The first energetic students had invaded the building and the saga of Holy Cross was underway. The following school year 585 new Freshmen joined with the 512 Sophomore returnees to raise the total enrollment to 899. This was the year that witnessed a clever Musical Revue and the first Band Concert at which the band wore their new uniforms. Local sports fans were beginning to sit up and take notice of a new potential in the area that predicted future changes in local sports patterns. But the most outstanding event of the year was the formal dedication of the school building on May -l. NV, by Auxiliary Bishop john gl. Boardman of the Diocese of Brooklyn. This was indeed an inspiring and dignified occasion. Iinrollment for September WV topped 1,200 and the new juniors were anxious to wear their fine class rings. Now many of the science laboratories, previously unused, were put into operation as Physics and other important-sounding classes began to appear on the curriculum. Varsity teams were now distinguished from JV's and lfreshmeng our athletes had arrived, Christmas brought with it the thrill of the first unforgettable junior Prom, set in the icy blue wonder of a transformed gym. Llpperclassmen'' became increasingly aware of diagnostic tests, College Boards, and a new sound to the word college XVhat had appeared to be a bursting-atethe-seams the year before seemed as nothing the following September when the school opened its doors to 1,344 stu- dents. The history of this past year is still before our eyes in clear focus. Those things in it which time and distance may dim, this yearbook hopes to preserve in a tangible form as a source of future enjoyment for all Holy Cross Men, es- pecially those fortunate and privileged four hundred who can proudly claim that they were the First, A11xiff.n'y Bitlrofr 101111 1. In our minds, however, he seemed to be more than that title expresses. Brother John had a vast amount ot work to accomplish in the direction of Holy Cross, but most times when we passed the main corridor, we saw him smilingly checking up on the situation. At the end of the school day we again saw him observing the students filing out ol' the school building. Not many ot us counted the times he came into our classrooms for IQ Tests, for re- placement of a teacher, even for teaching us Algebra. Brother john always had the welfare of the students and of the school uppermost in his mind. Many times we heard him speak to us not only on our accomplishments, but also on our failings. Always, however, he spoke with a firm con- lidence in the students, and his concern for their welfare came out in his voice. Our memory of Holy Cross will always be linked with our memory of Brother john. Ilurfiuzfif if xl.JrZwrr ii. f 'AP p-wi-M,-nn., BROTHER RUDOLPH LACAS, C.S.C. LA TIN The Holy Cross Latin Department has reached its greatest proportions this year. There are sixteen Latin classes accommodating approximately 650 students. The Sophomores and Freshmen have six classes each, while the Seniors and Juniors have two classes each. There are six instructors comprising the Latin Department under the direction of Br. Francis Regis, department chairman. To aid these instructors a remedial Latin program has been established. junior and Senior tutors were assigned by Br. William Babbitt to Freshman and Sophomore students needing help after each student's individual problems had been diagnosed. These tutoring sessions take place after school hours. Also as an added incentive and for the promotion of the study of Latin, a national Latin exam is administered during the Spring of the school year. In the 1957-58 exam, our first such test, 400 Sophomores and juniors participatedg 39 students received awards. This year the examination will be taken by 600 students including Freshmen. With this extensive program for the Latin scholars, we don't expect to hear that Latina est difficiles! First of all, the Department strives to culti- vate in the student a clear and logical approach to truth, be it religious, sociological or scientific truth, and the cor- rect expressions of these truths in the spoken and written word. The second objective of the department is the ma- turation of the aesthetic sense in the student through a fuller appreciation of literature and a participation in a creative writing program. The department takes a hand in and encourages student participation in such extracurricular activities as the Lance, forensic activities such as oratory and debate, the school play and the spring musical. A special addition to the department in the past year is the reading program, under the chairmanship of Mr. Lipp, which features a complete course in reading com- prehension and speed rate building. For those students who plan to continue in science or engineering, it provides a solid foundation upon which they can build their future careers. For those interested in other fields, it gives them a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the world around them. The curriculum has been designed to provide the fundamentals of the three main fields of science: life science, physical science, and earth science. For this purpose, courses in biology, physics, and chemistry are offered. Recognizing the fact that education is also extracurricular, the Science Department has established several clubs as a supplement to the classrooms. Science is an effort to see as deeply as possible into the nature of the physical world, to understand the relationships among the phenomena of nature. Today science is one of the most exciting of human activi- ties because of the rapidity with which it is providing new insights and affecting human culture. The cur- riculum of the Science Department reflects an appreciation of this fact. The following teachers of General Science, who are pictured elsewhere are: Bro. joseph Dunne and Bro. Thomas Burns. Full consideration is given to the various needs of individual groupings of students in the school. For those who wish to enter some scientific field in their college studies, a regular preparatory curriculum of four years of high school mathematics has been set up. However, a new innovation also comes into being in the Senior year. This is an extra class in mathematics, for the scientific stu- dent, and is a survey course in Analytic Geometry and Differential and Integral Calculus. This course lays the groundwork upon which is built the more advanced mathematical and scientific prin- ciples advanced in the college curriculum. Those entering college for a normal liberal arts course are also prepared, not only in course re- quirement, but with a true knowledge and understanding of the logic and structure of the.mathe- matical systems. Since its inception, the Department of Eine Arts has endeavored to promote the ex- pression of talent within the field of art. The introduction of students to the various media and techniques incorporated in arts and ceramics has been the principal aim of the department. The classes in art are separated into two divisions, a beginners and an advanced pro- gram. Those in the beginners program are taught the basic fundamentals, and work with a variety of mediadpencil, pen and ink, pastels, tempera and water color. Ceramics and 'working with oil paints are the concentrated occupations of the advanced students. They are fortunate to have complete ceramic facilities at their disposal. Through the department, posters to advertize various activities in the school are pro- duced and displayed. Although Mechanical Drawing is more properly situated in the Mathematics Depart- ment, it has been incorporated into this section of the yearbook because of the nature of the skill it employs, and the patient, artistic demands it imposes on its students. NDUSTRIAL ARTS Under the direction of Brother Thomas Burns, CSC., and his assistant, Brother joseph Dunne, CSC., the Industrial Arts Department provides an education in the use and care of wood, and machine and metal working tools. Both Brothers have received intensive training in the field of Industrial Arts at Indiana State Teachers College. Since its inauguration in September of 1957, the school shop has steadily grown to its present value of nearly thirty thousand dollars. Its equipment consists of the finest precision lathes and ranges down to the smallest hand tools. This year the shop was furnished with two printing presses, thus extending the Industrial Arts program to include printing for those who elect it. Shop courses are available to juniors and Seniors only. Each class has a capacity of nineteen students. The boys start out with fundamentals, learning the correct use of machine and hand tools, and gradually work up to difficult and rewarding projects. The shop plays a major role in the fixit activities around the school, including prop building for school plays, and general maintenance of school property. The members of the Lance enjoy this realization in the expression of self through the written word. They know the role of the craftsman who chisels his thoughts from the crude bulk of complexity to the refined lines of simplicity. To write is to be generous. It is the extension of the individual to the many. EDITORIAL STAFF: J, Meehan, Associate Editori Fa. O'Cull:1gl1an, lferiture Editor: V, Burger, Co-Editorg R. johnson, Co-Editor. As freshmen Holy Cross unveiled a 'Q fine basketball team under Coach Walter Rooney. Not only did the boys meet with suc- cess on the court, but the crowds came and took them to their hearts. The staunch and increasing band of rooters caught the eye of the press and aroused the interest of other schools. ' Visitors to the Holy Cross Gym shook their heads in amazement at the crowds, the enthusiasm, and the competitive, sportsmanlike spirit. In the spring of 1956, came the first football tryouts and practice under Coach Begley and Stetter. Varsity football was introduced in 1957 and last season the Knights were the Cinderella Team of the year as they pulled upset after upset to gain a second place tie in the Catholic High School Football League. Basketball kept pace under Coach jim Connors and baseball under Don Smith and Brother Paul Malich. Track, golf, tennis and intramurals in basketball and bowling are all in full swing as the first graduating class comes marching over the horizon. Holy Cross has had a most successful start in sports. It has been due to the foresight of the Brothers of Holy Cross, and in particular to Brother logues, our Athletic Director. It has been due also to the willingness and spirit of its students in practicing to develop perfection, to the coaches who made them seek perfection as a desirable virtue, to the public who has supported Holy Cross, to the press which has spread the message, and to our neighboring schools who have played us to fill a schedule, but came back again in hope of absorbing some of that Holy Cross spirit and to avenge a defeat. . 1 ,,, Z -imma f 1 1.-was 4!.:Ki'qa 1 ' ff ff , jvf .A -. 0 421- f 7 f, ,V ' ' fflqf V f ,ff 4 1 5 what 3 f f1 3,, S yi.1f7fv f Ofvfvnxift jlzlqt'-.flfblttlic DciAf7.Jl'fN1tf1I Pi':'.wm1sl.' In 1954, the news of .1 Catholic Boys High School in Queens prompted ii group ot' women in the area to organize a Guild under the direction Of BYOUICY MLILIIUS U'Mz1llCy. Cf.S.C. The objective is clearly stated in Article ll ot' the By-Laws: The purpose of the Holy Cross Women's Guild ot Queens is to promote and extend the interest of the Holy Cross High School by assisting said school in the pursuit of its educational, cultural, spiritual and charitable endeavors. These past tive years have witnessed the membership growth of the Guild from .1 small group of six pioneers to the present 1,000 active members, making it the largest women's organization in Queens. XVorl-:ing together for the well being of every Holy Cross student, the school and the Holy Cross XVomen's Guild have found that a great deal can be accomplished towards the success of students by mutual cooperation and understanding of their problems and difficulties.
