The shield, a masterpiece in itself, has a story behind it. During the middle ages there was a need for insignias as a means of deter- mining friend from foe. It was because of this need for identification that families and organizations adopted personal seals and coats of arms. The Dominican shield was designed not only as a means of identity but also to symbolize the work of the Dominican Order. This shield, one of the oldest and finest, is divided into eight parts by the center cross. These eight parts represent the eight points of a compass, indicating the world wide mission of the Dominican Order. A scroll, which borders the eight parts of the insignia, contains the motto of the Dominican Order, To praise, to bless, and to preach, Laudare, Benedicere, Praedicaref' Having had the privilege of being taught by Dominican Sisters during our years at high school, we have chosen the Dominican shield, which we all love and respect, as the theme throughout this 1959 Angelican. 3 2'-'inf : THE DOMINICAN ORDER ..r e icafion 2' 1 l i GQ if 'Win REVEREND A. SHAUGHNESSY Pastor of St. Alphorrsus and Director of Holy Angels, we the graduates of 1959 dedicate to you, Father Shaughnessy, this Angelican in gratitude for your unceasirrg generosity and aid in both our spiritual and temporal welfare. 4 5'7U4 F'-IFTEENTH AVENUE N.W. SEATTLE 7, WASHINGTON My dear Graduates: I congratulate each and every one of you on graduating from Holy Angels. I sincerely hope and pray that you will not only be loyal to your Alma Mater but you will always value the lessons in right living you have been taught here. You know this age is characterized by a remarkable development of human power, activity, and freedom. And the increase of freedom tends to unsettle moral principles and to create a lack of stabilityg and independence of opinion and a bold and reckless spirit. Outward restraints have been removed to a large extent and consequently there is more need for inward restraints. Holy Angels was charged with the responsibility of teaching you the rules of living. Our prayer is that you will be true to them. May God bless you, Rev. A.j. Shaughnessy 5 -o1i' 1 ST.Al.PHClNSUS RECTCIRY T! His Excellency THE MOST REVEREND THOMAS A. CONNOLLY, D.D., j.C.D. I il l 'Q Ili at Work The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine is true C. 'HUC Action-the participation of the laity in the work of the hier- archy. It is an organized mobilization of the potential manpower of the Catholic laity under direct control and supervision by the hierarchy to fulfill the command of Christ to Go forth and teach all nations. The primary purpose of the C.C.D. is the personal sanctifica- tion of the members through work and sacrifice for Christ. The secondary purpose is the more effective instruction of the chil- dren and parents of each parish in their religion. This enlistment of the help of the laity in teaching Catholic doctrine is no reflection on either the ability or the devotion of our priests and religious or their holy vocations. It is a realistic fact that there are not enough priests and religious to do the job by themselves. What is needed is an aroused laity, the C.C.D., fully aware of their status as active members of the Mystical Body, and working with their priests to bring souls to Christ. 1 f y ' I 6 ',?X ,f' fave ,f 4g 51, Jcfazbc 3 LQ,r L,, fb J Ayub ,,4f4551ffJZZ, f 3 'Zu , Qigffmpff ami! fiic ff gig gg we +?,M4M. February 10, 11, and 12 were days in which our at- tention was focused on our spiritual life. Under the direction of our wonderful retreat master Reverend Raymond Lassell, C.Ss.R., we prayed to Our Mother of Perpetual Help for special assistance and guidance. The conferences pertained to prayer, the Mass, purity, and confession.
