Herein lies the theme for the i947 HARVEST-CATHOLIC EDUCATION-TORCH FOR TOLER- ANCE. The torch, held high in the hands of well-equipped instructors, sends forth sparks of mathematics, science, and language, that lead into flames being constantly refueled by the pivotal wick-religion. The searing flame of parochial education leaping forth from the torch embraces every phase of school life, inculcates religious teach- ings through the medium of a wide variety of subjects. Religion is not confined to forty-five minutes of lectures, study, and recitation. lt is the very nucleus of one's trend of thought, it is the ever renewed source of activity. Tolerance, likewise, is ascertained through co- operation of effort under the primary factor-moral training. The spark leaps up, becomes the flame in our Catholic schools today. O'Connor, D.D., Bishop of Newark, recogniz- ing in a young priest, Dr. William F. Lawlor, then assistant Superin- tendent of Schools in the archdiocese of Newark, the resplendent characteristics of priestliness and culture necessary for the success- ful building of the Catholic School system, appointed Dr. Lawlor, superintendent, June, l922. Over the silver years, his colleagues have lived to see this priestly priest hold the torch as he mounts the hill of high achieve- ment, inspiring his co-workers through his own brilliant effort. Thus, do we, the Senior students of Holy Family Academy with joy in his accomplishments and pride in his ability, dedicate our I947 Harvest to Monsignor William F. Lawlor, as the silver crowns the years of his work of education. Ew. Music School Nurse E HERE present to you with pride the hand which holds our symbolic Torch For Tolerance, the faculty, comprising sixteen Sisters of St. Joseph and six lay teachers. To us, laboring in the light of Catholic Education, A Torch For Tolerance, they appear as the hand which holds this lamp aloft, and steadies it, so that it may burn more brilliantly over us. We see the five fingers, firmly implanted around the cone of the torch, stationed as securely as the Catholic principles imparted to us. We see the index finger, pointing the path to a better Catholic life, the middle finger, symbolizing strength, the strongmindedness infused into the students, the ring finger, wearing the ring of Christ: unity, the little finger, regarded as an extra digit, therefore, characterizes the extra- curricular activities of H. F. A. as sponsored, encouraged and nurtured by the faculty. And lastly, balancing these four, we see the thumb--a bul- wark of prayer insuring the strength of our teachers. lt is then, with deep pride that we bow before these holy nuns and lay teachers. May the torch burn brightly in this hand. it NUNZIO PINTAURO JAMES SANTORA, B.S. WASHINGTON rl-lOSE who have availed themselves of a Catholic education need scan nis page no further, but, those who ave had no introduction to the basic ihilosophy of the whole parochial chool system should read on, to learn hrough an excerpt from the noble vords of wisdom written by Monsignor Nilliam F. Lawlor in the May, l928 ssue of the American Educational Di- lest, the reason for our providing Iatholic school training. In order to eschew the part that the Iatholic school plays in the field of Nmerican education today, we quote he following from Monsignor's article, Developing Essentials of Character in 'arochial Schools, aforementioned: 'The process embraces the cultivation nf the intellect by a course of instruc- 'ion which revolves around religion as ts pivotal center, and the training of 'he will through successive acts con- ductive to the formation of good habits. Nlature study, history, civics, geogra- ahy, literature, mathematics, science, all form integral parts of the curricu- lum, but they are not taught as sub- iects that stand apart-as entities un- related to anything else. Why give Jneself over to a study of nature unless that knowledge so acquired teaches one something concerning nature's God? The Church encourages investigation into the beauties mirrored in creation in order that her children may the more readily appreciate the transcend- ent loveliness residing in beauty un- created. Herein, we of the present join hands with the old which is ever new. Thus is l928 and the years that were gone before linked with the Academic edu- cation of l947 and the years that will follow. . Rav. William F. Lawlor receives the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from Seton Halls College, South Orange, on Juno ll, 1924. Here is a secret we seniors would impart, When that day comes, there'll be a sorrow in your We too, when freshmen thought as you do now 'Would the time ever come to make our final l3ow?' Strange as it seems that desire has passed As now we stand-graduates at last, lt isn't so pleasant to whisper farewell To friends, to those memories too numerous to tell. So be happy, keep smiling with a radiant glowj And pity us seniors so reluctant to go from Holy Family. THE EDITORS heart.
