with a borrowed book, an afternoon in a museum. Sister's expertise in communications grew much more deliberately. She recalls publishing a school paper in San Francisco, pursuing her M.A. in English at Catholic U. in Washington, doing communications workshops for the B.V.M. congregation in the Middle West, and finally arriving at Holy Family to teach creative writing, set up the English Lab, and moderate the Family Gazette. A third interest, religious education, has kept Sister in parish CCD. I see sixth graders who can't bless themselves, and I know I must help them, she explains. Whether casually or as an assignment created for others, Sister Rosemary has found many ways to exercise her mind, enriching other lives besides her own. Many people wondered what went on down in our little hole in the wall, but no one truly found out until she became a member of staff, living in our corner of the world. The LIFE is contained within these pages. The photography, body copy, and captions give a glimpse of the life that went on at Holy Family during the '78-,79 school year. Hopefully, this glimpse will bring back, now and in the future, a full picture of special times and special friends. 144 Closing ,- .- .-'...f ..:...
