Holy Cross is but a mirror of its environment. Just as New Orleans is a blend of the old and the new, so is Holy Cross. The story of Holy Cross is the story of an institution bound by tradition in an age when traditions are called meaningless. It is the story of a struggle between innovators and stalwarts, between . modernization and preservation, between in- dividuality and regimentation, and between life and death itself. Yes, the real story of Holy Cross is the search of a landmark of the past for a meaningful place in the highly com- mercialized present, of its hopes and dreams for the future, and of the people in whom these hopes and dreams must be realized. h I . But the friends we made, the times we shared, and those teachers who really cared changed all that. The people at Holy Cross are like a bowl of jambalaya-a melting pot of the Western Hemisphere. During 1972 many of us left our ethnic and intellectual cliques in search of acceptance by others of different, sometimes opposite environments. It was during this time of acceptance and rejection that we really dis- covered the nearness of those from other tribes, other cultures, other worlds, as well as our need to com- municate with them. .
