The CllCl'l6llllSt1C Congress Ex ery hugh school graduate has a host of pleas ant memorles many of whrch ire collected durlng the final year It IS then wrth joyful hearts that we wrll remember that ey ent peculrar to our drocese nn the autumn of 1947 The hundredth annnersary of the found1ng of the Drocese of Buffalo was par tlcularly drstmgulshed by a dedlcatlon of all 1ts eyents to Our Blessed Lord rn the Holy Eucharlst Each actnlty was marked by the conscxousness of the Drvxne Presence and by a sense of gratrtude for the century completed Our drrect partrcnpatron rn thrs momentous occa sxon began at the srngmg of xespers by the com blned choxrs of Catholrc schools on Tuesdry Sep tember Z5 Hrs Emrnence uan Gualbert Cardmal Guex ara of Peru presrded Although he was only one of the seyen cardrnals present ln Buffalo for the Congress we were rmpressed by the splendor of the ceremony After yespers we marched from Crue Stadlum to Memorral Audrtorrum for a sectlonal meetrng of youth followed by a Holy Hour Today we thought we had seen eyerythmg Nothlng short of an atom bomb explosron rn our mrdst could agam amaze us Not only had we ghmpsed the prrncely pomp of the Church but also we had seen such nllustrrous personages as The Most Reverend Rlchard Cushrng DD Archbrshop of Boston Rexerend ames Keller MH Most Reserend Leo Leech DD CD Brshop of Harrnsburg and Frank Leahy of Notre Dame That mght at the general assembly wrth Hrs Emrnence Irancrs Cardrnal Spellman presrdmg three famous men spoke oseph Scott 80 year old Los Angeles lawyer Rt Reyerend Monsrgnor I'ulton Sheen and Most Reyerend Rlchard Cushrng The next mormng we began a day surpassmg 1ts predecessor rn magmhcence We were present at the chlldrens Pontlhcal Low Mass celebrated by Brshop Glbbons of Albany wxth Cardmal Spellman presrdmg As the trme for Holy Com munnon approached xt seemed as rf an endless l1ne of prlests each carrymg a crborlum filed onto the stadium field and thence to appomted places among the 40 000 commumcants Each prrest was assrsted by an altar boy rn scarlet purple or black cassock addmg to the profusron ot color already attendant upon the scene Atter thrs rnsprrmg cscnt the youthful crowd dlspersed Mmy went to new the mussron C.Xl1ll'3lfS rn Memorral Audltorrum The xrsrt wrs more llke an CkPCLlll'lO11 wrth the hfty three fCllL,lOL1S orders represented One could haye spent an entlre day there and stlll haxe mrssed some of the mterestrng booths Anythmg could be seen from an rgloo to a natne Afrrcan hut and from a boa constrrctor skln to an lndlan dance 'lhe good I'6llg,lOL1S were kept busy by numerous questions asked by the lI'1qLllSlflNL public Spare tlme w IS e1s1ly spent rn th rt hall of currosrtres educatlon and Inspiration 'Ihursday September 25 found many of us at the womens Pontrhcal Hrgh Mass sung by Hrs Emlnence Samuel A Cardlnal Strltch at Memorial Audxtorrum An eloquent sermon was preached by the Most Rexerend Alexandre Vachon DD of Ottawa After Mass Hrs Emrnence uan Gualbert Cardmal Guex ara presented to the people of the drocese relrcs of two Peruuan samts S Rose of Lrma and T0f1blO de Mogroy ejo Brshop O Hara gracrously accepted the beautxful relrquary for the drocese say1ng that we shall always feel a close bond of frrendshrp wrth the Catholres of Lrma In the afternoon all the farthful grouped accordrng to parrshes conxerged upon the Dela ware Park Meadow where the great Congress h rd 1ts solemn closxng All seyen Cardrnals were there representxng the Umted States Canada Australla Great Brrtarn Brazrl and Peru Present also were countless archbrshops brshops mon slgnorr prrests brothers and srsters All attentlon was focused upon a great altar constructed at one end of the meadow From th1s pomt followmg Benedrctron of the Most Blessed Sacrament Cardrnal Spellman gaxe the hnal blessrng He ended the Congress as he had begun rt urgrng an rncrease rn prayers for peace The magmtude solemnxty and yet the humrlrty whrch characterlzed the entlre celebratlon seemed even more marxelous rn that magmflcent clrmax Thrs Centenmal w1ll remarn wxth us not merely as the most colorful spectacle wlthln our memorles but certainly as one of the gr atest manlfestatnons of falth durmg our lrxes To Hrs Excellency our beloyed Bnshop O Hara we express agarn our deep apprecratron Bern Arsrs.
