THE SHIELD f mx 0 U H 0 F Qs' X 547: uffim C999 Since the time of St. Dominic the Dominican shield has been a sign of truth, penance, and purity, all signified in its colors of black and white. The shield, a masterpiece in itself, has a story behind it. During the middle ages there was a need for insignias as a means of deter- mining friend from foe. It was because of this need for identification that families and organizations adopted personal seals and coats of arms. The Dominican shield was designed not only as a means of identity but also to symbolize the work of the Dominican Order. This shield, one of the oldest and finest, is divided into eight parts by the center cross. These eight parts represent the eight points of a compass, indicating the world wide mission of the Dominican Order. A scroll, which borders the eight parts of the insignia, contains the motto of the Dominican Order, To praise, to bless, and to preach, Laudare, Benedicere, Praedicaref' Having had the privilege of being taught by Dominican Sisters during our years at high school, we have chosen the Dominican shield, which we all love and respect, as the theme throughout this 1959 Angelican. 3 2'-'inf : THE DOMINICAN ORDER
