The fifteen members of this group look to Mr. Richard Hogan, their moderator, for leadership and direction. Con- sisting mostly of underclassmen, this school organi- zation continues to look promising for the years to come. Student leadership is supplied by John Cocchiaro, a qualifier inthe state finals for the year. Other key members ofthis organization are Donald Kiley, Philip Orlando, and Matthew Murphy. Another member, Warren Strachan, won the Brooklyn-Queens Decla- mation contest this year. Although lacking in superstars, the Holy Cross Forensics Society continues to be the strong team it has been in past years. 1 if V: 1' ' ,L Drama Club 21 4- cu if 9? Chess Club .QM -N. NATIONAL ' HONOR SOCIETY W S ' a X f A N 1 Brother Robert Russo, C.S.C. Moder ator Excellence in Scholastic Achieve-ment 121 Holy Cross Spiritual Life Shelter lsland Retreat Each year students at Holy Cross are encouraged to put aside a few days away from school and from everyday life to participate in a vital spiritual experi- ence that is most effective for their young life in the teenage world. Under the dynamic direction of Brother Robert Brown, C.S,C., Shelter Island has become a land mark on the map of Long Island for the Holy Cross Student. lt is here that the students experience Christ in many ways, and they come back from Shelter island to share the Light of Christ with their friends, family, and the world that is a part of their daily life. This year over four hundred Holy Cross men have come back from Shelter island with such joy of spirit, peace of mind, and enthusiasm for the things that Christ has given them, that hundreds of other students have taken up the challenge to make the re- treat on their words alone. All the hang-ups and problems that are a part of life - especially the teenage life in particular - are dealt with by the Passionist Fathers at Shelter Island. lt is an experience and a great challenge to set aside a weekend of your own to look into the higher things in life, to see the real meaning of life and to look into yourself, putting things in order to start a new leaf on life. f4w:':9 BROTHER ROBERT BROWN C S C MODERATOR H0 nw- 91 M-'J w A ' x M J 3' N 1 K f 1 f - 4 3 is Q fix is s' Q fx S Q. Its pur- pose is to enlist the aid of the up- perclassmen in the acclimation of freshmen to the school. Each counselor is given the responsibility for nine or ten freshmen. He meets with them, answers questions, tries to solve problems and in general attempts to make the transition from grammar school to high school a little bit easier. Frequently, freshmen seek the aid of those with more knowl- edge and experience than themselves. However, that does not diminish the need for maturity. For what is maturity but the realization that one is not the possessor of all knowledge? No grades are given to Peer Counsel- ors. Awards are not given for outstanding service. One must find the motivation within himself and then convince the freshmen he is worthy of their trust. It is not easy to break the ice. However, the feeling of satisfaction and worth makes the effort meaningful. Students grow in many ways during their high school years. But too often they grow apart. Peer Counseling helps them grow together, and that is what education is all about. Henry Brewer Moderator Assistant Editor Action of Yearbook Day. 138 The 1975 Cross The seventeenth annual CROSS has been presented to the student body through the diligent efforts of editors: John Bonventre and Henry Brewer. Also the moderator, Brother Robert Brown, C.S.C., who supervised this hard working crew. With a great sense of accomplishment we trust you will enjoy this volume. First, we would like to give special thanks to Brother Joseph lVlcDonnell, C.S.C., and the Holy Cross Photo Club, especially to Photo Editor Paul Kampa, Miguel Hernandez, Eric Benvenuti, and Joseph Daly who devoted many strenuous hours after school to develop many pictures for the year- book deadline. Without this fine craftsmanship a fine yearbook is impossible. Also, many thanks to lvlr. Norman Kerker of Delma Studios. The book's fine art work was done by lVlr. Frank Jahn, a commercial artist, a personal friend of Brother Robert Brown, and a devoted man to all the ideals of Holy Cross High School. Q He's got to be kidding, I can't do all that. The Yearbook Day Staff, under the direction of Brother Robert Brown, C.S.C., handled every student in Holy Cross for homeroom pictures. The CROSS Yearbook Day Staff 140 i I John Bonventre Editor-in-Chief Editor's Message It has been the privilege of each CROSS editorto write the farewell message. For me, this honor has special meaning because I am the last of four brothers to attend this fine institution. Fellow Graduates: We have just completed four years of development here at Holy Cross High School. These years have been marked by joys and sorrows, highs and lows, accomplishments and failures. But, no matter how much or how li'ttle we have achieved while here, we are all extremely fortunate to have spent these four crucial years at this Hbest of all places. For many of us, the future means a further preparation in college, for others it means facing the world immediately. But no matter which road we choose, we are one step further because of Holy Cross. Here we have grown intellectually and spiri- tually, and most importantly we have grown in our ability to accept responsibility with maturity. The road ahead is long and trying, but if we keepin mind what this school has taught us, we will indeed be well-prepared. We leave through the portals of Holy Cross for the last time. We are proud that we have shown the ca- pacity and the desire to achieve graduation. And yet we are saddened and perhaps a little frightened that we are departing from the security of its walls. We have much to learn, much to experience, and much to accomplish. The challenges which the future is sure to bring will require wisdom and fortitude. But with the foundation that Holy Cross has built for us, the guidance our families have afforded us, and the grace of Almighty God, we shall succeedllll u... u' Q' n' .n' ,u ' Q .1 , u' a' .o' 's' .u .n u ' u u o u ' s u ,s u o IVIr.
