How truly remarkable and singular appears the strenuous work of Your Excellency! But just as admirable is the filial love of your clergy and of your flock towards you. Not only through their ardent affection but also through their great generosity and munlficence they have given you their most sustaining assistance. Their united and fervent efforts have hastened the time of its realization, in very fact, have shortened it by half, especially if one considers the outstanding characteristics of your seminary, which mark it as a magnificent, serviceable, beautiful and well-appointed building, suited to take care of all your needs. As this great day dawns, may We take occasion to offer you Our heartiest congratulations on this undertaking, so happily brought to completion. We regret very much that We are unable to convey in person Our good wishes to you in response to Your Excellency's kind invitation extended with that characteristic deference you have always shown Us. I shall be present in spirit and with me this Sacred Congregation as we contemplate the magnificent ceremony of dedication. We rejoice exceedingly that the Apostolic Delegate of Washington, D.C,, the Most Reverend Amleto G. Cicognani, will be with you to celebrate the solemnities of the day and that the renowned Archbishop of Boston will deliver the festive sermon. Like a crown, you will be surrounded by the illustrious prelates of Milwaukee, Dubuque and the Most Reverend Fulton J. Sheen who was recently raised to the episcopal dignity. We especially note that Your Excellency with significant foresight has invited the entire diocese to be present at the ceremony through the active participation in the liturgy of two thousand high school students and five thousand children and of five thousand women joining their voices in liturgical singing as the Holy Sacrifice is celebrated. It is in this manner that the whole diocese will d t d l gift you have bestowed upon it by providing through your mgnifoxg gzztggalwzzgeg sgicggz s courageous and exhaustive labors such a distinguished and outstanding semina which will be an ideal sanctuary for a hundred and fifty seminarians. I wish to offer Your Excellency, the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of La Crosse my warmest congratulations on the completion of Holy Cross Seminary. I am sure that the Divine Master, the Eternal Priest, will shower this institution with His choicest divine graces so that it may completely fulfill its apostolic purpose. Staffed by carefully selected and specially trained priests of the Diocese of La Crosse, the Seminary will offer facilities to the flower of the youth of you Diocese so that they may progress in piety, di-Scipline and science, to become one day zealous and learned priests in the vineyard of the Lord. The dedication day of Holy Cross Seminary is a jubilant one for all of us, since it brings to completion a work started four years ago -- a work made possible by your generous and selfless cooperation under the guidance of our Bishop. This building, however, is more than its structure, or beauty, or architecture suggests. It expresses your firm desire to make possible for your sons the oppor- tunity of following Christ in the work of the Priesthood among you. It is, then, a representation of your faith, your will, your part in perpetuating Christ's Priesthood in this section. of His Vineyard. We, who will live and work and pray in this Seminary, students and priests alike, will try to be just as generous in our efforts as you have been in yours. Our daily Masses will always contain a remembrance of you, whose sacrifice and devotion h ave made Holy Cross Seminary a reality. Sincerely in the Holy Cross, I S WGTY Rev. Msgrj Thomas F. In general the orientation of the building has been studied to produce as much sunlight 05 4 possible in every portion of the building some tim d ' ' ' ll e uring the day. The theory involved In ff lllltit general plan scheme is new and is very largely the result of long experience with planning instl- ll! tutional buildings, and with learning from direct sources how such buildings work. The reasoning behind the plan scheme is as follows: CU To fit together in a functional pattern im lil the various units, each of which has a distinct usep QD The use of each unit dictated its plan, its size, and its structural disposition, avoiding the common wastefulness of attempting to force three or four types of occupancy into a single symmetrical building of L nr I-I M C M ll Janne: T-'53 Tltn rrontinn 1-J - L..:l.l:-. .I . - - - l ll I' l 1 Eg, ' t I 1 l E FIRST FLOOR PLAN 1 I- ! .
