Vidacovich, Carnival or Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a season of gaiety before the start of Lent each year. Num- berless parades and balls months and weeks before Shrove Tuesday bring tourists by the thousands to our Crescent City. This season cul- minates with the Parade and Ball of Rex on Fat Tuesday which ends at midnight and ushers in the sea- son of penance and reparation. Pictures courtesy of Times Picayune, photographed by A. P. Vidacovieh. H For the past twenty years, Brother Jeremias, C.S.C., has taught here at Holy Cross High School. Born and educated in Chicago, Brother Jeremias became early in life a real Holy Cross Man, for his entire elementary, secondary, and college education was received from the Brothers and Priests of Holy Cross, first at Holy Trinity School in Chicago and later, after a year of religious training at St. Joseph ' s Novitiate, at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. In the summer of 1940, Brother Jeremias was given obedience to teach in St. Joseph ' s High School in South Bend. Due to a polio epidemic that autumn, the school did not open on time in September. As a result, Brother ' s obedience was changed and he came South to begin what was to be an uninter- rupted twenty years in the Crescent City. Having been well-trained in library science by five summer school sessions at the Catholic Univer- sity of America in Washington, DC, Brother Jere- mias has doubled the number of volumes in the school library during his term as librarian. The old library, which was originally in the main building, was transferred in 1955 to the upper school building and the seating capacity was increased from twenty- eight to fifty-six. He has taught English, hist ory and religion hei ' e besides being librarian. For six years. Brother Jeremias served as Assist- ant Prefect in the Junior Dormitory and for the past five years he has been sacristan of the Brothers ' Chapel. Currently, he is archivist for the local com- munity of Holy Cross Brothers and submits news items to different publications periodically. Hard-working, cheerful, helpful and scholarly. Brother Jeremias is a man who does much and says little about his duties which are many. His hobby is good reading and he enjoys sports of all kinds. To Brother Jeremias who has given Holy Cross twenty years of hard, quiet, cheerful work, this 1960 TIGER is gratefully and respectfully dedicated. t DEDICATED TO BROTHER JEREmiflS mVSLIUIlEC C. S. C. The Holy Cross Junior and Senior Sodalities, each restricted to a membership of approxi- mately twenty-five, have won wide recognition among the leading groups of the campus. More than a mere school organization, the Sodality is a Way of Life for outstanding Catholic lead- ers who wish to get close to Christ and Our Lady by means of daily spiritual exercises. The ends of Catholic Action have been achieved through discussion meetings, prominent speakers from all walks of life, the personal apostolate, and various apostolic works. Together with weekly meetings, regular Holy Hours and Days of Recollection, work at local hospitals and old people ' s homes, the Socalities have co-sponsored the Halloween Dance, the Mission Drive in the sale of Christmas Cards, the Sodality Lenten Mission Drive, and a host of other activities. Summer meetings and workshops complete the Sodalist ' s year. Co-moderators of the group are Brother Edward Heller, C.S.C. and Brother Edward Lee, C.S.C. Working together with the homeroom presi- dents was Mr. Richard Corrado, moderator of the organization. Through the tireless efforts the Students Activities Council was right on hand to provide the fine spirit that is associated with Tigerville. The Junior Honor Society, like the National Honor Society, is affiliated with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. This is a branch of the national organization formed to give those worthy underclassmen a chance for national recognition. It is therefore limited to students of the Lower School. This year the membership included fifteen students from the seventh through the ninth grades. Membership in the society is based upon scholarship, leadership, service, and char- acter. To be chosen a member is the highest possible recognition for a Holy Cross Student. This year a new method was used in the selec- tion of students for the National Honor Society. Instead of students making applications as in the past, a panel of faculty members including the Headmaster chose the students worthy of the honor. Holy Cross ' Chaptei ' , called The Bookmen, is one of more than thiee thousand throughout the United States. An installation ceremony is held annually to i-eceive now officers and members, at which time they receive their certificates of membership and their hoods. Our special thanks to Tipery Studio for their hard work. Our gratitude is extended also to all the faculty members whose cooperation made the advertising campaign so successful. To our photographer, Brother Andre, who gave so unselfishly of his time and talent, to our moderator.
