Yes, a loss for words to express our appre- ciation for four wonderful years spent at Holy Family. Now as we are about to leave these hallowed halls we wish to extend our heart- ful gratitude and appreciation to the devoted Sisters for their untiring and unceasing efforts to guide us and show us the way. At first we encountered calm seas but as we cruised on we were engulfed in those dangerous whirlpools of Algebra and those hidden reefs of Latin and History which affected many of us aboard. Many similar misfortunes occurred: however, success was our goal and we managed to complete safely the first leg ol' our voyage and we landed on the lsle ol' Vacation lor a stay ol' about eight weeks. September 1948--49 As we embarked on the second lap ol' our voyage we were drifting help- lessly in circles and triangles of Geometry, this year again we came across the reels ol Caesars Gallic X'Vars, Biology, French, and Spanish. But despite this year's many dangers we enjoyed this part ol' our cruise immensely. X'Ve had our first big class get-together on B deck fBrenton's Farmj and we enjoyed a good season of sports. But our joy was mingled with sorrow: our faithful skipper fSister Mary Louisej departed from this world to meet her Master Pilot. Winter gave way to summer and we enjoyed a brief rest from our labors. September 1949-50 Already half of our voyage had been accomplished. We shoved off in our sturdy vessel for the third year of our cruise. Lost in a heavy fog, we made our way carefully, lest we meet disaster on the shallow sandbars, Cicero's Orations, Physics, and Stenography. Our navigators, well acquainted with this work, again guided us safely through our various perils. But during this time there were many activities on deck. We sponsored our first dance: our glee club held their first concert, which was a success: and our basketball team beat New Bedford High twice and went on to be champs of New Bedford. We also received our class rings which was the first sign that we were nearing our objective. At last, summer once more found us lying at anchor and we pre- pared ourselves for our final period of activities. September 1950-51 With three years behind us, we sailed into the Straits of Rooms Three and Four , which provided ample work for all. just over the horizon lies the object of our four years - our diplomas. Although there still remains several barriers to overcome, we will let neither storm nor tempest deprive us of our treasure at this late stage of our cruise. With the final leg of our voyage' in sight and our days of blissful happiness aboard ship brought to a close, many of us will be forced to travel upon the more perilous Sea of Life . No matter what the future may bring, we hope our shipmates will show the same spirit and loyalty that prevailed during this past voyage in quest of their Golden Diplomas . Resplendent in glory, I was brought to the throne of God by Our Lady herself who put me at my ease as only she could. She whispered to me that God granted one special wish to each newcomer. My request was to see my old Holy Family High School friends who had preceded me to I-leaven's portals. George Butler, Vice-president of our class, was summoned to fulfill his position as chief receptionist to all Holy Family graduates. George led me to Peaceful Valley, a rather secluded section of I-leaven, where several of our friends had mansions of unusual beauty. I found there Pat Bancroft, Alice Smith, and Francis Shurtleff. I learned that these saintly members of our class were now in league to aid their classmates still on earth and assure their safe arrival in the Celestial City. The special objects of their prayers were Audrey Duce starring in the tenth revival of Life of Sister May Louise being pre- sented by the Catholic Theatre Guild on Broadway, Sylvia O'Donnell who has just celebrated the golden anniversary of her Iirst stage appearance in The Song of Bernadetteug Lois Harwood the greatest comedienne of the century, and Margaret Connolly, renowned columnist and novelist. From this peaceful realm, George led me along a glorious highway while we reminisced on happy student days. How well we recalled our teachers' advice and promises of prayers as we left the hallowed walls of Holy Family. Suddenly the air was Hlled with exquisite music, and I beheld some old friends in Melody Lane. Shirley Dion, glowing in a sparkling white robe, had Dot Kennedy and Stephen Markey at her side. All chanted the praises of the Eternal God. After receiving a genuine Holy Family welcome, I was informed that their special charge was to guide the musically inclined of our class who still belonged to the Church Militant. They interceded in behalf of Mona Wise, now director of the Holy Family Glee Club: Pat Brodeur, Frank Corre and Thomas Fredette now famous composers: and Ann Foley, recently retired from Metropolitan Opera amid the protests of her millions of listeners. It was George who suggested a stroll down Blue Mantle Avenue and a visit to Our Lady, who was so honored in our high school days, especially during her chosen month of May, and whose life was set before us as a model for our own. She had gathered around her all the Marys of our class as attendants about her sapphire throne. There they performed, not only the duties of Ladies-in-lvaiting, but also pleaded ardently for their colleagues on earth. I,ady's guidance they watched over many successful New Bedfordites of th Class of 1951 including Michael Poczateck, a noted lawyer: Carol and P Norton, owners of the Norton 8: Norton Department Stores, Dan Costa, senator from Massachusetts to the Nation's Capitol: james O'Malley, chief surgeon at St. Luke's Hospitalg Janet Wobecky, author of the famous column. Clothes Make the Woman 3 and George Rayno, city auditor. Mary Ryan interrupted our chat by exclaiming, Go right over to Celestial Park: you must see thc 'X kj? 3. Among them were Mary McCarthy, Mary Ryan, and Mary Boyle. Under our X nhl f other members of our class! 37 L of Aust then St. Ignatius appeared and we greeted him with unboundet joy. VVhy, I have always loved Holy Family Boys and Girls! I have several with me now - Jesuits. Don't you remember how during your Senior year you thought long and hard - and finally chose your vocation? John Halloran, I ack Lowney, and Edward Cabral chose the Jesuits! Mfith a smile, St. Ignatius waved tts on to Celestial Park. ,Jef ,X I -4 nv ' Here Thomas Ryan was the director, wafting golden rays of light to friends on earth. His advisors were our inseparable friends, Dot Entwistle and Ann Lemrise: Doris Allain and Marguerite Ronan: whose special work was to direct matters in the vicinity of New Bedford, the gateway to Cape Cod. They guarded the endeavors of John Pendergast wlto had established a religious article store across the street from the new ultra-modern Holy Family High School. Norma Aubertine was also their special charge. She had built a new church dedicated to our Lady in her old haunts in South Dartmouth. St. Mary's is certainly a credit to NfJYI1IH'S taste and generosity. They obtain heavenly aid for Agnes Redfern and Barbara Higgins, who now direct St. Luke's Hospital where the nurses are under the guidance and care of Alice Grenier. It was indeed a consolation to learn of the accomplislnnents of such good friends and with much regret we left Celestial Park to continue on to Angelic Circle. In this calm, yet busy region, Lorraine Goguen and Jessie Almeida had settled early in life. They were eagerly followed by Florence Xvilliams, Lenora Aguiar and Betty Flood. On this day they were discussing Holy Family pupils now teaching at their Alma Mater. The Sisters of Mercy had prudently appointed Dot Turgeon as principal. She had under her supervision many religious and lay teachers from the Class of '5l. Ronald Carroll and Joan Thomas were in complete charge of the chetnistry division: Claudette Melanson and Dolores Seniow, the English: Jeanne LeCombe, the art classes: Dolores McCormick and Jeanne Lemire head the business department while Ed Sottack as sport director, keeps Holy Fatnily in the front line. As we left Angelic Circle, Estelle Prudhomme extended a cordial invitation to us to return. Mlith a promise to do so we proceeded to Golden Court. Dan Ryan, Leo Roy and Betty VValsh are inhabitants of three lovely homes in Golden Court. As they take a prominent part in social events in Heaven, they were consequently well informed on current happenings on earth. Diligently they guide Fr. Albert Fisher, spiritual director at Holy Family: John Moore, President of the League of Catholic Men: Robert Mello, the popular lecturer on Catholic Authors. They are also concerned with the welfare of Barbara Brenton, a famous fashion designer, and Dolores Perez, secretary to Monsignor Makin, the famous writer and lecturer on the Truths of the Catholic Faith. From here George directed me to Test Tube Terrace, a unique corner inhabited by avid chemistry students of high school days. Here we found Donald LeBlanc, inventor of the only car capable of being driven three ways - front, back and side - who welcomed us with his usual smile. He nodded with pride to introduce his beloved friend. Brian Boucher, perfector of squirtless grapefruit. Standing nearby were Gabriel Folco and Robert Gallagher who while on earth had produced the escalator service for students now attending Holy Family. As we turned to leave up came Eileen Floriowith a cordial invitation to return, since to stay was quite out of the question. Our tour ended. We had accounted for every member of the class of '5l. At the close of my first day in Heaven vivid memories of my high school days filled my mind. What profitable and pleasant days they had been! Could I but return to earth, I would say: Cherish the teachings and lessons learned at Holy Family High, for they are the Signposts leading you safely and surely to the Golden Gates of Heaven! His 13 points were all shots from beyond the bucket. Holy Family expropriated its unblemished League record as powerful Diman Voke snapped the Blue's eight game win streak 42-38. John Halloran was best for Holy Family with 13 points. Fighting mad after the defeat at Diman, Holy Family pounced on Bristol smothering them 65-20. Coach Lowney substituted early and his shock troops led by Bob Halloran. Mike Pocztek, and Bob Makin added the final straws to the camel's back. Holy Family bounced back to the win column at the expense of the Bristol Aggies. lt was the Bltte lk VVhite's first Narry League game in nine years. An easy 53-23 victory was pulled out with Lowney and Halloran spearheading the attack with 12 points each. 'l'he Firehouse Five bit off another victory against Somerset 53-50. Holy Family got off to a flying start leading 30-15 at the hall' and 50-2-I at the -1:30 mark of the fourth quarter. Here H.
