rl-lOSE who have availed themselves of a Catholic education need scan nis page no further, but, those who ave had no introduction to the basic ihilosophy of the whole parochial chool system should read on, to learn hrough an excerpt from the noble vords of wisdom written by Monsignor Nilliam F. Lawlor in the May, l928 ssue of the American Educational Di- lest, the reason for our providing Iatholic school training. In order to eschew the part that the Iatholic school plays in the field of Nmerican education today, we quote he following from Monsignor's article, Developing Essentials of Character in 'arochial Schools, aforementioned: 'The process embraces the cultivation nf the intellect by a course of instruc- 'ion which revolves around religion as ts pivotal center, and the training of 'he will through successive acts con- ductive to the formation of good habits. Nlature study, history, civics, geogra- ahy, literature, mathematics, science, all form integral parts of the curricu- lum, but they are not taught as sub- iects that stand apart-as entities un- related to anything else. Why give Jneself over to a study of nature unless that knowledge so acquired teaches one something concerning nature's God? The Church encourages investigation into the beauties mirrored in creation in order that her children may the more readily appreciate the transcend- ent loveliness residing in beauty un- created. Herein, we of the present join hands with the old which is ever new. Thus is l928 and the years that were gone before linked with the Academic edu- cation of l947 and the years that will follow. . Rav. William F. Lawlor receives the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from Seton Halls College, South Orange, on Juno ll, 1924. I
