It is largely up to the laity to further the apostolic service of the Church and to adapt its apostolate to the chang- ing Ili-:f?flS of the age. Our goal, of such great con- wfzicfz sequence, entails many distinct challenges. Whatever our state in life, We are expected to be competent leaders, ever aware of personal re- sponsibilities. With firm convictions as the foun- dation of a zealous apostolate, we, as Christians, in order to live up to our name, can never cease to be apostles. If these challenges are to be met, the laity must take it upon themselves to perfect the essen- tial qualities of true Christianity. Our considera- tion of others must be permeated with charity and mutual respect, our life with true devotion and generosity, our apostolate with zeal and persever- ance. Youth is an essential part of the laity. We, as students of Holy Cross, are presented with the many challenges of the lay a ostolate. It is only P by both recognizing and accepting these chal- lenges that We will be true Christians. .jjzaez lijgdllgggllgfed ll Chridfian. olgacleradila . . . Possessing such valuable qualities as natural administrative ability and sincere interest in each pupil, Sister Margaret Marie, C.S.C., has contributed much to Holy Cross's efficiency and spirit. Previously, Sister Margaret Marie was Dean of Studies both at St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana, and at Dunbarton College, Washington, D. C., supervisor of schools in the Eastern Province of the Sis- ters of the Holy Cross and Provincial Su- perior. Our assistant principal, for the past six years, has also been Superior of Holy Cross Convent. In her frequent relations with the stu- SISTER MARGARET MARIE, C.S.C. dents, Sister has demonstrated her genuine concern for, and understanding of the in- dividual, as Well as a desire for the general betterment of the school. Certainly, stu- dents will later appreciate Sister's many endeavors to acquaint them With the ad- vantage of a sound, extensive education and to offer such a program to them. Faculty and student body alike join in a spirit of deep gratitude for our assistant principal. To Sister Margaret Marie, in appreciation for her many great sacrifices and contributions, We, the students of Holy Cross, wish to dedicate our 1963 edition of The Lance. His is the duty of guiding tlfe students through both the spiritual and the scholastic achievements of the year. With his priestly faculties, Father has brought us closer to God, especially through his offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on First Fridays and through his words of advice and assurance. Having upheld the high standards which were initiated with the entrance of the first class at Holy Cross, Father has encouraged both the faculty and the student body to a genuine reali- zation of personal responsibility. with the welfare of the school foremost in his mind, our principal strives continually to improve the facilities and expand the curri- culum, thus keeping up with current educational trends. As in the past, our assistant principal has maintained her constant and untiring efforts in fulfilling the many tasks for which she is respon- sible. Among her duties are those of scheduling students' curricula, offering practical advice and encouragement, and substituting for teachers during absence. Certainly, as an educational ad- visor, Sister Margaret Marie has directed the students to discover the opportunities for true success in life. Having as her objective the furtherance of sound, extensive education, Sister, in outlining students' courses, has endeavored to uphold this ideal. Her guidance in these matters is intended to develop well-educated persons. This past year Sister has continued to concern herself chiefly with maintaining high education- al standards, characteristic of her deep interest in the welfare of our school. Their methods of instruction and genuine interest in their respec- tive subjects urge a greater educational develop- ment in the student. Characteristic of our teaching staff is the spirit of self-sacrifice, exemplified in their at- tending various supplementary classes- for the greater benefit of the student as well as for their own personal enrichment. Furthermore, many faculty members act as moderators for the newly- formed activity clubs. Another of their recently undertaken responsibilities is the sponsoring of the monthly student assemblies. While displaying various athletic abilities and good sportsmanship, our fearless faculty again participated in the annual faculty-varsity basketball game, and soon after, were handed their second defeat of the year by our alumni. In our school, the general atmosphere of friendly yet respectful relationship existing be- tween the faculty and students allows a liberal opportunity for the enriching exchange of ideas. To our faculty we owe unflinching gratitude, cu- operation and loyalty. Their competent services enable students and faculty alike to work in an atmosphere conducive to both learning and study. In the office we see our secretaries continual- ly at work. Among their various duties is that of maintaining correct financial and scholastic rec- ords. Besides attending to official business, the office workers aid the students by issuing tardy slips and medical passes, by maintaining a lost and found department, and by announcing events and notices over the P.A. system. To our maintenance staff fall the responsi- bilities related to the upkeep of all school prop- ertyg they recondition the football field, set up the gym bleachers, and prepare the auditorium for assembly programs. In Our Quest for Happiness we learn of the means of man's sanctification, of God's creative and re- demptive love and of the gratitude and love we owe God in return. In the light of a better understanding of the Vatican Council, classes have shown a renewed interest in the cause of world unity. This has been accomplished through both individual and group projects. We have now been given the privilege of as- sisting at Mass once a week as well as on First Fridays and during the annual Easter and senior retreats. Also, during school hours, students have the added opportunity of daily visits to the school chapel and of confession during the lunch hours. During the freshman and sophomore years, students become acquainted with the opportuni- ties made available to them by this department. As part of the program, students attend weekly guidance and courtesy classes and participate in both the Mooney and Kuder-Preference tests. The national publication, Your Future Occu- pation, made available to juniors and seniors this year for the first time, has much to offer in the way of helpful career guidance. In addition to having personal interviews which are given to all students, juniors participate in the Flanagan Aptitude .Classification Tests. They are also ad- ministered many optional tests, such as the P.S.A.T. and the National Merit Scholarship Exam. The senior student, realizing the importance of his previous years under the direction of the Guidance Department, completes the program with his participation in the Iowa Test of Edu- cational Development and the optional New jer- sey State Employment Test. b Because students are always interested in seeking information concerning prospective studies or future occupations, the guidance office remains continually active and is always open to the individual with a personal problem. 1' R ,H S ? Cy fo jeadufe of Courses at Holy Cross are directed toward the development of individuals well-prepared for future positions of leadershipg its music course is in keeping with that idea. With guidance, the student explores the wide range of the musical world. Reviewing the lives and masterpieces of musicians, the freshman re- ceives much background and insight, invaluable to his cultural future. The study of American folk songs, for instance, gives him a realization of the richness of his own cultural heritage. Through the study of theory and orchestral make-up, the student acquires the knowledge sufficient both to appreciate the music of every- day living, and to encourage further develop- ment which he may find in one of the several extracurricular activities. The department, by creating a suitable atmosphere, opens to its pupils a new field of interest, conferring at least a greater appreciation of music. However, art courses are not available to freshmen alone. Upperclassmen are offered courses in drawing, painting, ceramics and com- mercial art. Students may also participate in various contests such as the annual state-wide senior scholarship competition for painting and sculpture. The ceramics class appeals to the creative student who enjoys working with moist clay and designing objects by hand. Commercial art, a very popular course, acquaints the student with the latest methods of effective advertising and correct stage settings. Profici- ency in grammar and writing composes one of the means of forming the expression. Special stress is laid on the appraisal of cul- ture during the junior and senior courses. Con- centrating on the ability to express thoughts orally, the speech course, part of the sophomore curriculum, prepares us for future situations re- quiring poise and speaking skills. For the stimulation of their classes, teachers obtain many periodicals and paperback books to use as study aids and encourage the informal class presentation of the various forms of liter- ature. Moreover, the religion, history, and Eng- lish departments have compiled a common read- ing list, thus promoting a more unified ap- proach to learning. During the month of November, as part of the school's newly-established assembly program, the English Department presented a synopsis of American poetry. Through our extensive English program, the student learns to enrich his manner of living and personal expression, thus developing true character. A significant effort to surmount the interna- tional language barrier has been the aim of our Language Department. Each of the three lan- guage courses. offered includes not only a study of the language itself, but also an elementary knowledge of the history and culture of the foreign country. Available to the language student, either through library facilities or through class sub- scriptions, are several newspapers and magazines of general interest. Language clubs this year have been re-organ- ized so as to promote a livelier interest in the language itself as a means of enjoyment. Also, as part of the Christmas assembly, the students in the Language Department sang carols in the respective languages of French, German, and Latin, thus encouraging a more active apprecia- tion of foreign cultures. As part of the language program, students are encouraged to attend various conventions, one of which is the junior Classical League rally where annually a large delegation of Latin stu- dents participate. The highlight of the year was the enlarge- ment of our language lab to 30 booths, symbolic of the Language Department's effort to develop the abilities of the individual. Instead of the first year general science course of previous years, a new program of physical science has been introduced. With the funda- mental knowledge acquired from this course, the student is enabled to further his understand- ing in the biology, chemistry and physics classes. For the fourth year, through much enthus- iastic effort in the annual Delaware Valley Science Fair sponsored by the Franklin Insti- tute, our students demonstrated their growing Page 44 interest in the field of science. Several outstand- ing students of the upperclasses have attended the advanced education seminars, also sponsored by the Franklin Institute. Included among the specialized courses offered were those of ad- vanced chemistry, physics and astronomy. Here, through familiarization with the various aspects of these supplementary studies, the students are better prepared to meet the challenge of college science programs. Among the many rewarding experiences for our science enthusiasts this year was the annual New jersey Catholic Round Table of Science Examination, encompassing both science and math. It is here that the individual is made aware of the proficiency he has acquired through our extensive science program. ff f , ,u4W77'9Z,?i 7 S w ww, ii IN 3C HISTORY class, Theresa Elmendorf, Wall' McCollum ANNE CHAU-ENDER AND DOFOHIY Farrell Sfudy G Regina Nafanni and Phil Mayer examine 'lhe Congressional char? relaling 'ro 'their sfudles in Economics. Besides attending regular classes, students may participate in interesting educational activi- ties related to Social Studies, including the an- nual United Nations and Voice of Democracy Contests. During the month of October, for ex- ample, our Social Studies students were shovm an excellent film, Nightmare in Red , which exposed the dangers of Communism in society. Also, a number of our seniors and juniors visited the United Nations and the Stock Exchange in New York. Commercial students are taught shorthand, typing, bookkeeping. advertising, business law and secretarial office practice. The latter, in pre- paring the advanced business student for secre- tarial work, provides opportunities for him to integrate the instructions in his commercial courses as well as in business English, personality development and familiarization with the use of office equipment. Again this year, our business department was represented by two seniors at the monthly meet- ings of the junior National Office Management Association QNOMAQ, held at designated busi- ness firms of the Camden area. Page 56 Ofhciaf Conafifufion The Holy Cross Student Council has proven itself a competent organization for communica- tion between the administration and the student body. This year the Council followed the worthy traditions established by its predecessors while also introducing several new services. All regular school dances, including the annual junior Din- ner Dance and Senior Ball, were managed by the Student Council. In addition, the Council has been given the responsibility of introducing as- semblies and pep rallies. The outstanding achievement of the year was the formulation of a constitution governing the actions of the Student Council. Under the guid- ance of their moderator, the members drafted a set of by-laws for their own use and for that of their successorsg this achievement is a significant part of our school history. Following the rules of parliamentary pro- cedure, the Student Council members worked ef- fectively to present the views and suggestions of the students. The year was characterized by effi- cient organization: in outlining duties and re- sponsibilities, and in processing suggested ideas into practical action. It has continued to honor those students outstanding for their traits of character, scholarship, leadership and service. Initiated last year, the stamp drive, for the benefit of the missions, again proved a great suc- cess. A trunk of supplies was also shipped by the society to be of service to missionaries. A significant contribution to the school was the recently-adopted Student Tutoring Program. The club also introduced the sponsoring of a scholarship fund to be available to those taking advanced courses. A few members of the Honor Society were selected to present the October assembly on the Vatican Council. This was the first in the series of student assemblies. Also, at the Knights of Columbus Track Meet, it placed second with a total of 38 points. Daily exercises toughen the cindermen for their various events. These include sprinting, hurdling, jumping, hurling and relay contests. This year the members of Holy Cross's squad once again pit their strength against the rigors imposed by many weeks of training in a sport which presents a challenge to almost any form of physical ability. Although this was their first season of varsity competition, the outcome of their efforts proved surprisingly successful. However, due to inexperience, they bowed to Madison during the first round of the New jersey State Tournament. It is through much rigorous practice that our team, with the consequent gain in experience, has greatly improved. With the help of their coach, Mr. Mfiley Pickett, it now remains the team's challenge to maintain the reputation they have established. Unfamiliar faces, schedules, bells: becoming accustomed to the Holy Cross routine proves to be the foremost task of the incoming fresh- man. As the 'students are familarized with the pattern of high school life, they encounter the difficulties of pursuing more advanced studies and the challenges of maintaining a high level of school spirit. Freshmen are soon made aware of their per- sonal responsibility to live up to the standards of performance demanded by high school teach- ers. Part of the fundamental program are the required courses of music and art, distinctive for the freshman class. As the student progresses, the realization that he forms an 'integral part of the school encourages him to contribute to the many pos- sible aspects of intellectual and spiritual edu- cation at Holy Cross. Throughout the year, the freshman demonstrates his active interest in school-sponsored events such as the magazine and candy drives. Part of the added re- sponsibility rests in his new privilege of elect- ing four representatives to the Student Coun- cil. A fuller opportunity for personal expression is granted to him through increased participa- tion in school activities. In the new extracur- ricular organizations, the 260 sophomores may develop their talents and inclinations. Compulsory in the second year is the course in public speaking, an aid to those who wish to use their new opportunity for expression to the best of their ability. New duties and rights, combining to form a more mature outlook in the student, find an outlet in the Kuder Prefer- ence Test which urges the sophomore to examine his various interests. Common aims and efforts work to encour- age all sophomores in the direction of intel- lectual and spiritual fulfillment. They realize the increasing importance of their studies and are thus led to a fuller growth of character. Distinctive for third year students is the Driver Education course, now in its second year. Of special in- terest this year is the fact that ten outstanding juniors were selected to participate in the ad- vanced placement course in mathematics, newly initiated at Holy Cross. Moreover, as juniors, they now become eligi- ble for admission to such organizations as the National Honor Society and the National Busi- ness Honor Society. Also, due to greater repre- sentation, they have a more active participation in the Student Council. Eagerly do the girls anticipate the privilege of wearing maroon blazers and proudly do the juniors accept their class ringsg all await the greater responsibilities and honors of the senior year. Constantly have we tried to develop the essential qualities of good judg- ment, consideration of others and perseverance. Now, as seniors, the great challenge is before us. It is up to each of us to meet and accept our challenge. realizing that to every privilege be- longs a responsibility which we can never shirk. To be idle is something that cannot be under- stood in one who has the soul of an apostle. Christ's apostolate is for the young and old, the intelligent and the average, the rich and poor. We cannot neglect our challenge - for our Peter Joseph Alesi IOS Forest Road, Moorestown - Our Lady ot Good Counsel: FBLA 4 Rita Elizabeth Armstrong l32 West Center Avenue. Maple Shade - Our Lady of Perpetual Help: Art Club 4 Page l36 example, be it good or bad, will influence the world. Our purpose then is to witness the full Chris- tian life: this demands an unswerving fidelity to Christ,-detachment from sin and self, and un- limited charity toward all. Our ultimate goal in life is the salvation of all men, the transforming of this world into God's world. In following this challenge we might well heed the words of a true twentieth century apostole, Dr. Tom Dooley: The only good reason for our existence is not what we are going to get out of life, but-what we are going to put into it.
