LA TIN The Holy Cross Latin Department has reached its greatest proportions this year. There are sixteen Latin classes accommodating approximately 650 students. The Sophomores and Freshmen have six classes each, while the Seniors and Juniors have two classes each. There are six instructors comprising the Latin Department under the direction of Br. Francis Regis, department chairman. To aid these instructors a remedial Latin program has been established. junior and Senior tutors were assigned by Br. William Babbitt to Freshman and Sophomore students needing help after each student's individual problems had been diagnosed. These tutoring sessions take place after school hours. Also as an added incentive and for the promotion of the study of Latin, a national Latin exam is administered during the Spring of the school year. In the 1957-58 exam, our first such test, 400 Sophomores and juniors participatedg 39 students received awards. This year the examination will be taken by 600 students including Freshmen. With this extensive program for the Latin scholars, we don't expect to hear that Latina est difficiles! The following, who also teach in this department, are pictured elsewhere: Brothers Francicus, john Capistran, and Matthew. I8

JOHN FOGE B.S.Educ., Fordham University M.A., Brooklyn College English 2 Physical Education Assistant Freshman Football Coach Track Coach In the modern scientific age, in which the physical sciences and mathematics have achieved an increasingly dominant position, the English Department of Holy Cross High School holds two aims or purposes to be of the utmost importance. First of all, the Department strives to culti- vate in the student a clear and logical approach to truth, be it religious, sociological or scientific truth, and the cor- rect expressions of these truths in the spoken and written word. The second objective of the department is the ma- turation of the aesthetic sense in the student through a fuller appreciation of literature and a participation in a creative writing program. The department takes a hand in and encourages student participation in such extracurricular activities as the Lance, forensic activities such as oratory and debate, the school play and the spring musical. A special addition to the department in the past year is the reading program, under the chairmanship of Mr. Lipp, which features a complete course in reading com- prehension and speed rate building.
