LA TIN The Holy Cross Latin Department has reached its greatest proportions this year. There are sixteen Latin classes accommodating approximately 650 students. The Sophomores and Freshmen have six classes each, while the Seniors and Juniors have two classes each. There are six instructors comprising the Latin Department under the direction of Br. Francis Regis, department chairman. To aid these instructors a remedial Latin program has been established. junior and Senior tutors were assigned by Br. William Babbitt to Freshman and Sophomore students needing help after each student's individual problems had been diagnosed. These tutoring sessions take place after school hours. Also as an added incentive and for the promotion of the study of Latin, a national Latin exam is administered during the Spring of the school year. In the 1957-58 exam, our first such test, 400 Sophomores and juniors participatedg 39 students received awards. This year the examination will be taken by 600 students including Freshmen. With this extensive program for the Latin scholars, we don't expect to hear that Latina est difficiles! The following, who also teach in this department, are pictured elsewhere: Brothers Francicus, john Capistran, and Matthew. I8
