First of all, the Department strives to culti- vate in the student a clear and logical approach to truth, be it religious, sociological or scientific truth, and the cor- rect expressions of these truths in the spoken and written word. The second objective of the department is the ma- turation of the aesthetic sense in the student through a fuller appreciation of literature and a participation in a creative writing program. The department takes a hand in and encourages student participation in such extracurricular activities as the Lance, forensic activities such as oratory and debate, the school play and the spring musical. A special addition to the department in the past year is the reading program, under the chairmanship of Mr. Lipp, which features a complete course in reading com- prehension and speed rate building.
