I hear the gentle wind and see the morning sun spread light upon the path- I think of you. I walk into the building. - Silence swells about me, And you are everywhere. I sit in the schoolroomg learning how to love you, even more. The sunlight spots the floor with a light that is dull compared to your glow. A figure dressed in black, hurries to us. The Rosary that you love so much, fastened at her side. A bell rings -- callingg even as you are calling Laughter breaksg voices fill the hallsg joy and relaxation reigns and all of it for you. This is Holy Family, Mother. The school of which you are so much a part. Q The classes, the meetings, the games, in each group You are the center, Bringing to us the light and faith of Fatima. -REGINA O'CONNELL, Class '51 llur Pastor My Dear Girls, The slogan for Catholic Book Week this year was: Read wisely, share truth. Let us borrow the motto and change it to read: Do wisely, share God. Do wisely. The prudent woman does wisely, and the wise woman shares God. We act wisely, when, as creatures of His infinite intellect, we obey Him in all things. We listen to His calling, and we respond by fulfilling His desires. He calls us all to a dehnite vocation. We do wisely when we happily and earnestly heed His wish. Share Godf, This is the natural consequence to the first part of our life-long motto. We share God by living God's life-and His life is the life of grace. Grace is in some way an actual participation in the life of God, the Giver of grace There is no greater assurance for salvation than grace-obtained by living always the Catholicism we humbly profess. Thus it is with a heart filled with gratitude for your many kindnesses to me, and filled also with hope for your success in your future endeavors that I pray God's blessing on you always. . Devotedly in Christ, Monsignor M. Galvin REVEREND FRANCIS O'BRIEN Priests To these priests, gratitude is indeed expressed. Their weekly religious instructions are appreciated by the students Father Cremins and Father O'Brien have done so much for the Varsity in the line of coaching. We thank them sincerely. I thought I would have to in order to accomplish sharing an adventure with you, so I am writing a special kind of letter. You remember the big decision I had to make when I graduated from grammer school fyou remember, because I remember bothering you for weeksj? Which high school would I attend? Well, I want to thank you, Mother, for help- ing me, with about sixty other girls who had the same decision to make, I entered the threshold of our loved Holy Family High. I Entering a new school filled with new faces is usually a difficult, task, but not at Holy Family, where friends are quickly made. With the cheerful assistance of Sister Mary Celestine and Sister Mary Eleanor Marie, a new and exciting episode began. Shortly after we embarked upon our high school career, what should befall us to our dismay but the period that is known as Initiation Week! Though filled with fun and hilarity for our Senior Sisters , it was for us one week of fear and uneasiness. For in that week we are given laborious tasks, such as scrubbing the basketball courts with worn out toothbrushes, wearing silly clothes and hairdos, or reciting our epitaph as punishment for being poor, lowly frosh. We chose joan Schulte as Best Big Sister. After having been initiated, we diligently plunged into our studies. How proud, we felt when we found that we could use the libraries in the high school. Another quite new and different experience is the study period, which we find most useful for during its forty five minutes, we get in all our homework. We do have lots of it since there is Religiong Algebra, with all its complicated equations, Latin I or Spanish I, Qwhat translations lj, Ancient History, trying to remember dates and important characters, and English, diagramming and telling the principal parts of a sentence. The old saying, You never know how much you don't know, until you find how much you do know , can be well applied to us. Upon being received into you Sodality, Virgin Mother, we plunged soul-on into our rst retreat. It was truly an inspiring period. Didn't you think we were perfect angels? Toward the close of the school year, the freshman honored the Seniors with a Tea. This brought a lot of tears, for their graduation would mean that we would say goodbye to the wonderful girls whom we proudly called Senior Sisters . We realize that someday we will be walking in their footsteps down the same aisle. ,.,.., ,,,. -.:.:.-.:f-,va-:rss .,.. I A.,,,,,,,.,.,,.,- ,. s, ,-M, ,E ,W ,:.,,...:,.,. .,. .. ,. WM, ., , . . Unfortunately this optimistic state was soon replaced by the malady peculiar to Sophomores, appropriately termed, Sophomoritis . Of course, gloom did not predominate in our class for long, since we were anxious to display our fine school spirit and loyalty. A School day, school days, trying to prove and iind theorem and triangles in geometry, memorizing-dates and details of modern history, discovering the globe and finding new countries in geography. Then, of course, in literature we meet good-old Silas Marner. We find that we have talented actresses in our midst, such as Diane Barabe, who played Scrooge in a Christmas play we presented. Looking out of the classroom, our garden can be seen. If there are not roses there, beautiful weeds will always be found. A delightful sight will meet the eye to all old-timers-a brand new paint job on our old garage 'or handy-room. In your Sodality, Dearest Lady, the Sophomores hold an honored place, Earlene Berry is the chairman of the Confraternity committee, Nancy Sullivan and her- Christopher campaign, then the Sodality carnival with its enthusiam and fun of choosing the Mission Queen. This year a Sophomore won the coveted honor, jude Longshore. Even though we do say so, the Cherry Chopper's Stomp was enjoyed by all who attended. We were quite proud too, of our choice of Cupid's Couple , Peggy Krier and her escort, don't you agree? Mother, we ordered our school sweaters, though we don't receive them 'till we are juniors. We can't help but feel proud that in a short time we too will be wearing Holy Family sweaters! And wait until everyone sees our letter design! We think it's novel! We entertained the Seniors with a breakfast on Senior Class Day. It coin- cided with one of your lovely feasts, Dear. Lady-Help of Christians. Hoping that it would be nice for them, we expended much time and effort in preparations. The tables were decorated in senior class colors and the senior toasts, we thought were most original. Our one idea in mind was to make the seniors look back upon this affair and say that their Senior-Sophomore Breakfast was a most enjoy- able one and that the Sophomores were most efficient. Thanks to the untiring efforts and ever-ready assistance of Sister Mary Ann Eileen, Sophomore year was one of many happy memories, we were now ready to begin the third episode in our high school career. A debt of gratitude is entitled to Mary Therese Burkett, our Student Body President, who with the assistance of Sister Mary George Francis and all the officers, has done so well in guiding us through the year 1948-49. The Student Body of Holy Family assembled as such for the first time early in the year on the day that is traditionally entitled Spirit Day . Final initiation of the freshmen, the welcoming address, reading of the charter by the Spirit of Holy Family High as portrayed by Joan Rowleyg the explanation of the athletic code, singing the cheer song and the class competition for the best cheer, ghield and songg then the presentation of the awards followed by the Alma Mater ong. Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom, you are our inspiration in our Scholastic work at Holy Family. Classes in Religion, English, History, Science, Math, Typing, Languages and Gym make up our busy days. Hours of labor are put into study to acquire the knowledge that will last us a life time. As we pass from class to class, we always salute you as you lovingly watch over us from your pedestal in the main corridor. Sanitation and Student Control Committees are active influences in keeping our school premises clean and orderly. You must know about the Bazaar which was part of the campaign for funds to enlarge the Church. Of course, the High School did its share in this project and very successfully by setting up an attractive Booth, which displayed proudly the wares made by the students. Our Mothers' Guild of Holy Family is a most active organization. Mrs. W. T. Fitzgerald is president this year. Many times during the school year we are delightfully surprised and entertained by our Mothers, God bless them. In Feb- ruary, it's the Valentine party. The box luncheon in April is always a lovely affair. Then the Fashion Show' and Tea in May is a delight to behold. And every month a tasty breakfast is prepared for us on Sodality Meeting Day. A The Glee Club and Choir under the direction of Sister Mary Franciscus, have gained great praise for their work. Each year the Glee Club is the main attraction at St. Patrick's Day Ball at the Glendale Civic. The spring recital is a thing of joy and beauty. The Choir renders Church music at Requiems, Christmas and Easter Masses. The Student Body of Holy Family is truly a co-operative organization. The Faculty working for and with the students. The girls in turn achieving their goal in the world of today for the future of the Kingdom of Tomorrow. 'fn u li e n I OFFICERS: Bud MARY THERESE BURKETT Prefident . ANNUAL STAFF PARTY GIVEN BY EDITOR IO MARIE RUSSO MARY SMITH . . . . .GUEST OF HONOR WAS Your Sodality for us has always been like a .stepping stone over the rough spots, from Freshman Reception Day to Coronation Day. Through its training we are drawn closer to you and your Divine Son. As prefect of your Sodality we chose Patty'Kiernan and as her assistants, Kathleen Higgins, Mary Jeanne Stopper, Betty Yaeger, and Nancy Sullivan. Un- der the able guidance of these officers and our Moderator, Sister Mary Ann Michele, we have had a successful Sodality year. Lady in blue, let me tell the activities of our Sodality. We have monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of each month, starting with attendance at Mass, Holy Communion and Breakfast, followed by important meetings, skits, and reports from the different committee chairmen, as to what we should do daily to bring more honor and glory to your Son through You. Immaculate Mother, on your lovely, white feast of December the eighth, a lasting memory lingers in the heart of every Holy Family girl, alumna and student. Mass and Communion initiate the day. Pilgrimages to all the class room shrines singing one of Mary's hymns are followed by the highlight of the day--the burning of our pledges to you in the grotto. Later in December the beautiful tradition of Candle-lighting becomes a reality as the entire Student Body marches through the corridors carrying lighted' candles and singing age-old carols to your Infant Son. There is retreat, three days which are spent in prayer and meditation. Days in which the bad spots are polished and good spots decorated. How close to you and Him we feel those happy days! The Sodality Carnival approaches which brings the anticipation and ex- citement of selecting the Mission Queen, who represents our ideal of the perfect sodalist. It is an afternoon of fun and frolic and all the financial returns are deposited in our Sodality treasury. There are the different projects carried out by the various committees: the Book Fair, sponsored by the Literature Committee, First Saturdays, Pope's Triduum and reminders of your feast days by the Our Lady's Committee, hospital work and teaching by the Confraternityg collecting stamps, clothes, cards by the Mission Committee. This year in the Apologetics Contest the cup and first place were won by senior, Marion Rohde. Regina O'Connell, sophomore, placed second, and Betty Ryan junior, merited third place. Then there is Mother-Daughter Tea, in which we show our Mothers around the campus as we trip over our formals in trying to get mother to Come, see this. The May Coronation brings the year to a happy climax. With a wreathe of flowers we crown you, as our Queen of May and Queen of ourhearts. This wreathe symbolizes our devotion to you, but most of all it signifies our gratitude for a most wonderful school year. Our motto, Ad jesum Per Mariam , will live with us forever. .:g,:2,-I ,..., E-E: V ,: ---- -. r5-:e5-,-2-:2-- - Hur LHlIY,S Sndality SODALITY OFFICERS PATRICIA KIERNAN Prefeff KATHLEEN HIGGINS Vice-Prefer! We, the alumnae, learned to love and know you in a most intimate way within the walls of Holy Family. Now we would like to add to these annals the story of ourselves, still seeking your protection and love, but in places and occupations far different from those we knew at our dear Do you remember the very first class to sing your praises back in 1941? How proud we were then to be Holy Family girls, and looking back over nine years of development, accomplishment, and ever growing tradition, we now claim Holy Family as our own with an even greater pride. We cannot forget that true scholarship has ever been fostered at Holy Family. The torch of knowledge has been handed down to each one of the classes in turn. The torch has never grown dim, it has never failed. Scholastic honors and scholarships have come every yearg We are justly proud of our scholastic achievements and the tradition thus established for eanest, serious study. A feeling of nostalgia creeps over us at times when dear, familiar faces and scenes come crowding into our minds: spirit week, proms, fun in the social room, athletics, sodality, chats with Sister after school-all so much a part of Holy Family. g ' Dear Mother, as we look back over these scenes, we can see you so clearly. You always played a leading role in all our activities. You were there in the silence of retreat. You were there on our joyous prom night. It was you to whom we turned at examination time. How comforting it is to know that you are with us still, that you will always be with us. When your Divine Son called Catherine Sartoris to be Sister Mary Mar- garet joang Mary Eifert, Sister Mary Ann Lenoreg Sue Stopper, Sister Mary Car- melitag Dorothea Rothe, Sister Mary Ernest, Henrietta Blomer, Sister Mary Thomas Marting Jean Leonard, Sister Mary john Catherine, Virginia Macatee, Sister Mary Helen Marie, Madeline Clemente, Sister Mary Rose Lorenzeg Barbara Ehring, Sister Mary Margaret Clare, and Mary Frances Maher, Sister Mary Francis, we re- joiced that God should thus favor our classmates by asking them to be His own in a special way as Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Happiness was ours when we learned that Roberta Wombacher, Kathryn Steger and Roseanne Miller had also entered His service as Sister Bernadette, O.P., Sister Luke, O.P., and Sister Margaret Mary of the Sacred Heart, O.D.C. We have gone forth into all walks of life: the married state, the religious life, the business and professional world. To my knowledge, in no other school is the dedication of self to the acquisition of' Marian virtues such an integral part in the lives of the students. You well know what a great source of consolation and inspiration this has been to me. As long as our girls continue to follow you Mary there will be no concern for the future of Church and State Arded by the grace of God our Catholic educational system shall have conceived and brought forth cultured Catholic women loving self sacrificing wives and mothers devoted Religious Christian citizens of this world saints for heaven For each and every child of yours I ask a special blessing But dear Lady I would ask you particularly to draw the Senior Class of 1949 very very close to yourself Strengthen their wills to choose not only the good things of life but the best keep them pure in soul and body enlighten and encourage them when the road of life seems dark and tortuous give them peace of heart that the world may have peace So dear Mother it is my earnest prayer that as in the past you have watched over our girls with true maternal solicitude so you may continue to be their con fident and guide and bring them safely to the Heart of your beloved Son Your loving and grateful Sister Mary George Francis B V M sg 1 - 1 .. , . i i 1 ' 1 s 1 1 a 9 . 9 s 1 , . 9 ,...
